GeekTalk Interviews Lucy and Bruce at SDCC

GeekTalk interviewed Lucy and Bruce – her enthusiasm for the show she loves in coming back is quite infectious. She sure is happy that Ash Vs Evil Dead is going to start.

I was able to briefly interview Bruce Campbell AND Lucy Lawless who are both charming AND funny! Ash vs Evil Dead is currently in production in New Zealand it’s the series from the classic horror film franchise The Evil Dead and will premier on STARZ Fall 2015. The first season will be a half hour 10-episodes series. It will star Bruce Campbell reprising his role as Ash and introduces Lucy Lawless (Ruby) as his arch nemesis. The executive producers are Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell who are the original filmmakers of the franchise and Craig DiGregorio will be the executive producer and showrunner of the new series on STARZ.The series is taking place 30 years after the final film where Ash is well being Ash. He’s still working a dead end job keeping his head down as a stockboy (man), is still trying to mack the ladies and is a chainsaw-handed monster hunter who’s avoided responsibility for the last 30 years for the Evil Dead terrors that he and his friends released upon the world. Now that a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of humanity Ash will have to face his demons personally and literally as they walk the earth. Destiny won’t release her icy grip from Ash as he’s forced to face his demons and be a hero rather he wants to or not!

Upcoming Lucy Feature on Nola.com Hurricane Katrina Anniversary Coverage

I received an email from the managing producer of Nola.com which will be of interest to Lucy fans. They will feature Lucy as part of their 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. They will let me know when their coverage of Lucy will appear.

This is a general heads up of an upcoming feature on Nola.com about their 10th Anniversary Hurricane Katrina coverage. 10 years ago Katrina hit and New Orleans suffered greatly. 1,833 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods. Katrina caused severe destruction along the Gulf coast from central Florida to Texas. The most significant damage (in number of deaths) was in New Orleans. Who can forget those images of devastation.

Lucy was caught up in the storm whilst she was filming Vampire Bats in New Orleans and stayed until the very last moment when she and her cast mates made a dash for safety.

The fans came out in force to help as Lucy also lent her name and appeared at charity events to raise funds for those affected. We initiated a huge campaign from all over the world to help Lily Duke. Read Sharon’s message about the effort here

The A Friend In Need Cards and Toys Campaign was initiated by fans from the Official Lucy Lawless Fan Club after a news article on an angel called Lily Duke. As MSNBC reported: Within days after Hurricane Katrina hit, Duke managed to do what other relief agencies couldn’t: get food and water to her neighbors. Since then she’s expanded her network, distributing medicine, packaged lunches and bags of ice to as many as 20,000 people a day. Lily can't do this on her own - she needs help and the fans have decided to lend a hand.

Nine Reasons With We Need a Xena Reboot - Sydney Morning Herald

Michael Idato (very obvious a Xenite), entertainment guru over at the Sydney Morning Herald has nine reasons why we need a Xena reboot - what do you mean Michael we only have 9 reasons? I think we can come up with a few more but here's Michael's 9 reasons - click here to read full article

1. Because we're at the dawn of the age of the female superhero

AUSXIP: Yes indeed and Xena was ahead of her time! This opening theme just gets to me...seriously. I've been in this fandom for 19 years and it still gets to me.

2. Because few instruments are cooler than Bulgarian bagpipes

3. Because no one can ululate like Xena can ululate

Image

4. Because no one can accessorise like Xena can accessorise

5. Because an episode of Xena is basically a history lesson

If you are reading Michael's #5 reason - it won't make any sense to non Ausssies :)

6. Because Xena and Gabrielle were basically a same-sex couple

Well this a very 'well duh' moment :) Yes indeed.

And long before it was fashionable to boot. Xena's real-life alter-ego, Lucy Lawless, said as much in an interview conducted after the series wrapped. Think about it. Two women who travelled everywhere together, took baths together, shared the same bed and, when the occasion required, worked their uvula's into a frenzy. It's enough to give you a case of the vapours. Long before on-screen couples like Captain Jack and Ianto Jones (from Torchwood) could declare their love explicitly, Xena and Gabrielle just bathed wordlessly together. A lot.

Image

Yeah baby they were a couple - well and truly.

7. Because Gabrielle was the best sidekick, ever

Indeed she was and how! She matured, she grew out of being a sidekick and became Xena's equal. It was a rocky road but she got there. Awesome!

8. Because Lucy Lawless is a really, really nice

Okay, so, there was that time at the Mardi Gras, right? You remember. Well, probably you don't, because you weren't there. But there was that time at the Mardi Gras, the year that Lucy Lawless (Xena) and Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle) came, that we (myself, and a colleague) were tasked, unexpectedly, with chaperoning them. You read that right: two little Aussie blokes, the only thing between Xena and Gabrielle and tens of thousands of lesbians. It's a small miracle we weren't killed. But the takeout is this: I've met a lot of celebrities in my time, and Lawless was a big, bronze-bustier of lovely.

The Great Xena Reboot Will They Or Won’t They RoundUp: Get Set Xena 2.0 or Maybe Not

Image635731039020265539Well it’s been a rollercoaster day. I woke to the news that I’ve been waiting to hear for the last 14 years (ever since the end of A Friend In Need in May 2001) and then almost as fast it was shot down by Lucy but then EW kicked in and and and and…the Xenaverse went into meltdown, Xena was trending on Facebook and Twitter.

One almost thinks that this was a kite flying exercise to see if it would generate some interest. It generated interest all right. The wall to wall articles I’ve seen stream through are amazing – even Aussie newspapers were salivating at the prospect of a Xena Reboot (and they are hard to please).

Where are we? In the dark and speculating like the previous months and days….

Alright, let’s go through the facts and run down the various ‘yes they are’ and ‘no they’re not’ on the Xena Reboot Xena 2.0!
Buckle up, it gets very confusing.

NBC was planning on a Xena Reboot. The news hit the Xenaverse like a freight train and EVERYONE got excited only to have Lucy come out and say it was just a rumour. Well that deflated everyone’s balloons UNTIL Entertainment Weekly came out and said they confirmed with NBC that it is in fact being considered.

Say what?

Alright, let’s go with the facts as they are presented. Let’s start with The Hollywood Reporter (not your average entertainment blog since it’s a widely respected journal) and one of the reasons I believed the story.

  • Producers NBC and NBC Universal International are currently searching for a writer to board the reboot, which hails from original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi.
  • Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that NBC and NBC Universal International are prepping a reboot of the beloved Lucy Lawless action-adventure drama. The drama is in the extremely early development stages and a search for a writer is currently underway.

So far so good – that’s pretty much the same same for the last 14 years with news about writers etc etc etc

  • Original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi are also involved in the project, which is considered to be a "modern reboot."

Not according to Lucy it’s not. Rob is not involved.

  • It's unclear what, if any, role original star Lawless would have, though sources tell THR that insiders would like the original star to have both a role on screen and behind the scenes.

Someone must have forgot to tell Lucy about this development because as she indicated she knows nothing about it. I want Lucy back as Xena and Renee back as Gabrielle. Everything else…doesn’t matter to me.

Image635731036938850447

  • The drama is eyed for 2016.

Don’t we wish!

  • It's too early to know if Xena 2.0 would be a limited 13-episode run similar to Fox's revived 24 or a more standard full-season order. Insiders say the hope is for the new Xena to be an ongoing (read renewable) series.

At this point…I don’t care. Just do the damn thing.

  • Sources say the new Xena would have to have the charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of The Hunger Games' Katniss as producers are said to be looking for a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation.

Er what? Katniss? I have never watched The Hunger Games but taking a quick poll amongst the Xenaverse…I was greeted with a lot of disbelief and a whole lot of laughter. I’m assuming that Katniss is not match for Xena in the smarts department. Come on, this is the Warrior Princess, the Conqueror, the thorn in the side of Caesar and the Olympian Gods…you gotta have smarts.

May I suggest to the person who wrote the Hollywood Reporter article…go and do some homework on Xena. The smarts of Katniss…give me a break. Read the full Hollywood Reporter article here

and now we come to Entertainment Weekly which gives this tidbit about why Lucy wouldn’t know about the NBC news:

Here is the kicker

Xena: Warrior Princess could return to television next year. EW has confirmed that NBC hopes to reboot the cult series, which starred Lucy Lawless as the title warrior.

EW goes to the source of the news and says…yep NBC hopes to reboot the series. I sure hope they don’t try and reboot it like they did for The Bionic Woman which was a god-awful show. Let’s not go into that because I’ll be ranting about it. You don’t want to read my rants against The Bionic Woman Reboot.

Now back to Xena 2.0…Why doesn’t Lucy Know? here’s EW’s take on it:

If Lawless was out of the loop, it wouldn’t be the first time NBC has kept a cast of rebooted TV show in the dark: In 2014, the network dropped a surprise teaser for a little series called Heroes Reborn during a telecast of the Olympic Games, and the cast of the original series were as shocked as viewers.

Confused yet? My brain hurts. I’ll leave it to Xena to echo the Xenaverse’s feelings right about now…. (thanks to Klippart of the gif!)

Lucy Pitching For a Xena Movie!

Image635725941342966348Den of Geek has a story about Lucy pitching the idea for a Xena Movie/Revival/Xena Anything at Comic Con and elsewhere. I think it's way way way overdue.

The long long long saga (well over 10 years now) of Xenites wanting a  movie is getting more ferocious by the day. With the show finding new fans (welcome newbie Xenites!), it’s time for a Xena Revival! It’s all about those rights! Den of Geek asked Lucy about the possibility of a Xena movie. Check out the AUSXIP Xena Movie Page to see the lengths we have gone for this comeback

Lucy Lawless tells us about how she wants to play Xena: Warrior Princess again and how she'd continue the story. For almost 25 years, fans have asked Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and anyone who’d listen if there would be another Evil Deadmovie about Ash Williams. And for about just as long, this seemed to be a pipedream. Yet, come October, we’re getting a whole new Ash vs. Evil Dead television series starring the big chin—not to mention Xena: Warrior Princess herself, Ms. Lucy Lawless. Ergo, when having a lovely conversation with her during a San Diego roundtable interview, one Comic-Con miracle must surely mean another is just around the corner, right?

“I’ve been pitching that, actually,” Lawless said. “The fans really do want that, and I’ve met some people who’ve crowdfunded some things, and I’m just like, ‘Why don’t we just do that?’”

However, before Xena: Warrior Princess fans get their checkbooks ready, it might be best to wait a little longer for the character’s return. Indeed, Lawless lamented the red tape challenges that still seem to impede a Xena revival.

“It’s still about who owns the rights to Xena. But it would still be cool to do it again with Renée [O’Connor], me, Ted [Raimi], and Bruce. It’d be a fun little gig, but what that is I don’t really know.”

Of course, there is the other obstacle with Xena being dead at the end of the series, but Lawless has thought about this as well.

“So what? Technicality!” Lawless laughs. “No one really dies! Screw her head back on, it’s a bit wonky, and she’s got a really bad attitude since she’s been in a box for 20 years, so they’ve got to get Xena’s mojo back, and go and save the world somehow.”

Of course, hope will always spring eternal for the fandom. But in the much more immediate future, Lawless seems genuinely pleased to be participating in the Evil Dead franchise, which has become a family business since she married one of the original films’ creators and producer, Rob Tapert.

Ash Vs Evil Dead: Geek Nation Interviews Lucy at Comic Con

When Lucy Lawless joined us, she was all smiles. Up until now, her character on “Ash vs. Evil Dead” was a mystery. Not anymore, though, as it looks like Lawless will be playing a relative of  the original owner of the Necronomicon:

The first episode, I love it. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. And then it went to another level. And then it went to another level! And then they took it somewhere your imagination couldn’t even go! It’s super funny how he lets the Deadites out. Thats when my character whose last name is Knowby — Professor Knowby owned the Necronomicon in the movie…

According to Lawless, “Ash vs. Evil Dead” is mostly connected to Evil Dead II:

At the beginning we didn’t know what the show was going to be and it’s turning out to be truer to Evil Dead 2 — that’s just my words — its very true. You’re going to recognize some of the sets. And Bruce was in uncanny valley when he was inside these sets going, “Holy sh*t!” They even got the tree, meticulous details of the view outside the windows.

As mentioned earlier, “Ash vs. Evil Dead” goes heavy on the blood and gore. Lawless gave us a better idea of what it’s like working with the practical effects on set. Key word: pus:

We had this pus rig attached to a dagger and — did he tell you about the beer keg that explodes blood? This is pretty intense stuff. I have the pus rig and I’m cutting around this dude’s face and it oozes pus and then it hits the heart of it and all this blood goes blooosh. We only shot it once, it was so good the whole crew went WHOA behind the monitors. They’re constantly inventing and taking things to another level in an innovative and gruesome way. How do you keep topping yourself when you’ve got someone in a meat grinder, or whatever, but they keep coming up with new ideas that keep being realized on screen

Before we parted ways, Lucy Lawless wanted to reassure the Evil Dead fans with one last statement:

Everything you’ve dreamed is about to happen!

Press Release: Deadites Beware! Starz Announces Premiere Date and Releases First Live Action Trailer

ruby1DEADITES BEWARE! STARZ ANNOUNCES PREMIERE DATE AND RELEASES FIRST LIVE ACTION TRAILER FOR “ASH VS EVIL DEAD”
The Series from Original filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell is set to Premiere Saturday, October 31 at 9 PM

Beverly Hills, Calif., July 10, 2015 – STARZ today announced the highly anticipated premiere of original series “Ash vs Evil Dead” on Saturday, October 31 at 9 PM ET/PT and released the first live action trailer during the series’ Comic Con panel in San Diego. The 10-episode first season of the half-hour series is executive produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, Bruce Campbell, the original filmmakers of the franchise, and Craig DiGregorio who serves as executive producer and showrunner. “Ash vs Evil Dead,” which is currently in production in New Zealand, is the long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film franchise The Evil Dead.

Campbell reprises his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.

The cast is led by Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) in the role of Ash Williams, Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus”) as Ruby a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks, Ray Santiago (“Touch,” Meet the Fockers) as Pablo Simon Bolivar, an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick, Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) as Kelly Maxwell, a moody wild child trying to outrun her past and Jill Marie Jones (“Sleepy Hollow”) as Amanda Fisher, a disgraced Michigan State Trooper set to find our anti-hero Ash and prove his responsibility in the grisly murder of her partner.

Raimi directed the first episode of “Ash vs Evil Dead” that he wrote with Ivan Raimi (Darkman, Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell), and Tom Spezialy (“Chuck,” “Reaper,” “Desperate Housewives”). Raimi also serves as executive producer, with Rob Tapert (Evil Dead, “Spartacus,” Xena: Warrior Princess”) and Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) along with Craig DiGregorio (“Workaholics,” “Chuck”) who serves as executive producer/showrunner. Ivan Raimi serves as co-executive producer and Aaron Lam (“Spartacus”) and Chloe Smith (“Spartacus”) serve as producers.

Lucy’s Ruby Knowby Has Her Own Signature Weapon on Ash Vs Evil Dead

Image635723140944928984

More news about Lucy’s character of Ruby Knowby. In addition to finding out Ruby’s surname and connection with a character from the Evil Dead canon, now comes the about her weapon of choice:

Cinema Blend has an interesting article from Comic Con. It seems Bruce Campbell is not the only one with a signature weapon to kill Deadites (for those that don’t know what/who Deadites are: A "Deadite" is a life-force, person, animal or plant possessed by a Kandarian Demon. They are described as evil demonic zombies and are the main antagonists of the Evil Dead Franchise (Source). Ash’s weapon is the chainsaw.

Well now Lucy has revealed that her character of Ruby Knowby, related to Professor Raymond Knowby (see here about his character from Evil Dead) has a signature weapon of her own that kills Deadites.

Lucy said the following during interviews in the SDCC Press Room:

“She sure does. She has a very particular weapon, and it’s a dagger of sorts, but she has to be extremely careful with it. Because it has some powers which are magic. Well sawing people in half is [Ash’s] gig, I don’t think I’ll be stealing his gig. Trust me, he’s not letting me have the chainsaw. But, yes, she gets to kick some ass.”

Coming Soon: Ash Vs Evil Dead Action Figures–Ready for Ruby?

The following news is from DreadCentral.com about more action figures for Lucy’s collection:

ruby1The hands down highlight of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, at least on the horror front, was Starz’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” which debuted a trailer so full of awesome last night that the community was set ablaze with unbridled excitement. Soon, the show gets its own toy line.

Though “Ash vs. Evil Dead” doesn’t premiere on Starz until Halloween night, toy company NECA just announced on Twitter that they’ve picked up a license for the series.

Yes we have the licenses for Hateful 8 and the new ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ show,” they wrote. “More on those in the Fall.”

AvED: Lucy’s Ruby Has a Surname

Lucy-Lawless-Ash-vs-Evil-DeadThe DenOfGeek site has an article on Ash Vs Evil Dead at Comic Con and they revealed Ruby’s surname.

“That was straight out of the 1950s,” remarked Lucy Lawless, who also is in the series as Ruby Knowby (relative of the original Evil Dead Trilogy’s Professor Knowby).

For those unfamiliar with Evil Dead:

Professor Raymond Knowby is Annie Knowby's father and Henrietta Knowby's husband. He traveled to the Cabin to finish his research on the Necronomicon. However, things turn out very badly when he recites a passage from the book releasing the Evil from "Hell". He is attacked by his possessed wife and is forced to lock her in the cellar. Before succumbing to the Evil himself, he manages to leave a tape explaining the terror he has unleashed and manages to trap the Evil within the woods around the Cabin (how he does this is unknown), then later shows up as a spirit explaining to his daughter Annie on how to get rid of it. In The Evil Dead, his voice was performed by Bob Dorian and was personified by John Peaks in Evil Dead II. Source

EW Uncovers More About Lucy’s role as Ruby on Ash Vs Evil Dead

CI7u7q7UMAAK9UtEW interviewed Sam Raimi about Ash Vs Evil Dead and we found out more about Lucy's character (Ruby). Find out more about Lucy's new role as Ruby in Ash vs Evil Dead by going to the AUSXIP Lucy Lawless Ash vs Evil Dead Subsite

And I know Lucy Lawless is appearing in the show as Ruby. What can you tell me about her character?

She is a very mysterious character in the show. There is another character, Amanda Fisher, who is a state police detective who experienced the evil dead and her partner was possessed, and she had to murder her partner, and nobody believed her, and they're throwing her out of the force. She thinks she's losing her mind when Ruby comes upon her. And Ruby, starts to explain to her, "There's more to this world than meets the eye. There are things out there you don't understand." She sort of leads Amanda Fisher down the path of learning about the supernatural and the spirits from the Necronomicon, and that they really do exist in our world.

We're going to learn that Ruby believes Ash is responsible for -- and he is, actually -- but she thinks he's also an evil character, which he's not. She's going to hunt Ash down, and she's going to use Amanda Fisher -- this Michigan state police detective, who also has her own agenda -- to be her huntress, her woman in the field. So, for a time, she'll become Ash's adversary until she learns the truth. But then we're going to learn something else about Ruby, which might turn the tables. Don't wanna spoil that surprise for you.

Xena Conventions in Brazil? Is it Possible - It Sure is!

I was approached today about getting the word out about a possible Xena Convention in Brazil. I'm more than happy to pass on this great news (and coming on the heals of the Xenite Con 4 in Paris with Renee and Hudson). Time for Brazil to party (and we know they love to party) with Xena guests. So here's how this can be done (first sign the petition and then read on)

Petition can be found here

Message from Giselle:

We're part of the fandom of the show Xena: Warrior Princess, aka Xenite Fandom! We created a campaign in December 2014 called #XenaConBrasil, because we believe in the possibility of a Xena convention in Brazil!

We have a group and page on Facebook, a Youtube channel, a Twitter profile... A lot of weapons of advertising to gather fans of this show around this dream! And now we also have this Petition, that aims to gather the biggest number possible of people interested in a Xena Convention in Brazil, so that event companies notice us and realize the interest in making it true. All that we need is a company investing on Xenites to make the Convention happen!

The year of 2015 marks the last Official Xena Convention made by Creation Entertainment, it has been made since the year of 1997! That's right! From 1997 to 2015 fans get to the Convention! Unfortunetely the last one happened. The last one would be in 2012, but it extended for 3 more years due to the huge fanbase and money they make to the company.

French fans are still keeping the tradition with Conventions in Paris, that goes on for some time. But we, brazilian fans, don't have the conditions to go to Europe to be with our favorite cast, that's why we desperately need a Convention in Brazil!
Fans from neighbor countries would also come here (Argentina, Venezuela...) and it would be easier for north-american fans, since we're all orphans of USA Conventions. A lot of fans would follow the cast to Brazil, like they did times before, without a doubt!

It's worth noticing that we Xenites would do everything possible to help with voluntary work on the Convention. We've been seeing this idea be used on USA conventions and we're looking forward to do the same. If our help can be used by the #XenaConBrasil organization, for your company, please use it! We know that this would bring mutual advantages like, for example, lower price on the tickets. Xenites CAN work on this Convention, without a doubt!

Do a little research about our fandom, our campaign and our favorite show! Then you'll be sure that the Xenite Fandom is special and you won't regret investing in us!

Xenites and Xena Warrior Princess fans, sign this petition! Let's show that we're a huge fanbase and that we want a Convention with the Xena Warrior Princess cast in Brazil!

Battle on! o/
