Lucy Lawless lays down the law when she plays an FBI agent tracking a kidnapped child on the Jan. 18 episode of Veronica Mars.

"Who can believe that Veronica Mars would really be part of some kind of conspiracy to steal a child?" asks Lawless (D'Anna, Battlestar Galactica; Xena, Xena: Warrior Princess), who plays Agent Morris.

On the heels of Meg's death, Sheriff Lamb Informs Veronica that Duncan has kidnapped his newborn son from his ex-girlfriend Meg's parents and gone on the lam. "The sheriff is having a tough time winding things up on his own," previews Lawless. "We come in, osten- sibly to help, and drive the poor sheriff's self-esteem into the ground," she laughs. Morris and her partner, Agent Willis (C.S. Keys), decide to ascertain whether Veronica has turned criminal and helped spring her first love with his offspring. But Morris doesn't know that Duncan actually breaks up with Veronica.

"Veronica certainly is involved," asserts Lawless. "Most definitely we work against one another." However, Lawless admits, "despite Morris' suspicion about Veronica, she cannot help liking her and admiring her."

So does that mean the teen sleuth outfoxes the Feds? "What's the show called?" teases Lawless. "That's who wins. Game, set, match: Veronica Mars. That's one of the perks of being No. 1 on the call sheet."

Veronica Mars airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on UPN. __
