Set in 17th century colonial Massachusetts—a significant time in the history of American politics, religion and society—Salem brings you the real story behind the infamous witch trials. In Salem, witches are real, and they’re behind it all.

Salem Village and Salem Town feuded over property, grazing rights and church rights. The government was dominated by Puritan leaders. People were scrutinized closely and this resulted in obvious discord. They were afraid of being persecuted for anything that may offend the Puritan mindset. The word “witch” seemed an easy and appropriate curse hurled at someone who behaved abnormally.

In WGN America’s new series Salem, we are led into a dark and mystical period of American history. In Salem, the witches are a part of day-to-day life, but they are not who or what they seem to be. Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery) is the most powerful witch of Salem. She is the wife of George Sibley (Michael Mulheren), the ailing, wealthy head of the Selectmen of Salem. Leading a double life, Mary depends on her faithful servant and friend, Tituba (Ashley Madekwe), a mysterious and ageless accomplice to carry out her agenda. Mary is ruthless, yet vulnerable; her world is torn into two when Salem’s native son, John Alden (Shane West) returns after many years at war. John and Mary were lovers before he left the Puritan town of Salem.

John, a war veteran, takes on the role of being the voice of reason in a town that is obsessed with witch hunts and unexplained phenomena. He realizes that suspicion and fear result in innocent people being victimized. On the contrary, Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel) is a well-educated local aristocrat who fans the flames of Salem’s witch hunt.

2015 AUSXIP Starship Auction Raises $25,537.52 NZD!!!

AUSXIP Starship Foundation Auction Update: my face hurts from smiling so much. The tentative total (tentative because there may be some late donations directly to Starship or people rounding up (which happens often) is in US dollars first and then the converted rate since we are converting to New Zealand dollars:

Total Amount Raised (tentatively) in USD = $19,320.03
Total Amount To Be Converted (tentatively) in NZD = $25,537.52

I'm blown away by these numbers. There are three of us in this auction team (myself, Roger and Lori) and I have to say on behalf of them - THANK YOU.
There is a lot of work involved but its worth it to see this reaction. I'm totally blown away. In the 9 years since we have been doing the auction, we have raised $136,847 for Starship. It wouldn't also be possible without Starship's support and their willingness to help us out by creating a way to make the process so easy for everyone.

So from the AUSXIP Starship Auction team,

Press Release: Lucy Lawless Joins Cast of Ash Vs Evil Dead in New Zealand

STARZ SWEETENS THE CAST OF ITS TV ADAPTATION OF CLASSIC HORROR FRANCHISE "ASH VS EVIL DEAD" WITH THE ADDITION OF LUCY LAWLESS

Original filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell Serve as Executive Producers on the Series

Beverly Hills, Calif., March 9, 2015 - Starz has announced today that Lucy Lawless ("Salem," "Spartacus") will play the role of Ruby in the STARZ original series "Ash vs Evil Dead." The series is the long-awaited follow-up to the classic horror film franchise The Evil Dead and is set to film on location in New Zealand this spring and premiere on STARZ in late 2015.

Ruby is a mysterious figure who is myopic in her quest to hunt down the source of the recent Evil outbreaks. The only problem: she believes that Ash (Bruce Campbell) is the cause of it all.

The casting reteams Lawless with executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert whom she worked with when she starred in the television series' "Xena: Warrior Princess" and "Spartacus" as well as appearing in their feature films including Raimi's Spider Man and Tapert's Boogeyman. Additional television credits include "Salem," "Parks and Recreation," "Top Of The Lake," "Flight of the Conchords," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," and "Battlestar Galactica" among others.

Lawless joins previously announced cast members Bruce Campbell (Ashley J. Williams), Ray Santiago (Pablo Simon Bolivar), Dana DeLorenzo (Kelly Maxwell) and Jill Marie Jones (Amanda Fisher).

The STARZ Original series "Ash vs Evil Dead" will be 10 half-hour episodes. Bruce Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons -personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its "Evil" grip.

Raimi will direct the first episode of "Ash vs Evil Dead" that he wrote with Ivan Raimi (Darkman, Army of Darkness,Drag Me to Hell), Craig DiGregorio ("Workaholics," "Chuck") and Tom Spezialy ("Chuck," "Reaper," "Desperate Housewives"). Raimi will also serve as executive producer, along with Rob Tapert (Evil Dead, "Spartacus," Xena: Warrior Princess") and Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, "Burn Notice") along with Craig DiGregorio ("Workaholics," "Chuck") who will serve as executive producer/showrunner. Ivan Raimi will co-executive produce and Aaron Lam ("Spartacus") will serve as producer.

Bruce Campbell Reveals Lucy Joins The Cast of Ash Vs Evil Dead

Xena is heading to the world of Deadites. In an interview with genre icon Bruce Campbell about his new game show Last Fan Standing on the ConTV streaming network, the actor revealed Lucy Lawless would be appearing in the Starz show Ash vs. Evil Dead.

After speaking with Lawless just yesterday about her recurring role on season two of WGN America's Salem, I asked the erstwhile warrior princess if she had anything to pass along to Campbell in today's talk. She jokingly said to warn him not to "screw up" or "ruin her franchise."

When I brought that warning up to Campbell, this was his response:

"Dear Ms. Lawless: Hit your marks, say your lines, or you're fired."

He then dropped the news that "she's going to be on the show."

"We just added her to our cast, and I got to tell you, I couldn't be happier. Some actors you work with and you know that you're going to fail the chemistry test. There are some that you know you won't fail it. She's great; I worked with her a lot in the Xena days, and it's great to have her on Ash vs. Evil Dead."

While he didn't reveal too much about her role on the series, Campbell said Lawless is very good at "playing extreme characters," and that's what she'll be doing on AvED as well.

When asked if he's at all worried about Lawless stealing a bit of the spotlight from him, Campbell said, "She is pretty good at stealing the spotlight, isn't she?"

"She is a beautiful woman who is very talented. I expect her to hog every one of our scenes, and I'll let her because she's Lucy Lawless; we want her to be happy on the show, and we have a very good part for her."
