AUSXIP Charity Auction Has Ended - Tentative Total $13,383 Raised

The 2013 AUSXIP Charity Auction has ended for another year. Usually the auction brings with it a few surprises - always good but this year, it brought about a few nasty ones as well.

First let's start with the good news: This year's AUSXIP Charity Auction has raised $13,383.06 NZ$ for Starship. That is even when the site was difficult to reach (see below for the bad news about that) but people were still trying!

Top of the Lake Premieres in the US 18 March + Ep Guide

The following is from the Top of the Lake Press Kit about the series and log lines for the first two episodes to be shown on 18 March 2013 in the US on the Sundance Channel. Australian and New Zealand fans will see this on the UKTV channel on 25 March.

Lucy is in this episode (3 seconds long..see screencaps - don't blink or you will miss the scene. It's 19:16 minutes into the 1st episode outside of Bob Platt's trailer. Bob is Caroline's husband) but she will be back in Episode 4

HuffPost Green Honouring Female Environmentalists That Have Helped Defend The Planet

March is Women's History Month, and HuffPost Green is honoring female environmentalists that have helped defend the planet.

These women's accomplishments include the national ban of the pesticide DDT, the protection of primates like chimpanzees and gorillas and the fight for both oceans and forests around the globe.

From authors to advocates, actresses and explorers, these women have dedicated their lives -- and sometimes given them -- for the good of the earth.

#8 of 13: Lucy Lawless

Lucy Lawless was arrested during a Greenpeace protest after spending four days aboard an oil-drilling ship in New Zealand last year.
The actress was protesting drilling in the Arctic and was later arrested and charged with trespassing. She was sentenced in February and given 120 hours of community service and ordered to pay a fine of $547, far less than the $545,000 sought by Shell Todd Oil Services.
She called the judgment "a great victory" for environmentalists.

Lucy's Amnesty International Matchbox Art Sold For $500NZD

Lucy's contribution to the Amnesty International Matchbox Art Auction has been sold for $500 NZD.

Keeping it green, kiwi actress Lucy Lawless used a plant that survives on humid air to customise her matchbox.
Strike is an auction of Matchbox Art created by various artists, designers, musicians and more, especially for Amnesty International and featuring tiny art measuring just 5cm x 7cm created on Beehive Matchboxes.

All money raised from this sale will help fund Amnesty International’s work to protect the human all over the world

What's the first information you consume in the morning?
Emails. I read them on my iPad before I even get out of bed. It’s terrible because you’re not supposed to sleep next to anything electronic, but I don’t think I’m able to unplug.

What do you read or watch or listen to at the breakfast table?
Before the kids come down, I watch gruesome crime TV or some sort of court case that’s going on. When I found myself unexpectedly unemployed a couple of years ago, I went and sat at the high court in Auckland and would just watch trials. It’s a fascination of mine.

What occupies your mind in the car, on the subway, train or bus?
I’m very interested in green issues—mining, offshore drilling—so that occupies a lot of my mind.

Are you a TV junkie, or on an airtime-restricted diet?
I am on an airtime-restricted diet, as are all my family, but since I’m often awake at 3 and 4 in the morning, I sneak in a couple of extra hours of TV—usually on my iPad.

If you’re a couch potato, what do you watch, and how: TV, laptop or tablet?
I’m usually a latecomer. I hate to enter a new relationship with a television show, so sometimes it takes me a couple of seasons before I commit. I’m desperately waiting for Nurse Jackie to come back, and I’m about to start on the second season of Downton Abbey. That’s how I trick myself to go to the gym too—I watch Nurse Jackie on the treadmill.

Before bed, do you bite into a novel, graze on Twitter or fast until morning?
I’m trying to read a lot more; I’m reading some Frederick Forsyth at the moment. I never Twitter—I’ve tried, but I can’t figure out how to leave a message.

Which is more nutritious: print or Web?
I’m going to have to say the Web because it’s the wealth of everything in print, but more accessible.

Give us the skinny on your favorite app.
I like Houzz and Mark on Call, which is about designing space. You can put in specs, make a floor plan and add furniture and everything. I also love the Eurail timetables—if you’re in Europe, that’s an awesome app for getting around.

What’s your biggest digital indulgence?
The thing I’m most embarrassed about is how much Solebon Solitaire I play on my iPad, iPhone, whatever. It’s not even a very advanced app. There’s a game on it called La Belle Lucie, and it’s really rockingly hard.

With such a bloated media universe, how do you cut out the fat?
I think you live very well without the caffeine of social networks. It’s like a gateway drug, and it sucks up a lot of your time. I have a really rich life with real human beings, so I don’t feel like I’m suffering by not being on those things.

Jane Campion's Top of the Lake Mini-series will soon be shown on Australian, New Zealand and US TV. For Aussies and Kiwis this starts on 25 March on UKTV. For the Americans, this starts on 18 March on the Sundance Channel and on Itunes (you can buy the series for $10). Lucy is in episode 4 but the whole series looks AMAZING.

Shell’s multi-billion dollar Arctic investment lies in tatters today, and so does the company’s reputation.

Responding to today’s news that oil giant Shell have ditched plans to drill in the Arctic this year, Bunny McDiarmid, executive director of Greenpeace, said:

“Shell’s multi-billion dollar Arctic investment lies in tatters today, and so does the company’s reputation.

“They massively underestimated the challenges posed by drilling off Alaska, and pushed on regardless, determined to spark a new Arctic oil rush. The huge global movement that sprang up to oppose them started right here in New Zealand, when a small group of volunteers boarded a Shell-contracted drilling ship in Taranaki, to try and stop it heading for the Arctic.

“Shell have dropped plans to drill this year, but when they try to head to the Arctic again, the millions of people who have backed the campaign to make this beautiful and special place off-limits for oil drilling will be waiting for them.”
