Image

EW has a clip from Adventure Time (Lucy does the voice over of the Queen of the Ants).

Click on the image to watch the clip

Xena fans rejoice! The hit Cartoon Network series Adventure Time celebrates Thanksgiving this week with four new episodes—and on Friday, the animated show will feature guest voice Lucy Lawless. Lawless plays the militaristic Queen of the Ants, who drafts Finn into the never-ending battle between ants, worms, and flies. Somehow, this all has something to do with dental care.

Watch the clip below; new episodes of Adventure Time air Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday this week. (There will also be a Finn and Jake float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade on Thursday. No shortage of Adventure Time this week, is what we’re getting at.)

Why It Matters What a Female Action Hero Wears - Washington Post 20 November

Katniss Everdeen doesn’t dress to impress. The heroine of “The Hunger Games” movies is occasionally forced to don a pretty gown, but generally speaking Jennifer Lawrence’s character doesn’t make sartorial statements — she makes physical ones. She runs and hunts and shoots down planes with arrows, and in her earth-toned cargo pants and jackets, the feats are the focus.

That’s not often the case with female action heroes, who are somehow supposed to take down bad guys while oozing sex appeal. Katniss wasn’t the first femme-fighter to buck the trend, but when she first graced the big screen in 2012, she was the first in quite some time. And others seem to be following suit: In “Lucy,” “Divergent” and the upcoming “Jupiter Ascending,” the focus has shifted from the protagonist’s skin to her skill.

How did we get here? Take a look at the (by no means exhaustive) evolution of the female action hero over the last 40 years.

Years: Heroine1995-2001

Unlike Nikita, the protagonist of this television series stood out because she looked like she could actually overpower people. Lucy Lawless had played an Amazon before taking on this role of a warlord-turned-vigilante. But as the heroine got buffer, her outfits got smaller: She, like Leia, also sported a metal bikini at times.

Interview: Lucy Talks to Film International about The Code 31 October 2014

Still Powerful in the Political: Lucy Lawless on The Code

Film International
31 October 2014

Lucy Lawless is no stranger to television. She has traversed time itself from swords and sandals (Xena: Warrior Princess, 1995-2001, filmed in her home country, New Zealand) and science-fiction (Battlestar Galactica, 2005-2009) to dramas down under in Jane Campion’s miniseries Top of the Lake (2013) and now Shelley Birse’s The Code (2014). The Code concerns a political cover-up involving aboriginal teens injured in a car crash. Offering an exploration into the cultural complexities of Australia, The Code connects to a piece Lawless penned for The New Zealand Herald on the “aboriginal handshake.”

Touching on the archetypal cornerstones of corruption and journalistic attempts to uncover the truth, The Code is the latest foreign import to fill BBC Four’s Saturday evening 9pm slot, diversifying British broadcast scheduling to showcase international television drama. Open to all UK viewers and therein void of an attempt to hold them to ransom (unlike its rival, the SKY Broadcasting Company), the BBC has branched out from European-based drama to take in a wider and valuable world perspective.

In conversation with Film International’s Paul Risker, Lawless revealed the importance of an early Disney animation in her journey to the screen; her initial impressions of The Code, and the opportunity it afforded her to play a character unique in contrast to all of her onscreen identities; as well as reflecting on The Code‘s place within modern storytelling and its pursuit to tell an honest story.
