"Salem" Returns for Season Two on Sunday, April 5 at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT

Recurring Guest Stars Lucy Lawless and Stuart Townsend Join Returning Cast

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- WGN America has set the premiere date for the highly anticipated second season of its hit supernatural thriller "Salem," which will make its return on Sunday, April 5 at 10:00 p.m. ET/ 9:00 p.m. CT.  The network also released the first-look photo from the new season of "Salem," currently in production in Shreveport, LA for its 13-episode sophomore run, featuring recurring guest stars Lucy Lawless ("Xena: Warrior Princess," "Spartacus") and Stuart Townsend ("Betrayal," "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman").

From creators and writers Brannon Braga ("Cosmos," "24") and Adam Simon ("The Haunting in Connecticut"), "Salem" season two opens at the dawn of the witch war set into motion at the end of season one, with its catalyst and Salem's deadliest witch, Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery, "Made in Jersey," "Human Target") at the center of the mayhem as she faces off against new and old adversaries vying for her throne.  In the wake of the destruction caused by the Grand Rite, completed by Mary and inadvertently triggered by Isaac Walton (Iddo Goldberg, "Mob City") in the season one finale, the fates of Captain John Alden (Shane West, "Nikita," "ER"), Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel, "Arrow," "Fringe"), Tituba (Ashley Madekwe, "Revenge"), Anne Hale (Tamzin Merchant, "Jane Eyre"), Mercy Lewis (Elise Eberle, "The Astronaut Farmer") and Isaac hang in the balance.

New to the embattled 17th-century village for the second season of "Salem" are Lucy Lawless as Countess Marburg, one of the last descendants of a legendary line of ancient German witches; Stuart Townsend as Samuel Wainwright, a mysterious doctor looking to uncover the secrets of Salem as he keeps a few of his own; Joe Doyle ("Raw") as Baron Sebastian Marburg, the charming and cultured son of the Countess; and Oliver Bell ("The Saint") as Mary's long-lost son, who was revealed in the season one finale to have been secretly kept alive all along by her coven.

"Salem," called "perversely entertaining" by The New York Times and "a sexy good time" by The Hollywood Reporter, is a bold re-imagination of the infamous 17th century witch trials in colonial Massachusetts.

"Salem" is executive produced by Brannon Braga, Adam Simon, Kelly Souders, Brian Peterson and Prospect Park's Josh Barry and Jeff Kwatinez.  Nick Copus directs and serves as co-executive producer.  The series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios.

High Water Comic Anthology with Intro By Lucy Lawless + Images

Here’s a superb way to support kiwi artists as they explore the threat of climate change. Damon Keen from 3 Bad Monkeys was kind enough to send me information regarding this issue plus some images of the comic. As Damon says below, the comic will be available in late Feb/early March. You can order if you are overseas (see below for details). Lucy wrote the introduction to the anthology.

High Water is a 96 page hardcover comic anthology featuring some of New Zealand's best comic artists, including Dylan Horrocks (Hicksville, Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen), Sarah Laing (A Fall of Light), Chris Slane (Nice Day For A War) and many others.

The stories all explore the threat of climate change, and range from the distant past to the far future, and from thoughtful to hilarious! Given Lucy's high profile as both a popular actor and passionate environmentalist, we were stoked that she was able to write an introduction for us. She's the perfect voice for this book!

High Water is being published by 3 Bad Monkeys, the publisher of Faction - NZ's premier comic anthology. It will be available in New Zealand comic shops from late February, early March. International buyers will be able to pick up a copy from

Beware The Vampires Deep In The Gorge 7 January 2015

Dad had us eating out of the palm of his hand on the long holiday road trip up north to Grandma's.

By Lucy Lawless

I am sitting between my Dad and big brother on the wide leather bench seat of our big car. Mum is in the back holding the baby.

My Irish twin, Davey, complains that he wants to sit in the front. He is 11 months older than me but I am proud that everyone thinks he looks younger than me. Plus, he can't say "fish". He pronounces it "thish", which I also lord over him.

I bags my turn to pay the tolls at the Auckland Harbour Bridge. To me it is a lovely old brontosaurus and it is thrilling to come flying over its back and down the tail. My ears pop a bit. Terrifyingly, the oncoming cars are corralled by nothing more than a streak of white paint but I know my Dad will hold the mighty Falcon steady.

We are waylaid by an extra-long queue for the toll booths. It is an irritation for grown-ups but Davey and I still fight over who gets to throw the florin to the man. I win because I am a brat and soon we are on our way.

Finally we reach the Brynderwyns on our six-hour journey to see Grandma for the Christmas holidays. The Brynderwyn Hills are pretty unremarkable. I'm just a kid but frankly they hardly seem worthy of being given a name. No offence.

Anyway, the Brynderwyns are where I have to give up the prized spot in front. When the coast is clear, Dad gives us the okay to switch places en route. He slows to 60km/h to make the transition safer, though somehow Davey still manages to give me a kick in the armpit on the way through. Now he has to put on the seatbelt because he's in the front but no one bothers in the back, despite Mum's protestations. We are bulletproof. All the same, we slow to gawk at the spot where a busload of 15 souls plummeted to their deaths 10 years earlier.

In the back of the car I slump low and let the thrum of the engine own me. The power poles whiz by and the wires do barrel-rolls in mesmeric patterns. They roll one way, reverse, reverse then vanish altogether. I hold my breath willing them to resume. It's a battle of wills.

By and by they do and I doze off. The car slows. I instinctively sense we have arrived. I lurch up from deepest child slumber, with seat buckle imprinted on my sweaty cheek, and find myself eye to eye with a Hereford bobby calf. Dad's car swims like a salmon through a stream of bovine anguish. They seem to know they're headed for the abattoir at Moerewa.

As we get closer to the Mangamuka Gorge, Dad grows confident enough to make the ultimate offer, to tell a vampire story. The climax of any scary story has to occur in the gorge. It's dark and twisty and Dad makes helpless pleas to the sky that our car not break down for who knows what could happen in this inhospitable land?

If he makes the offer too early, his voice may not last the distance. We are overjoyed to have the bejeezus scared out of us. There is always a priest, a good guy and a couple of ne'er-do-wells. Only one will live to tell the tale, which is exactly what Dracula wants. He knows that after a feast he can hibernate in his cellar till the next brood of treasure hunters comes a knockin'.

We learned some rules about life on a Dracula hunt.

The Secret Art of Bees–Sunday Star Times 04 January 2015

sunday

The New Zelaand Sunday Star Times has an article about the preservation of bees and what kiwis are doing to highlight the problem of a dwindling bee population:

Lucy is mentioned with a great photo of her in bee-hive friendly garden:

So there's actor Lucy Lawless in her bee-friendly garden that has housed hives for four years; flower-painting artist Pamela Wolfe who says "more bees means more fertility in the garden and more subject matter for me, so I'm really happy"; and school students competing with each other to identify the most bee food.

"There's an amazing line being drawn," says Smuts-Kennedy. "Between the bees and us - these invisible connections."
