'Xena' Meets 'Tarzan'

"Xena: Warrior Princess"'s LUCY LAWLESS took a few years off from series TV to have a baby and spend time with her children, but now she's back -- and, boy, does she look different! On tonight's ET, we go one-on-one with Lucy and her co- star TRAVIS FIMMEL on the Toronto set of The WB's new drama, "Tarzan," premiering Sunday, October 5, at 9 p.m. Full Story

Xena’s Lucy hooks up with Tarzan

Former Xena star Lucy Lawless will join Australian male model Travis Fimmel in the new TV version of Tarzan.

Lawless will play publisher Kathleen Clayton, aunt to Fimmel’s Tarzan. The series is a re-telling of the famous Tarzan story, but with a twist.

Aired on America’s WB network, it will feature a teen-aged Tarzan as he adjusts to life in the jungle of New York City.

Lawless also gets a development deal with the network for a series targeted for the 2004/2005 season. If Tarzan and Lawless are hits, that deal may have to be put on hold.

Warrior Women Documentary

The Warrior Women Documentary will start airing on UK Discovery Channel October 15 - September 15 was a misprint.

Warrior Women / Lozen episode set in New Mexico -- Lucy finished filming last Saturday. She did the last segment on Lozen in New Mexico. Because of her work on Tarzan, she flew from Toronto on Monday into Albuquerque and then made the two-hour drive to Truth or Consequences. I met her there and we filmed an interview about the making of the series that will be part of fan club kit #7. It was an interesting time -- yipping coyotes and all. I'll write more this week.

Lucy mentioned in the new US TVGuide. Click on image to see the larger file.

Snippet about TARZAN (mention of other shows snipped)

(8 p.m., The WB, Oct. 5) - It's "no flights, no tights" on the network's Smallville, so don't expect this contemporary version of the storied ape man to yell or pound his chest in his already noisy new habitat - New York City.

Off-camera, though, newcomer Travis Fimmel, a former Australian farmer, may be hard-pressed to resist pounding down a few cold ones. A TV Guide cover story portrayed him as an accomplished boozer who said, "My idea of working out is drinking whiskey - instead of beer." He's changed his tune a bit since then.

"I can't drink if I have to get up early, man. It kills me," he says. "I'm happy not to drink." Maybe Lucy Lawless can help keep him in line. The former star of "Xena: Warrior Princess" recently joined the cast as Tarzan's Aunt Kathleen.

  • The charity event honoring Lucy Lawless, that was supposed to take place in Hollywood, CA last week, was unfortunately canceled. This was due to the fact that Lucy was in Canada filming her new role on WB's "Tarzan." Please know that the event should be rescheduled soon, and we will still award one lucky Maven with an invitation to attend. If the charity event is not rescheduled, then we will send a maven to some other event where Lucy is the guest of honor.

Bardfest Update

SILENT AUCTION FOR AUTOGRAPHED CANVAS

This canvas is truly one-of-a-kind, and a must for the true Xena: Warrior Princess fan. The canvas is hand illustrated with the Chakram and Sais, and signed by Rob Tapert, Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor.

There is a touching story behind the creation of this unique piece. When we all thought T. Novan had just a short time left with us, she received the canvas as a gift - a memento for use at her funeral. TN hand carried it to the 2001 Pasadena convention, where many saw her in her wheel chair. There, the three stars met with her and signed the canvas. The piece is framed in a museum quality mount, with a photograph of Rob, Lucy and Renee standing in front of Rob's Folly in Auckland, New Zealand.

This unique piece is 28" by 48" and weighs approximately 20 lbs with glass and frame.

Our minimum bid is $1,200.

We will conduct a silent auction for this incomparable piece, giving individuals who are not in attendance at DC BardFest an equal opportunity to acquire this magnificent creation and contribute to a fine charitable cause. We will accept online silent bids at auction@dcbardfest.com.

We will post the highest bid received each evening. Bids will remain open until Midnight on Saturday, October 4th, and participants at DC BardFest will have the opportunity to submit silent bids as well. At Midnight, we will review all bids, both online and those submitted at DC BardFest and announce the winning bid Sunday morning.

TN is in full remission and she feels this very special object should go to helping children facing the same risks she did - and we hope that the contribution helps at least one child find the same kind of miracle TN did.

A picture of the canvas can be viewed here: http://www.dcbardfest.com/canvas.htm

Zap2It has announced that Lucy will be in a new show called Tarzan which airs 5 October in the US

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Xena's warrior cry is about to make beautiful music with Tarzan's monkey holler.
Lucy Lawless is joining the cast of The WB's "Tarzan" in the crucial (but only recently added) part of Tarzan's aunt.
The Kiwi actress will play Kathleen Clayton, a publishing magnate and younger sister of Mitch Pileggi's Richard Clayton, the acting head of Greystoke Industries. Kathleen and Richard have very different ideas of how to handle their recently rediscovered nephew Jack (Travis Fimmel). Richard believes that Tarzan must be rehabilitated and reintroduced to non-simian society, while Kathleen wants to give the monkey man time to find his own way.
Both may have ulterior motives, as they know that whoever controls Tarzan also controls Greystoke.
"Lucy has a tremendous sense of humor, warmth and grace," says The WB's Entertainment President Jordan Levin. "She has a fun, larger-than-life personality that will shape the character of Kathleen Clayton as she makes it her own and that is what attracted us to her for future development."
Lawless, who starred in "Xena: Warrior Princess" from 1995 until 2001, is only signed as a regular for the show's first season. Her deal with The WB also includes an exclusive series development deal for the 2004-2005 season.
"Tarzan" reunites Lawless with executive producer Laura Ziskin, who performed the same duties on "Spider-Man," which featured a small cameo from Gabrielle's former bosom buddy.

Some tidbits from the Lucy Chat on USAToday.com which was very short and sweet:

  • When asked about the commentary on the DVDs and if there will be more of this for the release of the other seasons, Lucy indicated that there will be and Rob inspired both her and Renee.
  • When asked if she kept in contact with Renee - Lucy said
Yes. I talk to her every couple of weeks or every month. We usually live in different countries, which makes visiting difficult. She'll be a lifelong friend, since we feel we did some serious growing up together.
  • When questioned about the impact that Xena and Lucy had on victims of domestic violence Lucy said:
In a way it freaks me out to think that people took such deep messages and were given such strong inspiration for a show, because we never truly recognized its power, at least I didn't. I'm almost glad I didn't know, because the responsibility would have been too great. I wouldn't have been able to put one foot in front of another. I think those people were waiting for an impulse to make a change, and I'm glad Xena was it. But it scares me to think I could have made people jump the other way. I know from my work with domestic violence you never tell a woman to leave her husband. You can help her if she asks for it, but you can't instigate putting her in danger. It freaks me out that our show could instigate a situation where a woman could have been in danger. I'm not afraid to go anywhere in my own dark interior.
  • When asked what was the greatest thing to come out of Xena - Lucy responded:
For me personally, I got to meet my last partner and the father of my children and make some great friends. But for the world, the fans of Xena became such a force for good that they've raised a lot of money for different charities and causes. They really are the phenomenon. I can't take credit for any of it - I was just getting paid to do a job. I'm stymied by the attention and the praise I get simply for being the most visible cog in the machine. The greatest thing? The quality of fans - definitely

The following is from Sharon Delaney/OFC about Lucy's upcoming role in The Ugly Americans

Lucy on her recent trip to Prague:
I did a juicy little cameo in a Dreamworks movie, produced by Ivan Reitman, which I believe will be entitled The Ugly Americans, but nobody was sure at that stage.  It's about four American kids traveling across Europe in search of love, romance and, really, wanting to get laid -- as teenagers often do.  (to be continued)

Perfect Possibilities to Play Andy Dick's Moms
Now that word has hit the street that Less Than Perfect is casting the lesbian mothers of resident odd duck Owen (Andy Dick), every ambiguously gay duo in Hollywood ought to be beating a path to the ABC witcom's offices. But before producers hand over the plum parts, perhaps they should review our list of unusual suspects. Some of these tag teams, you have to admit, have always seemed queer as folk.

[long list snipped]

Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor: We know — the Xena gal pals are way too young, not to mention fine, to have produced a child as old and, um, unique-looking as Owen. But if Will & Grace can fool Emmy voters into thinking it's worthier than this endearing little show, then surely this endearing little show can dupe viewers into buying the lookers as Owen's red-hot mamas.

Lucy (or as Sharon describes her as a "crazed kiwi woman" drew a Xena and Gabrielle sketch for the fan club page which is majorly cute. The sketch is quite interesting - Lucy drew Gab with her staff and not her sais...

Sharon says: It looks like I was too subtle with my reference to a "crazed Kiwi woman scribbling on my web page."  Yes, Lucy did the drawings of Xena and Gabrielle.  You remember that little drawing she did that I had up before?  I thought it would be great to have a bigger one for an upcoming newsletter.  I asked her and this past Monday morning, Xena popped through the fax machine.  And, lo and behold, a Gabrielle was right behind her.  I added the drawings to newsletter #24 -- which just went in to the studio for approval You can see the drawing at http://www.creationent.com/outback/fanclubs/index.html

This is quite amusing - last year for NZ Breastfeeding awareness week, Lucy and Judah made an appearance on posters promoting the benefits of breastfeeding. This was quite popular.

This year they had something quite different - a man breastfeeding at work. <g> The man is Michael Hurst. The article says:

The Health Ministry has pulled the plug on a World Breastfeeding Week promotion featuring the bare breast of actor Michael Hurst.  Acting on the ministry's directive, Auckland-based Women's Health Action yesterday asked the Manawatu Standard newspaper not to use the image of Hurst, shirt unbuttoned, with a baby to his breast. The image invites people to consider whether it would be easier to breastfeed at work if men had to do it

Lucy Dices With Death - Sunday Star Times 29 June 2003

Lucy Lawless had her "most civilised encounter with death" when she jumped off Auckland's Sky Tower yesterday in a bid to stop child abuse. Lawless, supporting Puawaitahi, the country's first multi-agency centre to investigate and treat child abuse and neglect, did the sky jump with her daughter Daisy, 14, from one of the world's highest jumps. "It was fantastic. I wasn't going to do it because I've been sick with the flu but I got up there and I just had to," Lawless said

The following is from Sharon at Creation Entertainment:

  • Lucy and Renee: The Early Years videotapes are in house and are being mailed in the next two days. When Lucy and Renee first began appearing at our conventions, I thought it might be a good idea to videotape them -- just to be able to look back and reminisce. So, I went out and bought a camcorder. Lucy and Renee thought it was a good idea, too. And they got copies of all their conventions. When we asked if we could release that footage, they agreed. It's time to share with all the fans that weren't able to attend at the time and the newcomers who missed out. The camera is a little shaky at times and the color isn't spot on, but the excitement is all there.

THE EARLY YEARS videotape: Available from Creation Entertainment http://www.creationent.com/xena/

    NTSC - $29.95 USD
    PAL - $37.97 USD
