This is the kiss which first established Lucy Lawless as a gay icon.

Her role in a 16-minute Kiwi short film has become Hollywood's hottest property.

Years before she began kicking butt as Xena: Warrior Princess, the Auckland actress played a tow-truck driving lesbiam in art-house flick Peach.

In the movie, Lucy shares a passionate kiss with young Maori mum, Sal.

The trailer for the 1993 film says: "Another oppressively hot and noisy afternoon in Sal's tough neighbourhood explodes when she discovers unexpected desire and crosses the invisible line between merely seeing beauty and experiencing it."

Peach, backed by the NZ Film Commission, is being released in video stores across America next month. The 16mm movie is expected to cause a sensation in the US where Lucy is a cult character. The internet has 14 sites devoted to Lucy including one based entirely on Xena's sexuality.

Peach producer Caterina De Nave said Lucy sizzled in the Kiwi film. "I can tell you Lucy's fantastic in it," she said.
