What's Lucy Lawless Really Like?

I was interested in reading this Q&A from The TorchOnline in answering a reader's question about Lucy was like (and any long time Lucy fan will know, Lucy is NOTHING like Xena but we (long time fans) seem to forget that other people don't know that!

Q: What's Lucy Lawless really like? - Andrew, Hartford, CT

Q: Your question is, no doubt, prompted by the fact that the Oracle recently interviewed the Xena star (since it was mostly about her new show Spartacus: Blood and Sand, most of the interview with run closer to its January air-date).

Lucy is beautiful -- and looks remarkably fit and youthful for 41 -- but it is a very approachable beauty, not like some celebrities I've interviewed who are so flawless, almost godlike, that it seems a little creepy.

But what struck me the most is how she is nothing like Xena. Of course I knew that that's just a character she played, but on some level, I guess I thought it couldn't be too far from who she really is. Unlike Xena, Lucy is the opposite of serious. She is smart and quick and light and very irreverent. The best word I can use is impish, almost seeming to take delight in saying provocative or quirky things...Read More

High Res Images from Cast of Thousands Event

lucysignon14.jpg

Greenpeace has released 8 high resolution images from the recent Cast of Thousands events in Auckland.

Actors Lucy Lawless and Keisha Castle Hughes, ex-Good editor Francesca Price, scientist Jim Salinger, Waitakere mayor Bob Harvey and other high-profile New Zealanders all appeared to have broken their arms when they gathered in Auckland today to launch the next stage of the Greenpeace Sign On campaign. Sporting blue casts, in homage to John Key's January mishap that resulted in a broken arm, the celebrities gathered signatures on their casts and on the street for the Sign On campaign, lobbying the New Zealand government to commit to a 40 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2020.

Lucy Lawless Wishes They Hadn't Killed Xena

Brent from The TorchOnline recently interviewed Lucy and one of the issues discussed was the topic of Xena (naturally) and the way Xena ended and the fans reaction to that ending. Lucy has had a change of heart with the way she dealt with the aftermath of the fan reaction which is very interesting. Brent was kind enough to ask my opinion about the fan reaction of Xena's demise and this is his article:

Lucy Lawless Wishes They Hadn't Killed Xena

When Lucy Lawless, star of the cult fantasy hit Xena: Warrior Princess, first heard that her character was going to be killed in the show's 2001 series finale, she thought it was a terrific idea, but she has since changed her mind.

"At the time, we thought that was a really strong choice," Lawless says in an exclusive interview with TheTorchOnline.com. "But I think it really hurt the fans. I wish we hadn't done it, actually."

In the two-part finale, "A Friend in Need," Xena finds herself unable to fight a powerful spiritual being. In order to be able to do so, she allows herself to be shot full of arrows. Once dead, her head is cut off, and she is cremated. The episodes feature several relatively gruesome scenes of the decapitated body.

The Age of Stupid US Premiere 21 September 2009

Lizzie Gillett, the producer of The Age of Stupid - (the movie premiere Lucy attended on 19 August 2009 in Auckland) sent the following note about the movie and the premiere in the US on 21 September 2009. If you wish to support this film, please pass this along to other sites, forums and email lists:

What is this movie about?

'The Age Of Stupid is the documentary-drama-animation hybrid from Director Franny Armstrong (McLibel, Drowned Out) and Oscar-winning Producer John Battsek (One Day In September, Live Forever, In the Shadow of the Moon). Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite (In The Name of the Father, Brassed Off, The Usual Suspects) stars as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055. He watches 'archive' footage from 2008 and asks: Why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance? Runaway climate change has ravaged the planet by 2055. Pete plays the founder of The Global Archive, a storage facility located in the (now melted) Arctic, preserving all of humanity's achievements in the hope that the planet might one day be habitable again. Or that intelligent life may arrive and make use of all that weve achieved. He pulls together clips of archive news and documentary from 1950-2008 to build a message showing what went wrong and why. He focuses on six human stories

Global Premiere: America

stupid_eflyer.jpgBrought to you by Fathom Events,  The Age of Stupid will launch in America on September 21st 2009 from a solar-powered cinema tent in New York LIVE to 115,000 people in 400 movie theatres right across the country. This One Night Only live event is your only chance to see The Age of Stupid on the big screen and is timed for the day before the UN's climate meeting on September 22nd, when 80 Heads of State - and therefore the world's media - will gather in New York. (The event has also just been confirmed as being an official part of UN Climate Week.)

As an INclusive, rather than EXclusive event, everyone is invited to go to their local theatre to watch the VIPs arrive in Manhattan by boat, bike, rickshaw, chipfat car or skateboard, before braving the paparazzi on the green carpet. Following the first US screening of The Age of Stupid, there will be a further 40 minute live event featuring Kofi AnnanGillian AndersonMary Robinson, the film's director Franny Armstrong, the star of the film Pete Postlethwaite, and other leading thinkers, celebrities and political figures from around the world.  Audiences will hear from scientists working in the Himalayas and Indonesian rain forest via live satellite link and from a group of children speaking from the very room in Copenhagen in which all our futures will be decided at the UN climate summit in DecemberRadiohead's Thom Yorke will wrap up the evening with a short acoustic performance.

The timings are:  7:30 PM ET/  6:30 PM CT /  5:30 PM MT /  tape delayed 8PM PT.

For a taste of what to expect, have a look at the UK launch in March 2009, which produced just 1% of the emissions of a standard Hollywood event and which broke the Guinness World Record for biggest simultaneous premiere.

Tickets now on sale - and list of participating theatres - here: http://www.ageofstupid.net/usa

How you can help (even if you're not in US)

We have a grand total of zero dollars for advertising, so please, please help however you can:

1. Buy tickets to your local cinema for you, your mum, your boyfriend, your boyfriend's hairdresser and all their friends
2. Put together an outing for your school/sports team/church - make an evening of it by arranging a meal before or after the event (after may be better, as you'll all hopefully be inspired to start discussing how you can get involved in climate actions in your area)
3. Email the attached e-flyer to all your American friends, asking them to pass it on. The paragraph above (under "Global Premiere: America) is a good basic intro you could send your pals if they don't want all this chitchat (but why wouldn't they?!?)
4. Send the info round on any mailing list you are part of
5. Go onto the US listing page (http://www.ageofstupid.net/usa ), look through the locations and then send the details direct to your friends in whichever town/city they're in. There's an easy widget on each individual theatre's page, which lets you send the details without faffing around with emails.
6. Go mad on Facebook
7. Go mad on Twitter
8. Rate/review the film (if you've seen it) on the Fandango website (the US ticket sellers). Seeing loads of enthusiastic reviews makes a really big difference to people who are undecided as to whether or not to go
9. Go along to any climate/enviro/activist meetings happening in your area and do a quick one minute talk about the Stupid launch
10.  If you are in the US and able to hand out flyers / put up posters in your nearest theatre, please email ali@ageofstupid.net for instructions

A massive thank you to all the people who've put in such huge amounts of effort to get us to the starting line here in the US: particularly Amy & Bethany from Fathom,  Martin from Greenpeace, Ben from tcktcktck, Laura from MoveOn, Lenny & Eric from All Mobile Video,  Aaron & Lisa from Usual Suspects and Meghan from Rogers & Cowan. Onwards...

Global Premiere: All Other Countries

Tickets will be going on sale later this week. Latest exciting additions: Nigeria, Iraq and Sierra Leone. But Antarctica not looking so good, as there is no ship/plane going there before September who could drop a DVD off -  and their broadband is apparently not up to downloading a whole film. Shucks.

Lucy To Speak at Mt Albert Historical Society Meeting

lucy-mountalbert.jpg

The New Zealand newspapers Auckland City Harbour News and Central Leader have an article about Lucy's return to Mount Albert (her dad was Mayor of Mount Albert while Lucy was a youngster). Lucy will be speaking at the Mt Albert Historical Society's meeting tomorrow, 2pm, at the Mt Albert Senior Citizens Clubrooms, Wairere Ave. The meeting is open to the public.

Part of the article says...

Before she was a heroine of the small screen, Lucy Lawless lived in Mt Albert and delivered the local newspaper for pocket money.

It didn't work out as a long-term career.

"I hid two bunches under a hedge and got fired," says the former Xena star.

After living and filming abroad, the actress says she is "thrilled" to be back home in Auckland, where she is filming the series Spartacus and is an ambassador for Greenpeace's Sign On campaign about climate change.

Ms Lawless, a former Marist College student, says she's enjoying spending time catching up with old friends.

"I'm still friends with all my old girlfriends. Not only do I have three generations of my own family to call on as a support network, I've also got my girlfriends.

"It's wonderful. I've been living overseas with none of that."

Lucy to Attend 2010 Xena Convention - NOT CONFIRMED

19 August 2009 Update

Well it seems that was not quite right. The Creation web site was updated prematurely and Lucy is NOT confirmed as yet. They are working to see if it's going to fit with her schedule so basically we are back to not knowing if Lucy will or will not be at the Convention. Stay tuned.

18 August 2009

Lucy has been added to the 2010 Xena Convention guest list according to the Official 2010 Xena Convention page on Creation Entertainment's site - must be the first time that Lucy has confirmed so far in advance (that I can remember). Way cool!  The 2010 Xena Convention will be celebrating 15 years of Xena which is unbelievable. A show that has changed so many people's lives including the cast and crew. We are getting new fans coming into the fandom and that ol' warrior and her bard have such a loyal following.

Sign On Campaign Cast of Thousands Pics News & Video

Added an events page for the Cast of Thousands Sign On Campaign event (where the pics/news/video will be added) in Auckland yesterday (18 August 2009) with news, pictures and video clips. News submitted by JulieH, Barbara Davies and Janna.

The scientists say an emissions reduction target of 40% by 2020 is needed. Anything else is flim flam," said Lucy Lawless. "100,000 Kiwis have already signed on to 40% by 2020 and John Key needs to listen. A government belongs to its people -not the other way round."

"Many local and world leaders signed John Key's cast; we need that kind of collaboration and teamwork now on climate change," said Greenpeace's Simon Boxer.

Spartacus Casting Call - Herald on Sunday Spy

Herald on Sunday - Spy Column 16 August 2009

*Casting call*

gal/Promo_Images/Lucretia/_thb_lucretia05.jpgOne young extra who's eager to make her name in the world of acting told * Spy* about a casting call she's taking part in on the set of hit American TV show *Spartacus *currently shooting in West Auckland.

Casting agents are looking for girls to play servants. Modesty is not an option. The role calls for frontal nudity and casting agents are preferably looking for girls with their own pubic hair, otherwise, I'm told, the girls will be fitted with wigs.

No joke! A frontal falsie! Is there some sort of specialist crotch-toupee stylist to fit them?

Admittedly, this prudish columnist is completely clueless to the inside machinations of film sets and broke out into hysterical fits of adolescent giggles when this story crossed my lap, er desk, but it appears thesps I've spoken to are a lot more mature. Being fitted for a merkin is par of the course, apparently.

In fact, the show's leading lady, *Lucy Lawless*, told EW.com last month that she was offered a pubic wig for her first full-frontal nude scene, but admitted there was pressure on the *Spartacus* set to go au natural.

She said: "I haven't worn it [the pubic wig] yet... I was like 'have you got a red one?' We have one just in case. We have one person in the cast who insists on being naked... I think that person thinks it will surprise the person they're acting opposite."

She added of the show: "There's full frontal male nudity. You see plenty, trust me. I'm a little traumatized."

Lucy Pushes for Climate Change Today and Pictures

SignOn_Lucy&Keisha.jpg

There were three articles today about the next phase of the Sign On Campaign which Lucy was involved in. The first is a press release from Greenpeace which had this quote from Lucy:

"The scientists say an emissions reduction target of 40% by 2020 is needed. Anything else is flim flam," said Lucy Lawless. "100,000 Kiwis have already signed on to 40% by 2020 and John Key needs to listen. A government belongs to its people -not the other way round."

Green-loving Kiwi celebs want your signatures

Actresses Lucy Lawless and Keisha Castle-Hughes sported blue casts on their arms to help launch a climate campaign in Auckland today.

The cast, which had the slogan, "Come on John, Sign On" written across it, aims to urge the Government to adopt a 40 percent emissions reduction target by 2020.

The Sign On campaign has already attracted nearly 100,000 supporters in three months, and Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey and climate scientist Jim Salinger were among the people who helped raise the campaign's profile today.

Passers-by in Auckland's Vulcan Lane were invited to sign the arm casts, which will then be worn at events in the lead-up to the Copenhagen climate summit in December.

Otago Daily Times - 18 August 2009

Simon Boxer, senior climate campaigner at Greenpeace, said Prime Minister John Key was the one person who could ensure New Zealand upped its climate change commitments.

"John Key may think that by announcing a conditional target of 10 to 20 percent the issue is done and dusted. I think he'll find quite the opposite as we get closer to Copenhagen. After all it's only New Zealand's initial offer in the negotiations," Mr Boxer said.

Ms Lawless said scientists believed an emissions reduction target of 40 percent by 2020 was needed.

"100,000 Kiwis have already signed on to 40 percent by 2020 and John Key needs to listen. A government belongs to its people - not the other way round," Ms Lawless said.

Campaigners held a banner which read, "Join the cast of thousands" to encourage people to sign on to the campaign.

Lucy To Attend Age of Stupid Premiere 19 Aug 09

The Greenpeace blog has posted the news that Lucy will be attending The Age of Stupid movie premiere on 19 August 2009. The kiwi movie stars Pete Postlethwaite as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking back at news footage and asking: why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?

The Age of Stupid
17. August 2009, 9:33 Uhr

The Age of Stupid, from director Franny Armstrong (McLibel), and Kiwi Producer Lizzie Gillett, stars Pete Postlethwaite as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking back at news footage and asking: why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?

It's a must see.

Following the extraordinary success of the UK People's Premiere, The Age of Stupid will be launched simultaneously in Australia and New Zealand at the biggest - and greenest - live film event the two countries have ever seen.

On Weds 19th August, celebrities will arrive at both the Sydney Theatre and at a specially-constructed solar powered tent in downtown Auckland. The Auckland event is being hosted by Oxfam and Greenpeace. The celebrities, who'll include Sign On ambassadors Lucy Lawless and Keisha Castle-Hughes, will brave the cameras on the green carpet before being welcomed by MC Oliver Driver.

Following the screening of the film, there'll be a live link up with the Sydney event, before a Q and A with producer Lizzie Gillett, chaired by broadcaster Noelle McCarthy.

Meanwhile, across town, the film will open in all Hoyts cinemas. So there's no excuse for missing it! See below for screening times.

AUSXIP Spartacus Forum Now Online

Welcome to the new Spartacus forum on AUSXIP Talking Xena. This space has been created to chat about the show, discuss the episodes, create art and just have a great time.

The AUSXIP Talking Xena moderators and I felt the need to have a special place for this new show because it will generate a lot of discussion and topics may get lost in the Lucy Chat area. It's been a long time since Lucy has been a regular on a tv show and we honour that with this forum.

I want to thank Tobias for designing this new section that gives it such a great feel and let's have fun!

With any new home, there is a few house rules and these are:

1. Please do not post screencaptures or images that show naughty bits (male or female) as this is an open forum where minors can read messages and it goes against AUSXIP and AUSXIP Talking Xena policy regarding Spartacus and nudity.

2. Banners are also included in that policy.

3. If you would like to discuss the episodes please use SPOILER in the topic header and some space in the message just to be on the safe side as a courtesy for those keeping spoiler free.

4. Artwork can be showcased here (be aware of rule #1) and they will also be showcased on AUSXIP Spartacus Blood and Sand Web Site

Other than those rules; please have alot of fun in chatting about Spartacus Blood and Sand. It promises to be a great show!

Click here to go to the new forum (AUSXIP Talking Xena members who are already registered can post immediately. If you are not a member and would like to join in the discussions, please register first.

Sign On Campaign - Q&A with Govt Ministers

The following is a transcript of the Q&A from the NZ Parliament dealing with the Carbon Emissions target:

Questions And Answers - 6 August 2009
Friday, 7 August 2009, 11:02 am
Press Release: Office of the Clerk

(uncorrected transcript--subject to correction and further editing)

THURSDAY, 6 AUGUST 2009
QUESTIONS FOR ORAL ANSWER
QUESTIONS TO MINISTERS

Charles Chauvel: Does the Prime Minister think that actors Lucy Lawless, Robyn Malcolm, and Cliff Curtis, who are also participating in the Sign On campaign, should stick to acting, and has he advised Michael Jones to "stick to rugby and keep out of politics", or do different rules apply to potential National Party recruits?

Hon BILL ENGLISH (Acting Prime Minister):  They are all eminent New Zealand actors, and sticking to acting may well be a recipe for further success for them. However, an advertising campaign is not a replacement for serious analysis of the impact of a 40 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2020. Any serious analysis would tell us that such a reduction would have a very negative impact on our economy and on people's livelihoods.

Lucy At 2009 NZ WIFTI Awards

It appears that Lucy was a presenter again at the New Zealand WIFTI Awards (Women in Film and Television International) in New Zealand judging by the following tweet submitted by Barbara Davies:

http://twitter.com/frayzoor/statuses/3163342055

#WIFT Lucy lawless presenting outstanding contribution award: caterina de nave. Very well deserved.

On trying to find out when Lucy was last at the WIFTI I came across this article:

A CONVERSATION WITH LUCY LAWLESS, WIFTI PATRON

"I just want to do the work," stated actress and 2004 WIFTI World Summit patron Lucy Lawless during a moderated conversation before a packed Summit crowd. "I want to make people laugh and make them cry." Lucy mainly had us laughing with her enthusiasm for life and her irrepressible sense of humor, not only that day but throughout the World Summit in April 2004. A native of New Zealand and longtime WIFT Auckland member, Lucy was involved in many activities at the Summit.

The hour-long conversation with the star of the cult television favorite Xena: Warrior Princess and veteran actress of many other films helped remind us all that the current trendiness of New Zealand as a "hot" filming location really began with Hercules, in which the Xena character was introduced, and then solidified when Xena was spun-off with her own series. Both series ran for many years, bringing New Zealand's gorgeous locations and multi-talented crew base to the attention of producers worldwide.

Lucy's love of her craft was obvious during the course of the conversation. When asked which medium she preferred, TV or film, she described them as the "performance sampler pack of life - I like them all... Film and TV are not different at all. It's that big, friendly black eye of the camera." What's important, she went on to say, was that you get to work "in an atmosphere where you can be free to fail; where you can work together with the crew to make things happen." Was "Xena: Warrior Princess" the high point of her career? Lucy replied that she hopes that is yet to come. "The things I'm really proud of - I'm proud of my work and the way we went about it. The demands of the (Xena) schedule needed a good work ethic. But I don't want to be the morale leader anymore or the cheerleader. I just want to do the work." Lucy admitted that she wanted to be an actress her whole life. She recounted a story from her childhood about when an uncle asked her, "What do you want to be when you grow up, Lucy Ryan?" To which she replied, without hesitation and with great enthusiasm, "Famous!"

Lucy's goals now include working back home in New Zealand more, even though she splits her time between New Zealand and the United States. She reveals that she would like to do something "culturally significant", explaining, "I used to think that I was a citizen of the planet, but I'm not. I'm a citizen of New Zealand. I'm proud to be a Kiwi. I think Bette Davis said, 'Do you drop out as you age or take the diminishing roles and make something more of it?' I want to fill my life with rich jewels, no coulda, woulda, shoulda. I hope that on my deathbed that I can go 'Yes! I sucked up life!'"

Lucy's involvement with WIFT is important to her, giving her "integrity of purpose." Being patron to the World Summit provided, she says, "such a joyous week hanging out with you guys. I had a tricky time earlier this year, so to come along this week and be in the moment has been so good for my spirit. It's been a real boost." She went on to add that, "I've been very blessed. I fell in with a production that was the first to revive the female action hero...Now look at Buffy and Alias."

Like many professional women, Lucy Lawless still finds time to be mother to her three children. In the future, she would like to do more writing, in which she is more interested than directing. But acting is still her love. "It's a great career. I need to have a real connection to people. You're paid to feel things deeply." Those of us who attended the World Summit in Auckland last April were also blessed and grateful to experience Lucy's incredible energy, naughty wit and down-to-earth attitude, as well as her much appreciated patronage.

SCENES: GLIMPSES & HIGHLIGHTS Lucy and Friends

WIFTI Summit patron, Lucy Lawless, in what many of us found to be "typical" Kiwi fashion, gently corralled about 12 women from various countries who were attending the Summit for an impromptu performances before the screening of Gaylene Preston's latest film, "Perfect Strangers." Called "Lucy & Friends", attendees were treated to an assortment of talent including poetry readings by Doreen Blunt of Washington, DC, USA and Sherry Richardson of Atlanta, Georgia, USA; a recounting of her experiences with Mother Theresa in India by Pratibha Parmar of the United Kingdom, a re-telling of a Greek myth by Gayle Economos of Baltimore, Maryland, USA, with the grand finale a lovely rendition of the Judy Collins' song "Suzanne" by none other than Lucy herself.

A Day in the Life of Press Tour - TV Guide 30 May 2009

The following article was posted on TV Guide about the TCA Spartacus panel.

tcalucy.jpgA Day in the Life of Press Tour

Much more buzz was generated by Starz screening a graphic (sexually and violent) clip from the 300-style action series Spartacus: Blood and Sand (premieres Jan. 22), an unedited version of a blood-drenched teaser shown last week at Comic-Con. This led to much discussion of nudity. Lucy Lawless, reunited with her Xena producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, plays the Lady Macbeth villainess of the piece, and said she would indeed be naked.

"I'm afraid so. Sometimes," though she hasn't had to do so entirely yet. "I'm kind of praying that day never comes, but it's really stressful. I don't like it."

For the males in the cast who have to flaunt it all, an enhanced prosthetic has been designed that has been dubbed "the Kirk Douglas," in honor of the star of the original Spartacus movie. Lawless joked: "That thing gets shared around, though. At the moment, it's pinned to the wall next to all the merkins in the makeup truck."
