Beverly Hills, Calif., October 28, 2015 – Ahead of its Halloween premiere, STARZ Original series “Ash vs Evil Dead” has earned an early renewal for a second season from Starz. Strong fan, affiliate and distributor demand for the highly-anticipated premiere of “Ash vs Evil Dead" has generated the early pickup of the series which is the long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film The Evil Dead.
Executive producers and The Evil Dead original filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell will return for the second season with executive producer and showrunner Craig DiGregorio. Campbell will continue in his role as Ash Williams, the aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter. Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus”) is also returning as Ruby, a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks.

“One season isn’t enough to satisfy the fans’ two decade-long appetite for more Ash,” said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director of Starz. “The early fan and press support, along with the international broadcaster demand for more story have made it clear that the adventures of Ash Williams can’t end with season one.”

Starz recently announced global licensing deals with broadcasters and digital platforms in more than 100 countries and territories worldwide allowing “Ash vs Evil Dead” to premiere simultaneously with its network premiere in the U.S. on October 31. Broadcasters and digital providers offering “Ash vs Evil Dead” on October 31 include Amedia (Russia/CIS), C More (Scandinavia), Fox Action on Fox+ Premium service/Fox Latin America Channels (Latin America/Brazil), Sky TV (New Zealand), Stan (Australia), Starz Play Arabia (Middle East/North Africa) and Super Channel (Canada).

Starz will retain all domestic and international multiplatform rights including television, home entertainment and digital.

Best known as "Xena: Warrior Princess," actress Lucy Lawless is now starring in the new series "Ash vs Evil Dead," a spin-off from the popular "Evil Dead" horror films. On TODAY she admits that even though she was "disgusted" when she first saw the first "Evil Dead" film, "a dozen years later" she found herself married to its producer! She also counts herself as "proud" of any empowering effect her Xena character has had for women.

Comic Book Resources site has posted the news that Lucy will voice a character on the animated series “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. Lucy is joining David Tennant (yes that David of Doctor Who fame).

The site says that Lucy will have a part to play in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." The site doesn’t indicate what the character’s name will be or what episode or episodes she will be in.

Nieli was also excited to have a member of director Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" franchise on the show. "She's great, and I'm excited about her just in general," said Nieli of Lawless, who is part of the current "Ash vs. Evil Dead" TV series. "Having someone that's part of the Raimi world right now is huge. I'm a huge 'Evil Dead' person."

The odds of some "Evil Dead" references popping up in relation to Lawless' unannounced character are high, considering the references the "TMNT" team sneak into episodes. Paulsen referenced these references, dubbing them, "all the little side things that you guys throw in there very subversive, cool stuff."

The fourth season of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" debuts at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 25 on Nickelodeon.

Back from the Dead

Lucy Lawless was 17 when she first watched an Evil Dead film – and she walked out almost instantly.

“I stomped out after the first five minutes going, ‘This is sick, disgusting, misogynistic – the people who made this should be shot’,” reveals the Kiwi-born actress. “And then 10 years later I was married to one of them.”

Not only is Lucy married to Evil Dead executive producer Rob Tapert, she is also now starring in Ash Versus Evil Dead, the horror-comedy TV series sequel to the film franchise.

Her initial misgivings have dissolved and now Lucy is delighted to be a part of the cult collection.

“My husband dropped out of college with Bruce (Campbell, star of Evil Dead) and Sam (Raimi, executive producer) to make the Evil Dead movies, so it’s part of the family business,” says Lucy. “If you marry one of those guys, you kind of marry them all in a way.”

Lucy plays Ruby in the series, which was filmed in New Zealand. Bruce Campbell reprises his role as Ash, an over-confident stock boy and lothario who has to fight ‘Deadites’, or evil souls, and save mankind.

Lucy describes Ruby as a secretive figure who is the “thorn in Ash’s side”. It is a role that has required the former Xena: Warrior Princess star to perform stunt work for the first time in years.

“I always hated doing stunts but it was part of the job so you just suck it up,” says Lucy. “Now, at 47 years old, it’s like, ‘Oh that hurts’. Now I’m having to go to the chiropractor on a Sunday so I can do it all over again on Monday.”

Although Ash Versus Evil Dead may not be for the fainthearted, Lucy is proud of the show and believes the horror and comedy is superbly balanced.

“The horror is real and the humour is hilarious, so it manages to put those genres together in a really beautiful way,” she says. “It’s hard to do both of those things and both of them together is unheard of – a new type of television.”

Xenites are a loyal bunch. Here’s an example of it AND what Lucy did to make one cancer stricken fan’s heart swell. Mary E Rogers has stage 4 cancer. A group of Xenites (a gaggle of Xenites?) got together, bought a Lucy auto at Dallas Comic Con and asked Lucy to sign / personalise. What’s even better than that? Lucy gave permission for one of them to take photos of her doing it – normally you are not allowed to take photos in the auto line (we all know fans sneak in pics) but Lucy allowed this to happen. Awesome job all round!

Evil Dead” cast take the AOL Build stage to discuss the new season of their show, which appropriately premieres on October 31. The show follows Ash, a stock boy and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who spent 30 years avoiding responsibility and terrors of the Evil Dead.
