Chicago Lures Lawless To Two Roles in Musical–Sunday Star Times 30 June 2013

Chicago Lures Lawless To Two Roles in Musical
Sunday Star Times 30 June 2013

LUCY LAWLESS will play two different roles in twin productions of the musical Chicago being staged 10,500km apart.

The Kiwi screen star - who earned worldwide fame and adulation for her role in Xena: Warrior Princess - has been confirmed to play the role of Velma Kelly in the Auckland Theatre Company's adaptation of the musical in November.

And next month she will play the role of Mama Morton in a three night season of Chicago at Los Angeles' world-famous Hollywood Bowl. The cast includes Anna Paquin's husband Stephen Moyer.

''I think it will be very helpful as I will be hearing the role that I will be doing later. I will be hearing other people do it,'' Lawless told the Sunday Star-Times. ''It is only like a baseline, it is not like you are learning someone else's performance because Michael's production wouldn't allow that.

''But to hear the rhythm of the dialogue, it gets in your bones and it becomes much easier.

''I am very lucky that what I am doing in July will feed into the groundwork for [the Auckland Theatre Company production].''

Hollywood A-lister Catherine Zeta-Jones was Velma Kelly in the 2002 big-screen adaptation of Chicago, and Lawless said it was ''fantastic'' to be cast in the role.

But she said her portrayal of the character, and the ATC production, would take Chicago to new levels.

''This is an entirely new [production] . . . it is cross-bred with The Sopranos. It has a much more gritty, modern sensibility, but still with all that glitz. It revels in its own tawdriness.

sundaytimes''It is about defiling all the sacred cows, that is about what this show is about. It is quite adult as well. If you want to come for the old-fashioned show, your senses are going to be rocked. It is a hardcore Chicago . . . it is a bada bing Chicago.''

Lawless flies out to America this week to prepare for that role.

She said it would be an honour to perform at the amphitheatre.

''I could not believe that they had cast Lucy from New Zealand in this iconic musical, a classical American art form, on a hallowed stage like the Hollywood Bowl and they let me [be involved],'' she said. ''I didn't dare hope it would happen, and it bloody did. I am beyond excited.''

She described musicals as being ''the height of romance''.

'''When you do musicals, every single night you are transported back to being 15 and madly in love, when anything can happen, the lights are sparkling, the music is beautiful and you are singing with someone unbelievably talented and it is like being in love for the first time.''

Lucy Sings Backup Vocals to Mark Lint’s Things We Should Do

Lucy tweeted (or retweeted) the news that she has done backup vocals to Mark Lint (from The Partially Examined Life blog) song “Things We Should Do”

The following is from Mark’s official site:

Music Blog 6/27/13: Things We Should Do. Written right now, originally with goofy lyrics, but then rewritten all serious. Featuring Lucy Lawless, Eric Schumann, Dave Roof, and Steve Petrinko. Hear the original goofy lyric version: Things You Should Do.

part of Mark’s Blog post about the song on the Partially Examined Life blog

was planning on singing the whole thing in a high, Prince-type falsetto, but then started thinking about female singers I knew that could do it instead. Back in 1994 I conceived of a whole chanteuse recording project where I would write goofy songs for some woman to sing and wrote several with names like “The Siz of Luv” and “Lust!” but never actually recorded any of them. So this was a revival of that idea, but the difference is that now I’m on friendly occasional emailing terms with Lucy Lawless, so I asked her to sing the song, she said yes, and I recorded a little video demo to send to her and started the recording.

Before I got very far into the recording, I had somewhat of a change of heart after my wife was pretty dismissive of the lyrics, and I began to feel that the music was actually good and deserved better than a parody song. So, knowing of course that I would now be partaking of the very thing I was ready to make fun of (that’s the “partially examined” thing rearing its head again), I did some soul searching and belched out a whole new, more nuanced melody with honest lyrics dealing with the constant knowledge that the person I love, not to mention I, will be checking out at some point, which is very weird. It now being no longer the song that I had pictured Lucy belting out to delightfully absurd affect, I asked if she would still be up for singing a backup vocal part, which she graciously did

Cult Shows That Deserve a Movie - Xena Warrior Princess

Lucy Lawless may currently be playing house with Ron on Parks and Recreation, but we're pretty sure Xena can still kick butt. And if Lawless isn't up to strapping on the old leather kilt again, there are a slew of young, tough actresses who could be her protégée. Kate Beckinsale or Jennifer Lawrence, perhaps? Either way, a trip to mythical Greece would be a refreshing change of pace from the vampires, werewolves and zombies that are all the rage right now

LUCY LAWLESS AND PHIL BISHOP

Image635079128426610041Back in August 2011 Lucy took part in a Greenpeace auction to raise awareness and to inform New Zealanders to protect their environment by photographing places or animals that were important to her on the environment. Lucy said she chose to capture an image of a frog because the creatures were highly sensitive to water and forest health, and crucial barometers for our environment. Lucy's frog sold for $505 but what was more important, it highlighted the need to save their habitats.

Press Release: Chicago At the Hollywood Bowl

Image635075763884310930Friday, June 21, 2013 Casting News for CHICAGO at the Hollywood Bowl

Three performances only – July 26, 27 and 28, 2013

Hollywood Bowl production to star:

SAMANTHA BARKS as VELMA
DREW CAREY as AMOS
LUCY LAWLESS as MAMA MORTON
STEPHEN MOYER as BILLY FLYNN

Directed by Brooke Shields
Conducted by Rob Fisher

Single tickets now available

June 20, 2013, Los Angeles – The Hollywood Bowl’s upcoming production of CHICAGO, the musical which holds the record as the third longest running show in Broadway history, will star Samantha Barks as Velma, Drew Carey as Amos, Lucy Lawless as Mama Morton, and Stephen Moyer as Billy.

A special announcement will be made at a later date to announce the casting of Roxie Hart.

Barks made her film debut as Éponine in the film version of the long-running musical Les Misérables. For the film, she received nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture, and Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Acting Ensemble, and won the National Board of Review Award for Best Cast and Empire Award for Best Female Newcomer.

Carey is the current host of The Price Is Right. He is also known for his television series The Drew Carey Show and Whose Line Is It Anyway? Carey previously appeared at the Hollywood Bowl as Wilbur Turnblad in the summer production of the Tony-winning musical Hairspray.

Lawless is best known for her starring roles on Spartacus and Xena: Warrior Princess, as well as her recurring roles on Battlestar Galactica and Parks and Recreation.  She made her Broadway debut in the hit revival of Grease.

Moyer currently stars in the award winning HBO series, True Blood and directed the season 6 premiere episode, which earned rave reviews and chart topping ratings. On the silver screen, his film credits include Priest, The Double, 88 Minutes and Quills. Moyer is no stranger to theater; he worked with the National Theatre of Wales, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Oxford Stage Company and the Young Vic while in England.

Brooke Shields will direct the fully staged production of CHICAGO at the Hollywood Bowl.

Shields starred in CHICAGO both on Broadway and in London’s West End and this marks her directing debut. Rob Fisher will serve as the conductor of the production. Fisher’s association with the show began with the 1996 Broadway revival and he continues to be supervising music director of CHICAGO productions around the globe.

Commenting on the announcement, Brooke Shields says, “I have a great feeling about this entire cast.  I am excited for everyone to see how brilliant Samantha Barks is on stage.  We’ve seen Stephen Moyer sing on True Blood – and that dark, sexy side of Billy will be well served by him. Drew played the Dad in Hairspray at the Bowl two years ago, and he will bring not only comedy but depth to our Amos.  I wouldn’t say no to anything Lucy Lawless ordered me to do…as “Mama” or in life!!  And let’s not forget the most exciting character … the Bowl itself!”

Rob Fisher says, “I couldn't be more thrilled about this brilliant cast for CHICAGO - a convergence of talents that will raise this great musical to new heights and send it soaring out of the Bowl.  All of them new to the piece, they each bring the necessary skills and celebrity to enliven this story in a way never seen before, and lucky for me, I'll be standing right in the middle of the glamour and the music.”

CHICAGO will have three performances at the Hollywood Bowl – Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27 at 8:00pm, and Sunday, July 28 at 7:30pm. Subscriptions and single tickets are available now for the Hollywood Bowl 2013 summer season at HollywoodBowl.com or Ticketmaster.com, or via phone at 323.850.2000 or 800.745.3000 and in person at the Hollywood Bowl Box Office. For more information, please call 323.850.2000.

CHICAGO has music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she reported on. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the "celebrity criminal."

The recent history of Broadway musicals at the Hollywood Bowl is nothing short of spectacular, including RENT (starring Vanessa Hudgens, Nicole Scherzinger, and Wayne Brady, directed by Neil Patrick Harris), HAIRSPRAY (starring Harvey Fierstein, Drew Carey, John Stamos, and Nick Jonas, directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell) and THE PRODUCERS (starring Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Richard Kind, Rebecca Romijn, and Dane Cook, directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman).

The original Broadway production opened in 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre and ran for 936 performances until 1977. Bob Fosse also choreographed the original production. CHICAGO was revived on Broadway in 1996, and a year later in the West End. The Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and is the third longest-running show in Broadway history having played more than 6,700 performances to date. The West End revival ran for nearly 15 years, becoming the longest-running American musical in West End history, and it has enjoyed several tours and international productions. The Academy Award-winning 2002 film version of the musical was directed by Rob Marshall.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and is home to the best and brightest in all genres of music. It remains one of the best deals in Los Angeles; to this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. The venue offers something for everyone, from its sizzling summer evening concerts to the daytime summer arts festival for children, “SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl,” now in its 44th season. In February 2013, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the ninth year in a row at the 24th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards. The Hollywood Bowl has become synonymous with summer in Southern California. http://www.HollywoodBowl.com

can currently be seen as “Diane,” the girlfriend of Nick Offerman’s “Ron Swanson,” on the critically acclaimed comedy Parks and Recreation. Lawless did five episodes of the show last season, and is expected to return in the fall. She was also just seen in Academy Award winning director Jane Campion’s miniseries Top of the Lake.

Before joining the hit NBC comedy, Lucy spent three years working in her homeland New Zealand on the STARZ series Spartacus. Lawless’ portrayal of the complex and often wicked “Lucretia” delighted critics and fans alike. The show broke all records for STARZ and turned the network into a top destination for original programming.

Lawless, a New Zealander, rose to international fame through her groundbreaking performance as the title character in Xena: Warrior Princess, the cult hit series also executive produced by Spartacusproducers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi. She solidified her “fan-boy cred” when she joined the critically acclaimed SyFy Channel series Battlestar Galactica as “D’Anna/Number Three.”

In addition to these roles, Lucy has continued to demonstrate her versatility with a wide range of television work….both comedy and drama…in such notable projects as Flight of the Conchords, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The L Word, CSI: Miami, Burn Notice, and The X-Files.

In film, she played “Aspen” in Adam Sandler’s Bedtime Stories, “Mother Superior” in the cult favorite Bitch Slap, a dominatrix in EuroTrip, and had cameos in Raimi’s Spider Man, and Tapert’s Boogeyman.

Lawless is a member of the board of the Starship Foundation, the fundraising body for the Starship Children’s Hospital in her hometown Auckland. She was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2004.

When you were growing up, what inspired your interest in conservation?

When I was growing up I don’t even know that I thought about it. Well you would do school trips wouldn’t you, but it would seem to be more about trees in those days. Conservation was planting trees, or the Waitaks or something, but birds were few and far between – you would hardly see them when you went out to the Waitaks, at least I don’t recall having anywhere near the impact of the kind of birdlife you see on Tiritiri.

Coming up soon on Starship's Bids for Kids Charity Auction is a autographed matchbox with a living plant named Chuy!

Lucy has autographed the matchbox inside the box while Chuy sits happily on the cover. The matchbox was originally donated by Lucy to Amnesty International auction and won by AUSXIP. The matchbox has been donated to Starship for the Bids for Kids auction to raise some money for the kids.

The plant is a grey tillandsia (follow the link to find out more about the amazing plant) and it seems, from Lucy's message below, that it doesn't require alot to keep it alive and healthy:

Looks like it needs to be spritzed with water. Needs a drink but they draw it from the air so just a spritz will perk him up. His name is Chuy. (Pronounced "Chewy")

Please be aware that if you want to bid on "Chuy", he is a living plant and if you are outside of NZ please check with Customs in your country to see what is required about importing a plant. The botanical name for "Chuy" is Grey Tillandsia

The tiny art measures just 5cm x 7cm created on Beehive Matchboxes.

All money raised from the Bids for Kids auction goes to Starship!

Aside from Chuy, the total so far that Lucy items raised in the Bids for Kids auction has been spectacular:

- Lucy's VoiceMail Message - $1520

- Argo Starship Warrior Princess - $620 (overall Argo has raised $11,980 for Starship since 2011)

What is Glastonbury?

Glastonbury Festival is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world and a template for all the festivals that have come after it. The difference is that Glastonbury has all the best aspects of being at a Festival in one astonishing bundle.

It's like going to another country, a hip and thrilling Brigadoon that appears every year or so. Coming to Glastonbury involves a fair amount of travel, and probably a queue to get in but, when you get past these impediments, you enter a huge tented city, a mini-state under canvas. British law still applies, but the rules of society are a bit different, a little bit freer. Everyone is here to have a wild time in their own way.

Starship Bids For Kids Lucy's Matchbox Art + Lucy Message

IMG083_2.jpg IMG084_2.jpg

Lucy Lawless
- 12 June 2013

Xena Episode Stills - The Debt Part 1

The Debt Part 1 is one of the best episodes from Xena. Here are more episode stills from the episode.

Xena receives a message asking her to go to the Land of Chin to “make the green dragon (a young ruler called Ming Tien) small again”. Xena wants to leave Gabrielle behind and, to explain why, recounts her years spent with the warlord Borias (who fathered Solan). The pair plan to steal from the wealthy Chinese houses - but, in doing so, Xena meets a remarkable woman. In the present day, Xena heads off on her journey alone but is captured during her assassination attempt, thanks to intervention by Gabrielle who is opposed to Xena's mission.

Wednesday, 5 June 2013, 1:44 pm
Press Release: Q Theatre

One Night with Q: A mid-year fundraising gala

On Friday 7th June, Q Theatre dresses up for the night and rolls out the red carpet to hold their first mid-year fundraising gala, to raise funds towards their development progamme Q Presents- a joint presenting venture that sees Auckland’s performing arts hotspot partner with a range of companies who are making an impact on New Zealand’s arts scene.

The fundraiser is supported by Royale Productions and some of New Zealand’s most treasured performing arts practitioners. The centrepiece is an exclusive gala performance of the acclaimed one man show ‘No Holds Bard’ by Q Theatre’s patron and Shakespeare master, Michael Hurst. Guests will have the opportunity to take part in a star-studded auction, with money can’t buy prizes, including a private performance by Michael Hurst and lunch with Lucy Lawless. The internationally acclaimed jazz virtuoso, Nathan Haines is set to play the decks while guests are wined and dined with the best from Q’s kitchens.

Q Theatre acknowledges that the arts can be a tough business when you are going it alone and they recognise the challenges involved in getting work to the stage. Q Presents encourages and supports the development of bold works by promising artists and companies who have demonstrated the determination to extend the art form in new and exciting ways. The Q Presents 2013 season includes a twisted adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Titus’ by Fractious Tash, the explosive percussion stage show ‘Elemental’ by Strike Percussion and a grim and gothic fairy tale, ‘The Pitchfork Disney’ by The Moving Theatre Company.

Q Theatre is Auckland's performing arts hotspot. Since opening in September 2011, Q has welcomed over 130,000 people through our doors to attend an eclectic and inspiring range of theatre, dance, comedy, music and everything in between. Q is a registered charity, and is proud to say that it generates 72% of its revenue from its programmes and activities. The remaining 28% comes from grants, gifts and donations.

Lucy Urges Everyone To Sign Petition To Stop Crackdown and the Destruction of Gezi Park

Right now, police forces in Turkey are using excessive violence against peaceful protesters, injuring scores of people. Only a massive public outcry will pressure PM Erdoğan to stop the crackdown.

Starship Bids For Kids Argo Auction now Live

P1000434.jpg

It's time to bid farewell to our much loved horse - Argo Starship Warrior Princess - as she is put up for auction one last time. Since 2011 when Lucy hand painted this gorgeous horse, to our frenzied "LIKE" campaign to get Starship that extra $5000 and to the other auctions; it's time to let Argo go.

Trust me when i say this horse is gorgeous; Lucy has done an incredible job with the paint job and the art. Argo has been inside and out of the elements since 2011 - she even has her own stall (and I'm not kidding). She has been well looked after.

You can now own Argo and help Starship as well. Starship's Bids for Kids Auction page is now live although the bidding won't start until 3 June (NZ Time).
