Lucy in Parks and Recreation Episode 9"Ron and Diane" Episode Stills and Log

Here's a couple of episode stills from the Parks and Recreation Season 5 Episode 9 Ron and Diane. Promo images are courtesy of NBC and TV|Line. Photographer: Chris Haston. Unfortunately we don't have a clear shot of Lucy as Diane (except for the one photo where she's partially hidden (Photo #1) and the others it's either the back of her head or blurry.

Is it significant that both "Diane" and "Tammy Two" are both wearing red?

LOG LINE:

Save The Arctic Protest Court Case Delayed Till Feb 2013 - Taranaki Daily News & TV3 News

Image634891622671197205The Taranaki News 22 November 2012 has more information about Save The Arctic protest court case. The court case was postponed once again by Shell (they were due in court on 22 November).

What is "interesting" in this article (other than the new info about how the issue of the reparations Shell is seeking), is that Shell is being portrayed as the "victim" (technically they are the "wronged" party but the image of this huge multinational being a victim is just amazing.)

The other news is that another court case date may/will be delayed due to the holiday season. If NZ is the same as Australia in regards to the holidays then things are not likely to be resolved in December / January.

TV3 News is reporting that the court case will be in February. If that is the case then on 24 February it would be the first anniversary of the protest.

The article has some new information regarding what happens with the reparations being sought by Shell:

If a reparation agreement between defence and prosecution cannot be reached a reparation hearing will be scheduled. By law, it was for the prosecution to seek a reparation order on behalf of any victims. And it was for the defence to accept or not accept all or some of the reparation sought by the prosecution, Mr Greig said. It was then for the court to determine if reparation was appropriate and the amount

The Taranaki Daily News
Reparation arguments delay court
22 November 2012

Arguments over the large amount of reparation being called for from Greenpeace protesters are delaying their sentencing. Eight Greenpeace protesters, headed by Lucy Lawless, are being asked to pay $700,000 after pleading guilty earlier this year to illegally boarding the drillship Noble Discoverer in February.

The protest disrupted preparations for the ship's departure from Port Taranaki, New Plymouth to the Arctic.

The group was to be sentenced in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday but because of the holiday break this is now likely to be postponed until early next year.

Rob Jager, of Shell New Zealand, said yesterday police and the court were dealing with the matter. ''The Greenpeace occupation posed serious health and safety risks to the crew and the protesters themselves. All activities on the vessel were stopped for a period of time, causing delays to preparations for departure,'' Mr Jager said.

Police had asked Shell for information relating to the impact of the Greenpeace activists' unlawful activities.

''Shell is assisting the police and the court with their inquiry into the costs associated with the delay to the operator, Shell Todd Oil Services.''

To date the figure of more than $700,000 was the estimated cost to the Noble Discoverer contractor, Shell Todd Oil Services, of the delay caused by the Greenpeace occupation, Mr Jager said.

Senior Sergeant Malcolm Greig confirmed yesterday the sentencing was adjourned and a new date was yet to be scheduled.

In the meantime, police continued to work with the victims, Shell, to verify the reparation amount, he said.

Press Release: Power Shift
19/11/2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Youth Prepare for a Historic Shift in Power

Hundreds of young people across New Zealand and the Pacific are counting down the days until the biggest youth climate summit this region of the world has ever seen.
In just a few weeks, an event called Power Shift NZ-Pacific 2012 will see over 600 youth gather in Auckland to take action on climate change. It will be the first ever Power Shift to be held in New Zealand, but is based on a series of similar events that have been held all over the world over the past 5 years, mobilising more than 25,000 young people in a fight for their future.

During the three day summit, the participants will hear from inspirational speakers, learn new skills, and be a part of launching a massive campaign for next year.
The youth organisers are calling climate change “the defining issue of our time”, says spokesperson Brittany Packer.

“With the government’s recent abandonment of the Kyoto Protocol, and weakening of our Emission Trading Scheme, it’s becoming clear that climate consequences are not a priority. And with the cost of preventing and adapting to climate change increasing, and our neighbours in the Pacific islands already on the frontline of disasters, we don’t have the time to wait for them to sort it out.”
“It’s time to show New Zealand and the world that to our country’s youth, climate change is no longer a side issue, it’s not just an environmental issue, and it’s not a political game.”

Greenpeace Press Release: Sentencing adjourned for Lucy Lawless and Activists

lucyprotestHere's a press release from Greenpeace New Zealand regarding the Save the Arctic protest on board the Noble Discoverer on 24 February 2012

On 22 November, Lucy and her fellow Greenpeace protesters were due to face New Plymouth Court for sentencing on the charges of trespass of the Shell arctic drill ship The Noble Discoverer on 24-27 February 2012 (they pleaded guilty to the charges on 14 June 2012) . They were due to be sentenced on 13 September but the court case was adjourned to 22 November.

In the early hours of 24 February 2012 in Taranaki, New Zealand,  7 fearless Greenpeace activists boarded the Noble Discoverer and scaled the derrick of the drill ship. They stayed up on that derrick for 3.5 days and by staying there they brought attention to the world Shell's plans for drilling in the Arctic. No longer was it a story relegated to the inner pages of the newspaper or deeply buried online. It shone a light on Shell's plans to be the first in a race to use up the Arctic's oil. Lucy Lawless used her name and her celebrity to such devastating effect that the whole world paid attention. That is not to take away from the rest of the Greenpeace protesters but if it wasn't for Lucy being involved, their valiant effort would have been overlooked.

Sentencing adjourned for Lucy Lawless and activists

Auckland, 20 November 2012 - Thursday's sentencing of Lucy Lawless and seven other activists, arrested following the occupation of the Shell-chartered drillship the Noble Discoverer in New Plymouth in February, has been adjourned again.

This is the second time the sentencing of the eight activists has been postponed due to Shell not providing the required information, in time, for its reparation claim of around $700,000 from the activists. The original sentencing date was September 14. A new date has yet to be confirmed.

Seven of the activists climbed the drilling tower of the Noble Discoverer on February 24, while it was moored in Port Taranaki. All were arrested after a 77-hour occupation of the tower. An eighth activist was arrested on the first day of the operation.

Greenpeace New Zealand Executive Director Bunny McDiarmid says Shell's reparation claim is totally unjustified, given that the activists acted out of a moral duty.

"Along with the activists we drew the world's attention to Shell's plans for this hostile, yet fragile environment, in which an oil spill would be impossible to clean up.

"Since then it's been exposed that Shell's emergency response plan was hopelessly inadequate and failed when tested before the company gave up on drilling in the Arctic for this northern summer.

"The activists are not alone. Since they delayed the Noble Discoverer, back in February, more than two and a half million people have signed a petition calling on Shell to abandon its plans for the Arctic."

Save The Arctic Update: Noble Discoverer A History of Mishaps

The Noble Discoverer is once again in the news. This is the ship that Greenpeace New Zealand including Lucy boarded and occupied for 3.5 days back in February in their Save The Arctic Protest. There has been a lot of incidents involving this ship other than what it was intended for: drilling for oil in the Arctic. The Noble Discoverer, deemed unfit and dangerous by veteran seamen, is again in the news. This time it was for a fire (a small fire according to Shell. A small fire that caused a blast that could be felt 200 yards away? That's no small fire).

Image634888271822327289The latest is that it caught on fire. The Alaskan Dispatch reports:

A drill rig involved in Shell Oil's inaugural season of Arctic oil exploration briefly caught fire Friday morning in Dutch Harbor, an international port in Alaska's Aleutian Islands, according to the Unalaska Fire Department. Firefighters responded to calls of a fire at the U.S. Coast Guard docks at 10:22 a.m. Friday, where a plume of black smoke was seen coming off of a vessel, according to Unalaska Fire Chief Abner Hoage. As firefighters approached the docks they received reports that there had also been an explosion aboard the Noble Discoverer, Hoage said. The rig wasn't actually docked but was still hooked to tugs and its planks were not yet down. Hoage said responding firefighters spoke with the captain, who declined Unalaska fire department assistance since Shell's on-board personnel had the small flame under control. Curtis Smith, Shell's Alaska spokesman, said the small "flash fire" was put out immediately, adding no one was injured and the ship was never in danger. Smith described it as an engine backfire in the rig stack, a description Hoage compared to a car backfiring. Such fires are common aboard ships and happen when residual gases and fumes, left over in exhaust stacks, combust.

Image634888272818028782It would appear to be a small fire, right? Not so according to Peggy McLaughlin, Unalaska ports director, told KUCB Radio that she felt the blast in her office, about 200 yards away. That doesn't sound like a small fire to me.

Back in July, the Noble Discoverer was involved in another incident. This time the ship slipped its moorings in an Alaskan harbour, drifting close to the coast before it was towed back to deeper water.

Lucy was quoted as saying: "It was another sign of what a crappy tug that is," Lawless said. "The fact it has to be towed shows it's not fit for purpose."

Lucy said the incident was evidence of "the contempt Shell has for the safety of the environment". A sentiment that veteran seamen shared when they told Greenpeace the ship was dangerous. Lucy also said that: "A lot of old salts were coming up saying, 'it's a death trap'."

Lucy was due to be sentenced in New Plymouth Court on 22 November but the court case has once again been postponed by Shell.

Save The Arctic Court Case Update - Postponed Again

This is turning into quite a saga.

The press release issued by Greenpeace at the time said: The presiding judge had adjourned sentencing to November 22nd, on the basis that Police are seeking reparation. Greenpeace New Zealand understands that these are in excess of $700,000, and are being lodged on the behalf of Shell. Greenpeace NZ has insufficient detail to comment further, but it is likely that reparation will not be agreed to.

Here's Lucy's tweet about the latest adjournment

lucyprotestA little backstory to those coming in late on this story: In the early hours of 24 February 2012 in Taranaki, New Zealand,  7 fearless Greenpeace activists boarded the Noble Discoverer and scaled the derrick of the drill ship.

The Rainbow Warrior Is Headed to NZ in January!

Image634886628269645490Image634886630570258612Check out the fantastic news from Greenpeace New Zealand about The Rainbow Warrior. As you all know Lucy starred in the 1992 movie "The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior" which was about the French terrorist attack on the first Rainbow Warrior.

"Rainbow Warrior" was the name of a real-life Greenpeace vessel, which embarked upon a worldwide pro-ecological mission in the early 1980s. While docked in New Zealand in 1985, the Rainbow Warrior was destroyed by a bomb, and a crew member was killed by French agents. Lucy Lawless plays the role of Jane Redmund, a crew member of the Rainbow Warrior.

A bit of trivia: Jane Redmond was the fictional character but the role was based on Bunny McDiarmid, a crewmember of the Rainbow Warrior. Bunny is now still in Greenpeace but is the Executive Director of Greenpeace New Zealand.

FROM: GREENPEACE NEW ZEALAND

I have some very exciting news - the brand new Rainbow Warrior is on its way to Aotearoa!

It will be here in early January next year and I would like to invite you to come aboard for a free tour. And tell everyone you know to come too!

The Rainbow Warrior has a special place in the hearts of New Zealanders and has been the heart and soul of Greenpeace’s global campaigning for over 30 years. She’s been raided, battered, shot at and bombed but the spirit of the Warrior has never been stronger.

The new Rainbow Warrior is our first purpose-built ship. It was funded entirely by donations from Greenpeace supporters. She is at the very cutting edge of clean technology and one of the most environmentally friendly modern ships ever built. We’re very proud of her and very excited because this will be her first visit to New Zealand.
After being sunk by French Government agents in Auckland the first ship was laid to rest in Matauri Bay. I was a young deckhand at the time and for me it was a tragic day because the blast sunk the ship we called home and caused the death of a friend and crew member Fernando Pereira who was killed in the blast.

But it was also the beginning of something huge and together we showed the world that you can’t sink a Rainbow. New Zealand declared itself nuclear free and French testing in the Pacific was eventually stopped.

The second Rainbow Warrior soon picked up the baton and led from the front for over 21 years campaigning for peace and justice the world over before having to be retired.  Now the new Rainbow Warrior is leading our campaign for a cleaner, smarter, more innovative future at a time when the world needs a Warrior more than ever.  Her history here means the Warrior has a strong connection to New Zealand and this feels to us like it’s a homecoming and a visit to her spiritual home.

Please register here to be the first to hear about where and when the Warrior will visit a port near you
- and forward this email to your friends and family.

We want to share her with as many people as possible!

Thank you for your support,

Bunny McDiarmid
Executive director
Greenpeace New Zealand

NPR Interview with Lucy Lawless & Rob Tapert

Profile: TV series "Xena: Warrior Princess"
Host: SCOTT SIMON Time: 1:00-2:00 PM

SCOTT SIMON, host:

Xena, the warrior princess, is about to lay down her breastplate. By the end of the month, the last episodes of the six-year-old series, that's made in New Zealand and syndicated around the world, will be seen from Kansas City to Kotka, Finland. Lucy Lawless, the sculpturesque actress who is Xena, describes the show in a way that manages to convey its best quality without getting carried away.

Ms. LUCY LAWLESS (Actress): I always called it a goofy show for smart people.

(Soundbite of "Xena: Warrior Princess" theme)

SIMON: Xena began her run as a lethally sultry, raven-haired villain on the old "Hercules" series. One of the producers was American, Rob Tapert.

Mr. ROB TAPERT (Producer): They had been pushing me to come up with a spinoff show, and so I kind of went, `Well, we could spin off this character,' and they saw the footage and were very eager and it was kind of--they said, `Well, it's going to be a tough sell to do a woman warrior as its own show, but we're game if you are.'

SIMON: But first, the writers converted Xena from an evildoer to a muscular do-gooder, who delivers justice at the point of a sword. Sharon Delaney of Glendale, California, is head of the official Xena fan club.

Ms. SHARON DELANEY (Xena Fan Club): The actress Lucy Lawless plays her. She brings a softness to the strength.

SIMON: Lucy Lawless is a strapping presence, but has no background in stunts or stage fights. In fact, she trained as an opera singer.

Ms. LAWLESS: My nickname at school was Unco, for uncoordinated, and I was quite proud of that and quite comfortable with it. And then I got this job by accident when somebody else pulled out and was forced by the school of hard knocks to learn how to start to stunt fight. And nobody knows better than I that Xena's a composite character. There's about six people who go into being Xena, at least.

SIMON: The show has become noted among many women, who see Xena who' s a superhero whose powers are embellished by sheer feminine competence, but whatever the feminist and sensitive guy philosophizing, Xena succeeds by being the meanest mother on the block.

(Soundbite of "Xena: Warrior Princess")

Ms. LAWLESS: Ah! Yah!

Mr. TAPERT: We do have a formula, which is we certainly have three fight sequences in every single episode.

Ms. DELANEY: I didn't think I would like the fighting, because I' m not an action-adventure person by nature. But I did. And I suppose it's a guilty pleasure, but I found myself, you know, enjoying that aspect of the show as well, which surprised me.

SIMON: Xena often disarms her foes with a chakram, an old Persian weapon that looks like a fatal Frisbee, but it turns to Xena's hands like a boomerang. Maybe that's the New Zealand touch. Xena kicks up her show-stopping legs into the faces of assorted bad guys. There are worse ways to die. Fan Sharon Delaney says...

Ms. DELANEY: Rarely did you see blood, except when it seemed they were trying to make a point.

SIMON: And over the years, the action was increasingly punctuated by the personal story of Xena, the warrior princess, and her companion, Gabrielle the poet, played by Renee O'Connor.

Mr. TAPERT: We are in the business of making people feel something, which is your job on a television show, so I think over time, we' ve crafted the show or it's taken on more emotion between the two characters in order to hopefully make it a more satisfying viewing experience.

SIMON: The warrior showed the poet what a mess the world can be. The poet gave the warrior a reason to care enough to change it. Xena and Gabrielle traveled together, fought together, laughed together, and then some.

(Soundbite of "Xena: Warrior Princess")

Ms. LAWLESS (As Xena): Are you sitting on the soap?

Ms. RENEE O'CONNOR (As Gabrielle): I was wondering what that was. Hmm.

(Soundbite of water splashing)

SIMON: There were scenes of tenderness, as well as cleanliness. " Xena's" been called a love story. Does Lucy Lawless agree?

Ms. LAWLESS: The short answer is yes. This has always been about a tremendous friendship between two human beings and the whole experience was a labor of love for Renee and me and the crew. So anyway, yes. The simple answer is yes. Where are you going with this, Scott?

SIMON: We'll get to that. There's also been a twisted history aspect to "Xena." The stories are set in some imprecise all-inclusive antiquity. The likes of Julius Caesar, Hippocrates and Ares made guest appearances. Rob Tapert remembers...

Mr. TAPERT: We had some episodes a couple years ago where she questioned her way of the warrior, only to have Krishna tell her that that's the way of her life and there's no reason she should not excel and be everything she can be to be a warrior, since that's the path she should walk in life. So...

SIMON: When you say Krishna, you mean Lord Krishna?

Mr. TAPERT: That's right, Lord Krishna.

SIMON: Now what's he doing in Greek mythology?

Mr. TAPERT: Well, they happened to visit India, so we tried to touch on as many different religious, philosophical beliefs as we could, from going to China to Japan to India to the Norse gods.

SIMON: Xena's virtuosity in all areas encouraged those she encountered to fear gods but trust in Xena. Sharon Delaney.

Ms. DELANEY: Yeah. Xena invented the kite. She invented CPR, tracheotomies. She was the one under the table pulling back Ulysses' bow, you know. That's been a large part of the fun. The humor in the show, the humor of the writers, the producers, directors, actors, plays a large part in the fun of this show.

Ms. LAWLESS: People will ask me things about specific episodes or they'll mention the name of an episode and I'll go, `Oh, remind me what happened in that one.' And they'll say, `Oh, it was when you were kissing Kevin Smith or when you bit Kevin Smith's nipple,' and I'm going, `Tell me more,' you know. A little marker like that means nothing to me.

SIMON: A little thing like biting an actor's nipple you don't remember?

Ms. LAWLESS: Right. I can't remember that or I can't--which time was it when I gave birth to a centaur? Let me think...

SIMON: Well, now...

Ms. LAWLESS: Or crucified--I've been crucified that many times.

SIMON: The writers also borrowed another plot line from the New Testament. Lucy Lawless married Rob Tapert a couple of years ago. They got pregnant, in the parlance of our times. What do you do with a pregnant warrior princess?

Mr. TAPERT: There was no possible way that we thought we could conceal a pregnancy, so we embraced it in our storylines.

SIMON: Let me gently explore what I think you've been expecting, OK? And, look, this show is important to people all over the world. It's been important to many women all over the world. And I'm not going to shy away from saying it's been important to lesbians all over the world.

Ms. LAWLESS: I'm very proud of you.

SIMON: Well, we all know that.

Ms. LAWLESS: Hard hitting. OK.

SIMON: Do you see a special role for Xena in kind of the hopes and the enjoyment that some people have pinned on that character?

Ms. LAWLESS: Well, yes, I do. I do, because if you think about it, there's so little for the lesbian community to directly relate to on television, or has been in the past, that to see two women traveling along side by side, that doesn't involve talking about boys the whole time, so naturally, that would be very appealing. It seems that gay people think she's gay and straight people think she's straight.

SIMON: And, says Xena fan club president Sharon Delaney...

Ms. DELANEY: That's what art is all about. That's what music, a book--whatever you get from it when you read it, that's what's important, and that's what's valuable to you. So no one can possibly deny the love between those two characters. But where they might actually be in their sexual relationship, nobody really has a clue.

SIMON: "Xena" is closing down after six seasons because the producers and actors can launch the show into profitable syndication. The stars would like to take on a greater range of roles, including more face time as mothers.

Ms. LAWLESS: I'm relieved, because I'm out of energy. I'm not out of love with the show, but by golly, it's an incredible physical slog, and I've got two kids who need their mum, so yeah, it seemed right, and I feel very complete about it.

Ms. DELANEY: There's reruns. There's people just discovering the show now to whom the reruns are going to be original. But I will miss their next adventure.

SIMON: Lucy Lawless says she will miss the camaraderie around Xena and the care so many people have had for that character.

Ms. LAWLESS: But I don't even look like Xena. I'm much more slight than people expect. My hair's actually sort of a mousey brown. And I would hope that I can do a lot of different roles so that Lucy Lawless can go on and have a very diverse career. And "Xena" will just exist in time as a very special, slightly subversive, very fun show.

SIMON: Rob Tapert predicts that within a generation, there will be a `return of Xena' movie.

Mr. TAPERT: I bet they call my wife and ask her to do a small part as the mom or as a god or as something, so she would get a cameo, but I would think that in 20 years, I don't think she would want to put back on the leathers.

Ms. LAWLESS: There has to come a time when I'm allowed to say goodbye to that character. I feel a lot of pressure from a lot of the fans to play Xena forever, and I can't. You know, I just can't. Eventually, it's going to be ridiculous. I'm going to be 50 years old in a leather breastplate. It will just be tragic.

SIMON: Ms. Lawless has gotten to add some operatic touches to Xena. She sang her way through one entire musical episode, and then there' s Xena's war cry.

Ms. LAWLESS: I say `Ah, la, la, la, la' very fast and very high. But singers don't treat their bodies the way that I've treated mine over the last six years and aren't out in the rain and aren't yelling and shrieking and fighting, and I really feel that my voice went away for a few years. So now I'm hoping to get it back.

(Soundbite of "Xena: Warrior Princess")

Ms. LAWLESS (As Xena): Ahh! Ahh!

SIMON: Ms. Lawless, you've been awfully kind to speak to us, particularly so early in the morning, so I'm going...

Ms. LAWLESS: It is my very great pleasure.

SIMON: Well, I'm going to press ahead with just one request, OK?

Ms. LAWLESS: Oh.

SIMON: I understand you might not want to grant it because it is so early, but do you think we could hear Xena's yell? I mean, do you ever do it for your kids?

Ms. LAWLESS: I'll wake the children, Scott. Oh, man. I feel like a sideshow freak. Hang on.

SIMON: Now wait.

Ms. LAWLESS: Just for you.

SIMON: I don't want you to feel like a sideshow freak.

Ms. LAWLESS: Now you've made me mad. Now I'm going to have to do it. (Lawless does Xena's yell) All right?

SIMON: Oh, Ms. Lawless, I cannot thank you enough. I am...

Ms. LAWLESS: I thought you were going to ask me to sing you a song.

SIMON: Th...

Ms. LAWLESS: (Singing) `There were worse things I could do than go with a boy or two.' You remember that one?

SIMON: Yes, I do now. Yes. Well, what kind of music would you like to sing, like a musical role? I mean...

Ms. LAWLESS: You know, I always--I know it's on Broadway at the moment and I saw it. I loved "Annie Get Your Gun" since I was a child.

SIMON: Oh, (singing) `The girl that I marry will have to be...'

Ms. LAWLESS: That's right.

SIMON: (Singing) `...as soft and pink as a nursery.'

Ms. LAWLESS: (Singing) `The girl to whom I propose will wear satin and ribbons and smell of cologne'--or something. Anyway...

SIMON: Right, exactly.

Ms. LAWLESS: But...

SIMON: Oh, wait.

Ms. LAWLESS: Of course, I would play the other role.

SIMON: You know--wait, wait, wait. You know what song is from that, I think? Ready? (Singing) `Anything you can do, I can do better.'

Ms. LAWLESS: (Singing) `I can do anything better than you. No, you can't. Yes, I can.'

SIMON: Hey, that's my role.

Ms. LAWLESS: Yeah.

SIMON: Yes, I can.

Ms. LAWLESS: Oh, sorry.

SIMON: Well, and then the one, (singing), `I can sing anything sweeter than you can. I can sing anything sweeter than you. No, you can' t. Yes...'

Ms. LAWLESS: (Singing) `No, you can't.' Go on, Scott.

SIMON: No, no, no.

Ms. LAWLESS: Yes, I can.

SIMON: She sure can. Lucy Lawless, Xena. Her last show will air all around the world by the end of June. You can find more information on "Xena," the warrior princess, on our Web site at npr.org.

Press Release: Fight To Save The Arctic Continues Despite Corporate Bullying

The following is a press release from Greenpeace this morning about the ongoing Save The Arctic protest which was held on 24 February 2012 where eight Greenpeace protesters (including Lucy) scaled the Shell Drill Ship Noble Discoverer's derrick and stayed there for 3.5 days. Lucy is headed back to court next week to be sentenced on the trespass charges along with her fellow protesters (aka The Taranaki 8). You can read more about the protests and the ongoing battle to save the arctic on the AUSXIP Lucy Lawless Eco-Warrior Save The Arctic Info Page

savethearctic-day1-003Auckland, 13 November 2012 – Greenpeace says it will continue to challenge Shell’s plans to drill for oil in the Arctic ahead of a court case next week where Shell is demanding $700,000 in reparations from eight activists who delayed its drillship leaving Port Taranaki to head to the Arctic in February this year.

The eight activists are due to appear in the New Plymouth District Court next Thursday, November 22, for sentencing. Seven of the activists climbed the drilling tower of the Noble Discoverer on February 24, while it was moored in Port Taranaki. All were arrested after a 77-hour occupation of the tower. An eighth activist was arrested on the first day of the operation.

Greenpeace New Zealand Executive Director Bunny McDiarmid says Shell’s reparation claim is totally unjustified, given that the activists acted out of a moral duty.

“Along with our activists we drew the world’s attention to Shell’s plans for drilling in the fragile Arctic. Since then it’s been exposed that Shell’s emergency response plan was hopelessly inadequate and failed when tested before the company gave up on drilling in the Artic for this northern summer,” she says.

“Our eight activists are not alone. Since February this year more than two and a half million people have signed a petition calling on Shell to abandon its plans for the Arctic.

“The reparation figure the company is pursuing is a drop in the bucket by comparison to the nearly US$5 billion Shell has spent on its Arctic drilling programme so far. This indicates that Shell has resorted to corporate bullying in its desperation to be the first oil supermajor to start production in the Arctic.”

In September Shell lost its bid in an Amsterdam court to stop Greenpeace peacefully protesting against its drilling programme in the Arctic.
The President of the Amsterdam court, Han Jongeneel, said the protests Greenpeace Netherlands has already taken in the Netherlands at Shell’s headquarters and petrol stations were both proportionate and appropriate in light of Greenpeace’s earlier efforts to end Shell’s Arctic oil drilling through other means.

“A company like Shell, that is taking actions or plans to take actions that are controversial in society and which many people will object to, can and should expect that actions will be taken to try to change its mind. Such actions – in order to be effective – will have to be capable of disadvantaging Shell,” Jongeneel wrote.
