Shell Gives Up Arctic Drilling on Anniversary of Noble Discoverer Protest!

Image634976627945662951Well this is a great anniversary present for Greenpeace and the Taranaki 8 who on the 24-27 February brought attention to Shell's plans to drill in the Arctic. On the day (a day and a bit) of the first anniversary of the protest, 27 Feb (US), Shell has taken their drill ship and gone home for the rest of 2013!

There comes a time when you know you're digging a great big hole and someone needs to come along and say 'STOP DIGGING' for you to stop and just take stock of how far your project has gone belly up. It's admirable that you are still digging this hole for yourself but it's time to stop.

This is where Shell found itself at the end of 2012. It was not a good year PR wise; it was disastrous. So like all successful people and companies do, they take stock of what happened and see where they can fix something that's gone belly up. Sometimes admitting defeat and walking away is the only option. After the year Shell had, that was the ONLY option left to them.

Let's review A Year in the Life of Shell Oil and the #SaveTheArctic Campaign...

FEBRUARY 2013

SHELL Stops Drilling in the Arctic for 2013
Huzzah! Millions of dollars, lost hours in courtrooms and bad publicity has forced Shell's hand (plus some really horrible ships and the nice Arctic weather).

Lucy to Star in Auckland Theatre Company Production of Chicago

Here's some fantastic news just hot off the presses. The NZ Herald print edition (it's not online at the moment) has an article that says Lucy will be in the stage production of Chicago by the Auckland Theatre Company.

TICKETING INFO HERE

SYNOPSIS

1920's Chicago. Cook County jail is home to a merry band of murderesses who have all killed their husbands or lovers. There's nothing money can't buy in this place. Inmates Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly do a deal with smooth-talking, manipulative lawyer Billy Flynn to keep them from Death Row, while he promises to make them stars.

One of the most famous musicals of all time, Chicago is a story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery - all those things we hold near and dear to our heart. A dark parable of American justice, it is jurisprudence-as-showbusiness and trial-by-publicity.

With show-stopping numbers such as "All That Jazz", "Razzle Dazzle", "When You're Good to Momma" and "Class", Chicago is a sexy musical extravaganza and an unmissable tribute to the very heart and soul of theatre.
ATC's version of Chicago transforms the whole Q Theatre auditorium into the Cook County jailhouse.

"The longest-running American musical ever to play the West End, Chicago has garnered a stash of glitzy awards in many revivals worldwide. Michael Hurst's version of this razor-sharp, knockout show about bad girls behaving badly is guaranteed to have all the in-yer-face intimacy of his ATC tent-Cabaret in 2010." - Colin

Starship Christmas Album 2012 Raises $250,000 for Starship National Air Ambulance Service!

Image634970689079992390This is absolutely fantastic news for The Starship Foundation (and of course AUSXIP's chosen charity). Last December Starship released a CD of Christmas songs which included Lucy singing "Little Child". Today the news from Starship is that the CD has raised $250,000!

The funds donated by Universal Music will go to Starship's National Air Ambulance Service. Year-round the Starship National Air Ambulance Service flies top medical experts to life-threatening emergencies around the country. These vary from complications arising from normal childhood illnesses such as the flu to accidents (drowning, car crashes, sporting injuries); as well as children suffering from serious medical conditions. These specialists stabilise the children and allow them to be brought safely to Starship where they can receive the care they need. Starship Foundation raises $1.5 million annually to fund this service.

Can you still buy the CD? Absolutely! Just had a quick check that these links are still working and they are.

Taranaki Daily News Opinion Piece: I Love Lucy For Putting Children Before Oil Companies 18 Feb 2013

The Taranaki Daily News being the local paper for Taranaki and the epicentre of the Greenpeace occupation of the Noble Discoverer. Their coverage of the occupation and the court case/s has been slightly bent towards Shell (as you would expect since Shell is a huge employer - they employ 300 people in Taranaki and Wellington) . Last week they printed an opinion piece that was so incredibly vitriolic plus the locals blaming Lucy for the closure of their Ngamotu Beach; I wasn't sure who was more blind. The opinion writer or the locals who couldn't see what Shell were doing and whose only concern was access to Ngamotu beach.

Well this week they turned the other cheek and presented an opposing opinion. I especially love the cartoon of the treasure on Ngamotu Beach!

beachI Love Lucy For Putting Children Before Oil Companies

by Rachel Stewart
Taranaki Daily News
18 February 2013

Lucy Lawless. The name inspires a range of feelings depending on your point of view. Some people love her for simply playing Xena. Others loathe her for the Greenpeace connection.

On a drive through Oregon last year I pulled in at some seenbetter-days roadside motel.

The lady behind the counter had seen better days too and grumped and scowled her way through the check-in process. Suddenly a huge facial transformation occurred and her eyes started shining.

My New Zealand address had prompted a full-on Lucy Lawless rave, followed by a tour of all her ‘‘Warrior Princess’’ treasures. Even her car’s number plate was Xena-related.

It’s an example of what we Kiwis forget – how famous Lawless is throughout the rest of the world and particularly in the United States, where she enjoys virtual cult status. Greenpeace knows that a better environmental activist they could not find.

taranaki2Not that she is being explicitly ‘‘used’’ by Greenpeace. Far from it. Her personal passion to stop oil exploration in the Arctic is as real as her determination to see world leaders address climate change. She is a force for good and happily exploits her own fame to achieve it.

Soon after her Port Taranaki protest she appeared on TV One’s Sunday.

When asked about the possibility of a criminal conviction impacting on travel to the US for acting jobs she said, ‘‘I can’t let a tiny little thing like a career get in the way’’.

Some say that she is wealthy enough anyway and it wouldn’t matter. How many wealthy people have you noticed suddenly stop pursuing money and career just because they have accumulated enough already?

Back to our little corner of the world. Port Taranaki (owned by ratepayers via the Taranaki Regional Council) and Shell Todd Oil Services were recently handed a great opportunity. How to convince New Plymouth residents that it’s all those nasty little Greenpeace protesters’ fault that their precious Ngamotu Beach may be permanently closed to the public for security reasons?

Just tell it to a judge via a victim impact statement and then the parochial media will pick it up and Bob’s your uncle. That’s how you create a backlash. Easy.

Oil companies are particularly good at it. Anti-fracking campaigner Sarah Roberts was front page news in 2011 when TAG Oil claimed that her objection to the drilling of 18 new wells at Cheal cost oil rig workers 42 jobs. TAG never mentioned that it just didn’t have quite enough work for its guys around the Christmas period anyway or that it was a fairly normal event. Backlash against Roberts created. Win win.

Of course, they think the public are dumb, and often we definitely are, but on the closure of the port this one will probably backfire.

It doesn’t take long to look back over the Taranaki Daily News story archives on Stuff. There are several stories outlining Port Taranaki’s future plans, with a decades-old marina proposal high on its wish list.

Of course, any major oil discovery will mean further industrialisation of the port area and surrounds and, to be fair, on that score CEO Roy Weaver has not been coy. However, if you can set up an activist or two and create a mythology that it’s their fault, well, why wouldn’t you?

Reading some of the responses from the public in a recent story I was saddened.

To hear some say that children will be disadvantaged by Ngamotu’s closure, and to blame Lawless and her cohorts for it, I say they should use their heads. If that woman, or any parent for that matter, really cared about their children, they too would be protesting their hearts out on behalf of their kids’ future.

Clearly the short-term stress over the loss of one beach was far more upsetting to her than thinking about her children and grandchildren’s long-term survival.

The reality of climate change is such that we need to start to make a meaningful transition away from fossil fuels now.

You know it, I know it and yet the vast majority of us act like this gravy train is never going to derail. Yet rather than do anything ourselves we’ll vilify the likes of Lucy Lawless – and happily help bullies like oil companies and their apologists play their little games.

It was obvious throughout the Sunday interview that Lawless cares more about not only her children but, in many cases, yours too. When not out trying to save our planet for the nippers she is also a member of the board of trustees of the Starship Foundation, which is the charity arm of Starship Hospital. She has raised loads of money for the cause through many acts of fundraising and charity.

Why would we want to get a major hate-on for someone who values children so deeply?

What is wrong with our society when it enjoys tearing her down but builds up environmental rapists like oil companies?

It’s time to stop with the Xenaphobia. Say it with me. I love Lucy.

Remembering Kevin Smith 11 Years On

Image634965165746193077I can't believe it's been 11 years since Kevin passed away. On 15 February 2002, we lost one of the best. NZ on Screen has a tribute to Kevin by looking back on his career via videos.

In 2002, Lucy went on the Paul Holmes show (Sir Paul Holmes also passed away recently) and read out a eulogy / tribute to Kevin.

Image634965166525305118

Kevin Smith (Ares) passed away on 15 February 2002 and his good friend and costar on Xena, Lucy Lawless paid tribute to her friend on The Holmes Show in New Zealand on 18 February 2002.

Click here to watch video clip

The following is a transcript of what Lucy read out.

These are a few words that I put together with some others of Kevin’s Friends. It’s very hard to sum a man like him up. But anyway…

A staggering intellect…
A rapier wit…
A complete absence of malice.
Could get mad, but incapable of meanness.
Could never say no to a request.
Loved a party and was not afraid of a hangover.

[cut to bed room scene OAHAF]

Could talk to anyone: man, woman, child, black and white, US President or filmset extra.

You were his equal.

Unless ofcourse you were Sean Fitzpatsick, in which case he would faint the second you extended your hand.

[cut to beginning of OAHAF]

Yes, Kevin was passionate about sport, in particular the Canterbury Crusaders.

Big games down to the Shakespeare’s and the Cock&Bull Tavern.

Coffees on a Saturday morning with the guys after gym.

Kevin’s circle of friends extended well beyond the circle of Acting Community where he bested us all with god given talent and attitude… and boy, could he sing.

[cut to singing scene]

Kevin leaves behind not just us, his loving friends and fans, but Sue, his wife, the rock on which he build his career, and his partner of some twenty years and three loving little boys for whom Dad was truly a hero.

[cut to scene from a movie with Danielle Cormack]

We are going to do our darndest to make sure Kevin’s family feel the love and esteem we hold him in.

Kevin gave so full of himself personally and professionally… and I believe that all that great karma will be coming back their way.

Those little boys will know that where ever he is their Dad is still taking care of them still.

God Speed Kevin.

Party on.

We love you.

2.7 Million Have Signed the Arctic Scroll

The following is an email from Greenpeace about the Arctic Scroll at http://savethearctic.org

This is amazing. Our global pledge of people who want the Arctic to stay beautiful has surged to a staggering 2.7 million signatures! Thank you for being part of it.

Your  name will form part of the historic Arctic scroll. It’ll be taken by foot to the North Pole where it’ll lie alongside millions of others -- including Paul McCartney, Penelope Cruz, and Jude Law -- at the top of the world.

This is an incredible achievement, but it’s just the beginning
. We won’t stop taking action until the Arctic Ocean is declared a Global Sanctuary and the animals that call it home -- polar bears, Arctic seals, narwhals and more -- are no longer at risk. To do this, we need to ramp up our campaign from today. We will:

Cleaning Toilets Is Easier Than Cleaning Oil Off Sea Birds - NZ Herald 8 Feb 2013

Lucy is featured in this morning's NZ Herald - basically a catchup to the news yesterday that Lucy and her fellow protesters were sentenced to 120 hours of community service and a $650 fine. Why I'm featuring the NZ Herald article is because Lucy was on the front page, an Greenpeace photo of Lucy and Viv coming out of the court house and a very funny comic!

The comic is hysterical but also highlights what this is all about; no oil drilling, no oil spill, no contamination of the environment. A picture speaks a thousand words.

We Did It For The Future by Lucy Lawless

Film and TV star Lucy Lawless and seven activists were today convicted and sentenced to 120 hours community service each and for attempting to stop an Arctic-bound oil drilling ship last year.

Along with six Greenpeace volunteers, the New Zealand actress occupied the Shell-chartered Noble Discoverer in New Plymouth last February in a move that captured headlines around the world.

Image634958995792488971We Did It For The Future

by Lucy Lawless

It’s almost a year since we climbed the Shell-contracted drilling rig, Noble Discoverer. Landing on the pier that day we felt dwarfed by the vast 53 meter drill tower that sat atop this rusting hulk which Shell was to use to pioneer their drilling programme in the Arctic.

Insignificant as we were we felt something had to be done – a light had to be shone on Shell’s insane plans to drill for oil in the icy Arctic wilderness.

Not in my wildest dreams did I think we would succeed as we did remaining atop the drill tower for over 77 hours.

During daylight hours I explained dozens of times to outlets from CNN to the Taranaki Daily news why we were taking such a dramatic stand.

For my part I feel I owe it to my children to be counted among those demanding immediate action on climate change. If we don’t stand up to companies like Shell and call them to account for their reckless pursuit of oil into the farthest unspoiled reaches of the world, who will?

The arctic is like a vital organ of the earth – a regulator of the world’s temperature. As it melts we see ever more erratic weather – the marker of intensifying climate change.

By the fourth day when the police finally ascended the tower to arrest us, 130,000 added their voices to our call that Shell quit the arctic

It’s the thing I’m proudest of, that we spearheaded what would become an international call of over 2 million people who have joined the campaign to save the Arctic.

Following our action the world has watched an unfolding list of mishaps and failures in Shell’s Arctic programme (1). It has become an issue that can’t be ignored and the US government is now reviewing Shell’s plans for 2013.

To me, that terrible old tank – the 45 year old Nobel Discover – is a perfect example of Shell’s craven disregard for the Arctic.

I’ll say this for them, Shell’s certainly not risk averse –environmental or financially. Shell’s Arctic foray has cost them and their investors billions and was for the most part a failure.

The last thing they wanted was the spotlight we shone on them from that port town in New Zealand.

But you and your grandchildren don’t have to join me up a drill rig to have your say in turning the high Arctic into a sanctuary just click here.

(1) Shell drill program – the mishaps:

  • In July the Noble Discoverer slipped anchor in the sheltered waters of Dutch Harbor, Alaska;
  • In November the engine of the drill ship caught fire as it returned to Dutch Harbor, and had to be put out by specialist fire crews;
  • In December it was revealed that the oil spill containment system that Shell was supposed to have on-site in the Arctic was badly damaged in September testing. A Federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement representative said that the sub-sea capping stack was “crushed like a beer can”.
  • On 31 December, Shell’s sister Arctic drilling oil rig, the Kulluk, ran aground off the coast of Alaska whilst being towed back to harbour in Seattle. It had hit heavy weather in the Gulf of Alaska a few days earlier which caused the 400ft towing line to break and the rig to drift free;
  • In January 2013 Shell were cited by the US Environmental Protection Agency for violating its air pollution permits for both drill vessels;
  • Also in January, the US Government launched a review of Shell’s drilling plans in the Arctic.

Press Release: Star Lawless Slams Oil Giant Shell Outside Court

GREENPEACE PRESS RELEASE

"We are proud to have taken part in our attempt to stop Shell's reckless plans to drill for oil in the pristine Arctic." - Lucy Lawless

New Plymouth, 7 February 2013 - Film and TV star Lucy Lawless and seven activists were today convicted and sentenced to 120 hours community service each and for attempting to stop an Arctic-bound oil drilling ship last year.

Along with six Greenpeace volunteers, the New Zealand actress occupied the Shell-chartered Noble Discoverer in New Plymouth last February in a move that captured headlines around the world.

Speaking outside Taranaki District Court, Lawless said:

"We are proud to have taken part in our attempt to stop Shell's reckless plans to drill for oil in the pristine Arctic.

"Since we occupied the Noble Discoverer, it has become evident to everyone watching, from the millions who have signed Greenpeace petitions, to the US Government, now examining Shell's plans, that it can never be safe to drill in the Arctic.

"Shell's Arctic programme has cost them billions and it's now regarded as an eye-wateringly expensive failure.

"Let's embrace clean energy; we're going to have to anyway, so why not do it before they cause a major oil spill in the Arctic, and consign our grandchildren to an uncertain and dangerous world?"

Lawless and six others climbed the drilling tower of the Noble Discoverer on February 24, 2012 while it was moored in Port Taranaki. All were arrested after a 77-hour occupation of the tower. An eighth person was arrested on the first day of the operation. The ship had been working off the Taranaki coast and was preparing for the first stage of its trip to the Arctic.

Besides Lawless, the others sentenced today were Raoni Hammer from Lyttleton, Mike Buchanan from Diamond Harbour, Shayne Comino from Lyttleton, Viv Hadlow from Auckland, Shai Naides from Spain, Zach Penman from Hamilton and Ilai Amir from Auckland.

Additional they were ordered to pay a total of $5210 in reparation to the Port of Taranaki. The court declined to entertain Shells claims for damages totalling about $650,000 which lawyer for the group, Ron Mansfield, said was "excessive and unjustified."

  • In July the Noble Discoverer slipped anchor in the sheltered waters of Dutch Harbor, Alaska;
  • In November the engine of the drill ship caught fire as it returned to Dutch Harbor, and had to be put out by specialist fire crews;
  • In December it was revealed that the oil spill containment system that Shell was supposed to have on-site in the Arctic was badly damaged in September testing. A Federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement representative said that the sub-sea capping stack was "crushed like a beer can".
  • On 31 December, Shell's sister Arctic drilling oil rig, the Kulluk, ran aground off the coast of Alaska whilst being towed back to harbour in Seattle. It had hit heavy weather in the Gulf of Alaska a few days earlier which caused the 400ft towing line to break and the rig to drift free;
  • In January 2013 Shell were cited by the US Environmental Protection Agency for violating its air pollution permits for both drill vessels;
  • Also in January, the US Government launched a review of Shell's drilling plans in the Arctic.

BREAKING NEWS: The Verdict Is In! Community Service & Fined $651.44!

lucycourt1.jpg

BREAKING NEWS: Lucy and the Taranaki 7 in New Plymouth Court. The following will be updated as more news becomes available. ALL Updates are going on twitter at AUSXIP Lucy Lawless Twitter Account - @LUCYLAWLESSNET

THE NEW GOODS: Lucy and Taranaki 7 Found Guilty of Trespass, the $700,000 reparations that Shell wanted, thrown out, Community Service & a fine of $651.44 (what an odd number):

Court decision: and other Greenpeace activists ordered to pay $651 in reparation and serve 120 hours of community service

8272971.jpg

Actor-turned-activist Lucy Lawless and seven others have each been sentenced to 120 hours of community service after occupying Shell Todd Oil's exploration ship last year.

All eight Greenpeace anti-oil lobbyists avoided a $648,000 fine, instead being ordered to pay $650 each to cover port costs at New Plymouth District Court today.

In February last year, they occupied the 53 metre-high mast of the vessel Noble Discoverer for 77 hours to protest oil exploration in the Arctic being carried out by Shell, which owns 50 percent of Shell Todd Oil Services.

Police were seeking $648,000 in reparation costs, which was supported by Shell Todd Oil but Judge Allan Roberts turned it down.
Click here to find out more!

Judge Roberts says the defence has tried to downplay the crime as a "trifling" offence.

The eight protestors are: Ms Lawless, Raoni Hammer, Mike Buchanan, Shayne Comino, Viv Hadlow, Shai Naides, Zach Penman and Ilai Amir.

The protesters were initially charged with burglary, but pleaded guilty when the lesser charge of unlawfully being on the ship was laid.

Lawless is best-known for her role as Xena: Warrior Princess. She told reporters that the protest prompted thousands of people to support the campaign to stop the drilling.

What Happens In the Dark Comes to Light For Shell
Editorial by MaryD

Well it's finally here (and barring any last minute adjournment), the Taranaki 8 will be sentenced today. What happens in the dark comes to light for Shell - Lucy and her Taranaki 7 fellow protestors brought into the light Shell's very quiet journey to the Arctic to drill for oil. This indeed would have been relegated to the inner pages of a newspaper and soon forgotten. Let's not talk about the rape of the environment up in the arctic. We have it covered, it's perfectly safe and if we make a few polar bears lose their home when we accidently have an oil spill, it's okay. No will really notice or care.

How wrong they were. Greenpeace was there. They noticed and devised a plan to send it protestors to make some noise. Boy, did they make some noise! Leading this valiant group of seven was one Lucy Lawless. Lucy, the mother and not the actress, decided to take a stand. She decided enough was enough and standing on the sidelines wasn't going to achieve anything. Actions speak louder than words for this mother. There was Lucy, successful actor rolling up her sleeves and getting her hands dirty by scaling an almighty high derrick (hands up those who knew what a derrick was without a google search before Lucy scaled it? Not me. I thought a Derrick was a man's name!).

Not only did she scale the derrick but sat on top of it with the other 6 protestors for 3.5 days! Their names are:

- Mike Buchanan from Christchurch.
- Shayne Comino from Christchurch.
- Raoni Hammer from Christchurch.
- Shai Nades from Wellington.
- Vivienne Hadlow from Auckland.
- Ilai Amir from Auckland

Why did Lucy do it? Why don't we leave it up to Lucy to explain in her own words. The following was published in the New Zealand Woman's Weekly on 17 December 2012:

A Letter To My Grandchildren by Lucy Lawless

My darlings,

Having spent four days occupying an oil rig bound for the Arctic circle – and cooling my heels in a jail cell – I’ve had a bit of time to think about why I took it upon myself to be part of the Greenpeace mission. It comes down to only one thing: I love you more than my life and I will fight like a tiger mother for your wellbeing.

I desire that you grow up in a world where polar bears and the magical narwhal still exist, where forests thrive, the air is pure, food nutritious and clean water is available to every form of life. What we now know is that our current practice of burning fossil fuels will guarantee you none of these things.

It is unthinkable that we who claim to love our children would knowingly choose to furnish them with a degraded and volatile environment in which to grow. Our unwillingness to move away from fossil fuels is sowing the seeds of a terrible harvest. We will have been neglectful of our duty to you.

Please know that in 2012 your grandmother and others risked life, liberty and reputation to engage in a peaceful and relentless battle to protect you even before you were born. There are many like us. We see oil drilling in the Arctic as an unspeakable violence against its native peoples and species and against you, my darlings.

One day it will be an accepted fact that crimes against the environment are crimes against humanity, but for now we must hold ourselves, our corporations and our governments accountable so you won’t have to. There can be no partial victory here. Failure is not an option.

With greatest love,

Your tiger grandmother,
Lucy

I am so proud of Lucy. So proud of her for standing up for what she believes. There is no denying the fact that we have to act now to protect our environment. Standing on the sidelines and hoping that someone will speak up doesn't work all that well. I'm reminded of a poem which I have sticky taped in my office. It was written by pastor Martin Niemöller on the Nazi Rise to Power.

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the socialists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Catholic.
Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

We need to act now. Lucy and her fellow protestors acted. What are we going to do? Many of us can't scale derricks but we can speak out and let our voices be heard. We can take action in various ways and means.

To Lucy and Mike, Shayne, Raoni, Shai, Nades, Viv and Ilai - there may have been only 8 that went up that derrick but 2,564,589 came down and more are joining the fight!

Battle on!

MaryD

Lucy has a busy few days ahead other than the court case. She will also attend the BigGayOut Event in Auckland on the weekend. Italian Lucy Video: How She was, How She is Now: Xena Still Beautiful 17 Years After

A Lucy video in Italian; Barbara Bruno passed this on (and translated) what the announcer was saying. It's a Yahoo video showing Lucy at the premiere of Spartacus. The title means: How she was, how she is now: Xena still beautiful 17 years after.

It says that Lucy 17 years ago was on Xena, that she had to dye her hair black for the role and she had to go through an intense training to be believable as Xena(fighting scenes and physique).

It says that after that role she did not get many important roles, as she was very stereotyped for her Xena character, but since Spartacus Lucy found fame and notoriety again and she is still more beautiful than ever. It talks briefly about Lucretia, saying how charming, witty and scheming the character is.

Lucy Tweets: Save The Arctic Protest Court Case Set For 7 February

Image634953845637999734Lucy tweeted this morning that the Save The Arctic Court Case will now be heard on 7 February in New Plymouth Court.  Lucy and her fellow Greenpeace protesters are due to face New Plymouth Court for sentencing on several occasions but it was postponed.

The charges related to trespass of the Shell arctic drill ship The Noble Discoverer on 24-27 February 2012 where they occupied the ship's derrick for 3.5 days preventing it from sailing to the Arctic for drilling of oil in the pristine Arctic waters. Lucy and her fellow protestors pleaded guilty to the charge of trespass (after it was downgraded from burlgary) on 14 June 2012. They were due to be sentenced on 13 September but the court case was adjourned to 22 November. The court case was postponed once again by Shell. Their reason? Shell was seeking damages of $700,000. Click here to read Greenpeace Press Release on why Shell wanted damages back in November.

We now wait to see if the 7 February court case will go ahead or once again be postponed.

Here is her tweet

In the early hours of 24 February 2012 in Taranaki, New Zealand,  7 fearless Greenpeace activists boarded the Noble Discoverer and scaled the derrick of the drill ship. They stayed up on that derrick for 3.5 days and by staying there they brought attention to the world Shell's plans for drilling in the Arctic. No longer was it a story relegated to the inner pages of the newspaper or deeply buried online. It shone a light on Shell's plans to be the first in a race to use up the Arctic's oil.

Alaskan Politican Introduces "Lucy Lawless Bill"!

Image634888272818028782
This is just UNBELIEVABLE Below is the article from Anchorage Daily News that has me totally gobsmacked.

An Alaska lawmaker has introduced legislation that would make it a felony to interfere with permitted oil and gas, timber or other development projects. He called it the "Lucy Lawless Bill"

Before we get to the article here is what happened (for those coming late to the party) on 24 February 2012 and for the next 3.5 days, Lucy and her fellow protesters brought the world's attention to Shell's plans for the Arctic:

In the early hours of 24 February 2012 in Taranaki, New Zealand,  7 fearless Greenpeace activists boarded the Noble Discoverer and scaled the derrick of the drill ship. They stayed up on that derrick for 3.5 days and by staying there they brought attention to the world Shell's plans for drilling in the Arctic. No longer was it a story relegated to the inner pages of the newspaper or deeply buried online. It shone a light on Shell's plans to be the first in a race to use up the Arctic's oil. Lucy Lawless used her name and her celebrity to such devastating effect that the whole world paid attention. That is not to take away from the rest of the Greenpeace protesters but if it wasn't for Lucy being involved, their valiant effort would have been overlooked.

No Alaskan "Lucy Lawless Bill" can stop the #savethearctic campaign; find out more on how you can be involved by going to savethearctic.org

Let Lucy herself tell you about why she was up the Shell Drill Ship derrick of the Noble Discoverer

and now to the article

Rep. Eric Feige is calling HB92 the "Lucy Lawless bill," after the actress who last year boarded a Shell drill ship before it left New Zealand for the U.S. West Coast. She and other Greenpeace activists were arrested. Lawless, from New Zealand, is best known for her TV series, "Xena: Warrior Princess."

Feige, a co-chair of the House Resources Committee, said in an interview Thursday that Alaska has a good permitting process, through which the public can raise any concerns or complaints. He said in the last few years, there has seemed to be an increasing tendency from within the activist environmental movement to not just write letters to the editor, attend meetings or otherwise engage in the process. "They seem to want to take the law into their own hands," he said.

"What kind of a society are we devolving into when people think they can just do this stuff indiscriminately without any real penalty?" he asked.

Feige, R-Chickaloon, said the bill, introduced Wednesday is an effort "to get out ahead of some of the big projects that we hope to have down the road. These are projects that will contribute great things to the Alaska economy, and these are projects that, like any project, are vulnerable to criminal mischief."

There are a number of controversial projects in Alaska, involving mining, coal and offshore drilling. Shell, for example, has begun exploratory drilling in the Arctic waters off the Alaska coast. The proposed Pebble Mine, a massive copper and gold prospect near the headwaters of one of the world's premier salmon fisheries, has been the subject of a heated PR battle for years - and the group behind the project hasn't even moved into permitting yet.

The bill would make taking actions with the intent to interrupt or interfere with an industrial operation, authorized by a state permit, criminal mischief in the third degree. An industrial operation, as defined, would include a "construction, energy, or timber activity and oil, gas, or mineral exploration, development or production."

Phil Radford, executive director of Greenpeace, said in a statement that Greenpeace activists "are always proud to have their names associated with the work we do to save the planet from destruction. However, this misguided attempt to protect big industry from scrutiny is a misuse of taxpayer money.

"If the legislator was serious about protecting the state's future, he would listen to the coalition of First Nations groups and Alaskan citizens who oppose the catastrophic work of companies like Shell who clearly have no business in the Arctic," he said.

An email sent Thursday by The Associated Press to agency representing Lawless wasn't immediately answered.
