Michael Hurst and Chicago The Musical in Auckland

Image635135491516662468

The following was posted on Michael Hurst’s Official Site about the upcoming production of Chicago The Musical in Auckland from 1-24 November 2013. To catch up on all the news about the show, visit the AUSXIP Lucy Lawless Chicago The Musical Subsite

Directing Chicago, 1-24 November 2013 at Q Theatre

Michael will direct the Kander, Ebb & Fosse musical for Auckland Theatre Company, featuring Amanda Billing, Lucy Lawless,Shane Cortese, Colleen Davis, Andrew Grainger, and Sandra Rasmussen, with Will Barling, Stephen Butterworth, Mike Edward, Rebekkah Schoonbeek, Sia Trokenheim, Hannah Tasker-Poland, and Lavinia Uhila; choreography by Shona McCullagh, musical direction by John Gibson, set design by John Harding, and costume design by Leslie Burkes-Harding, and lighting design by Sean Lynch.

1920's Chicago.  Cook County Jail is home to a bawdy band of murderesses, all of whom have eradicated their quickly insignificant others.  Chanteuses Velma Kelly (Lucy Lawless) and Roxie Hart (Amanda Billing) have both acquired a spot on Death Row.  Velma enlists the help of prison matron Mama Morton (Colleen Davis) and smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn (Shane Cortese) to turn her incarceration into a media frenzy.

But, not one to rest on her laurels, Roxie comes up with a foxy plan to steal back the limelight and, instead of wrangling the law, the two divas find themselves fighting the ultimate battle - the race to superstardom.

Of the production, director Michael Hurst says, "The thing about Chicago is that underneath all the jazz and the fizz is the pulsing, wild, abandoned and desperate beating heart of a corrupt and exploitative society.  It's a dark, sexy and vicious tale, propelled by extraordinary music - the rhythms of murder and corruption; the rhythms of lust.  It's a revelatory tale of the transience of celebrity.  And it's fabulous".

ABC TV's political thriller Code goes into production

CODE, ABC TV’s new six-hour political thriller begins filming today.

Produced by Playmaker Media for ABC TV, the outstanding ensemble cast includes Dan Spielman (An Accidental Soldier, Offspring), Ashley Zuckerman (The Slap, Rush), Adam Garcia (Coyote Ugly, Bootmen), David Wenham (Answered by Fire, Killing Time), Lucy Lawless (Spartacus), Aden Young (I Frankenstein, Rectify), Chelsie Preston Crayford (Mystery of a Hansom Cab, Underbelly: Razor), Adele Perovic (SLiDE), Dan Wyllie (Rake, Puberty Blues), Aaron Pedersen (Jack Irish, City Homicide), and Paul Tassone (Underbelly).

CODE was created by Shelley Birse and written by Birse, Blake Ayshford and Justin Monjo. Directed by Shawn Seet (Mystery of a Hansom Cab, SLiDE) and produced by Playmaker’s David Maher, David Taylor and Shelley Birse, it is being executive produced by the ABC’s David Ogilvy, Greer Simpkin and Carole Sklan.

CODE, a contemporary thriller stretching from the spectacular red desert of Australia’s outback to the cool corridors of power, tells the story of two very different brothers who stumble across information about a new technology - information that people in the highest political echelons will kill to keep secret. CODE will be filmed in Sydney, Canberra and Broken Hill.

Playmaker Media’s David Taylor and David Maher said, “Shelley Birse has crafted a rollercoaster thriller with a very warm and original heart. Great writing has attracted a dream cast and crew and we're proud to be producing the series for ABC TV.”

ABC TV Head of Fiction Carole Sklan said, “The extraordinary sibling relationship at the heart of Code brings great warmth and humour to this bold and original work, which examines the power of an independent voice in a world of duplicity and danger. Having such a wonderful cast speaks volumes for the strength and complexity of the storytelling.”

Lucy Lawless Cast In New Australian Political Thriller Mini-Series “Code”

Image635130136340968616Lucy is going to be one very busy lady over the coming months. DragonCon, Parks and Recreation, Chicago The Musical and of course a new political thriller mini series to be filmed in Sydney and Canberra (Australia’s capital). The mini-series is expected to air in 2014.

For upcoming news regarding this new miniseries with Lucy, check out the AUSXIP Lucy Lawless CODE subsite

The cast includes:
Lucy Lawless, Dan Spielman, Chelsie Preston Crayford, David Wenham, Adam Garcia, Dan Wylie and Aden Young.

The following article was posted by the Canberra Times this morning:

Lucy Lawless of Xena: Warrior Princess fame, Dan Spielman from Offspring and Adam Garcia from Coyote Ugly are some of the big names starring in a political thriller to be filmed in Canberra.

David Wenham, who has starred as everyone from Faramir in The Lord of the Rings trilogy to Diver Dan in SeaChange, is also in the cast.

Chelsie Preston Crayford, who won the Logie last year for most outstanding new talent for Underbelly: Razor is also in the series.

CODE, a six-hour series for ABC TV, will start filming in Sydney on Monday. Scenes will also be shot in Broken Hill.

Filming in Canberra will start on September 2, with two weeks of the expected seven-week shoot to take place in the national capital.

Locations in Canberra include Parliament House, the Shine Dome, New Acton and Red Hill where a former embassy building will fill in as an actual embassy.

CODE is being billed as a ''contemporary thriller stretching from the spectacular red desert of Australia's outback to the cool corridors of power''.

It's the story of two very different brothers who come across a new technology that people in the highest echelons of power will kill to keep secret.

Dan Wylie, much-loved for roles in series such as Puberty Blues and Love My Way is also confirmed for the cast, as are established Aussie actors Aden Young (I, Frankenstein, Rectify) and Aaron Pedersen (Jack Irish, City Homicide)

Auditions for extras and minor speaking roles for the series were held earlier this month in Canberra.

ScreenACT is assisting in the production and CODE is also the first drama series to secure investment from the ACT Screen Investment Fund.

ScreenACT director Monica Penders said the series was ''high-octane'' and, while still political, would show a different view of Canberra, not least because it was filming in some of the recently developed areas such as New Acton.

''It's huge. I think it's the biggest drama series the ABC has ever done,'' she said. ''A significant part of it will be shot here in Canberra. It's very exciting.''

The series was created by Shelley Birse and is being produced by Playmaker Media for ABC TV.

Playmaker Media's David Taylor and David Maher said in a statement: ''Shelley Birse has crafted a roller-coaster thriller with a very warm and original heart. Great writing has attracted a dream cast and crew and we're proud to be producing the series for ABC TV.''

ABC TV's head of fiction Carole Sklan said: ''The extraordinary sibling relationship at the heart of CODE brings great warmth and humour to this bold and original work, which examines the power of an independent voice in a world of duplicity and danger. Having such a wonderful cast speaks volumes for the strength and complexity of the storytelling.''

Parks and Recreation Season 6 Lucy Semi-Regular Role as Diane Lewis

Image635129200384381601The following is from TV|Line about Lucy’s role as Diane on Parks and Recreation

On Parks and Recreation, is Ron really going to be a dad? If so, does that mean Lucy Lawless is a keeper? –Wendy

Yes, and… as far as the casual viewer will know. Show boss Mike Schur says that Lawless will appear in the season opener as well as another of the first eight episodes. And then…? “The normal thing is to grab a person for a six-episode arc, and we want to do that with her, but we’re going to spread them out over the season,” he explains. “She’s going to be the mother of Baby Swanson, so we didn’t want to grab her for four episodes and then never see her again.” So by sprinkling Diane in here and there, “We’ll really get the sense that she’s a permanent fixture in Ron’s life — which she is!”

Russia to Greenpeace “Go home, and take your Warrior Princess with you”

Image635128451973090425First it was Shell who underestimated Greenpeace and Lucy Lawless and now it’s the Russians. The following is from Alaska Dispatch 22 August 2013.

Russians say Greenpeace too thin-skinned for Arctic operations: Russia to Greenpeace: “Go home, and take your Warrior Princess with you.” The nation you can actually see from parts of western Alaska has turned back a Greenpeace ship trying to get into Russian Arctic waters, where oil and natural gas drilling is set to take place next year.  The Russians said the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise does not have a strong enough hull to operate in the Kara Sea, north of western Siberia.  Greenpeace claims its ship is tougher than many of the vessels Russia has allowed to sail into its Arctic waters.

The crew of the Arctic Sunrise wanted to shadow Russian oil giant Rosnet and Exxon Mobil’s joint drilling operation in the Arctic.  Greenpeace members, including actress Lucy Lawless – who played the title role in the 1990s mini-series, “Xena the Warrior Princess”, have repeatedly scaled drill rigs off Greenland and Northern Russia, to protest Arctic drilling.

Image635125931740978367

DragonCon weekend is going to start off with a charity Baseball game and Lucy will be calling “Play Ball” to start the game. This will also lead to a very busy weekend for Lucy at DragonCon with autograph signings, panels and Photo Ops!

The following is from Mind of the Geek site:

Dragon Con, Atlanta’s internationally known pop culture, fantasy and sci-fi convention, will be sharing its cash and colorful enthusiasm for charitable causes at several area events during its annual convention. The convention will host Dragon Con night at Turner Field, scheduled for Thursday, August 29th. The game –the Braves versus the Cleveland Indians– will be augmented all evening with Dragon Con-centered events, including a pregame on-field costume parade led by Lou Ferrigno (TV’s The Incredible Hulk), a first pitch by Liam McIntyre (Spartacus), and Lucy Lawless (Xena, Spartacus) will call “Play Ball!” to start the game.  The costume parade starts at 6:30 p.m. and the first pitch will be at 7:10 p.m. Parade participants must be at Turner Field before 6 p.m. and shuttle transportation will be provided from the Marriott Marquis starting at 4:30 p.m.

A portion of the price of each ticket will go toward Dragon Con’s three official charities – Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, Georgia Conservancy and Marcus Autism Center.   Tickets start at $7 and must be purchased from this website to support the charities: www.braves.com/dragoncon. Other charitable events hosted by Dragon Con include a charity auction, an artwork project, and a blood drive for LifeSouth. and Lucy’s tweet

What is Red Nose Day and the Comedy for Cure Kids?

Red Nose Day 2013

Fundraising efforts this Red Nose Day are directed to the Kiwi researchers to improve the health of children through research and its outcomes. Researchers are working to give children a better quality of life and a longer life while they work towards the ultimate goal – a cure. A cure for kids in New Zealand is a cure worldwide.

About Cure Kids

"The lives of all children in this country should be free from pain and illness, but the reality is too many of our children are suffering every day. Cure Kids aims to turn research into hope for the children and their families who live with illness by improving their quality of life, prolonging their life whilst fulfilling our ultimate goal of finding cures for these illnesses."
Vicki Lee, Cure Kids CEO

At Cure Kids, our purpose is simple. Every single day, we’re driven to find cures for the life-threatening illnesses that affect many of our children.

Approximately one child in 30 is affected by a genetic malformation; that’s an average of roughly one in every classroom. We’re searching for cures for, among others, childhood leukemia and other cancers, heart diseases, cystic fibrosis, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Type 1 diabetes and asthma. These conditions and diseases mean children often miss out on a normal childhood and have to learn far too early in life how to fight to survive.

DSC08534From Xena to Velma: Lucy Lawless for Auckland Chicago
August 2013

After playing Mama Morton in the Hollywood Bowl season of Chicago, Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess, Battlestar Galactica, Spartacus: Blood and Sand) is on her way home to New Zealand kick up her heels as the murderous chanteuse, Velma Kelly, in Auckland Theatre Company’s Chicago, opening on 2 November, 2013.

Auckland Theatre Company's 2013 season ends with a BANG, as Chicago, directed by Michael Hurst and starring Lucy Lawless, Amanda Billing and Shane Cortese, opens at Q Theatre.

1920s, Chicago.

Of the production, Director Michael Hurst said, "The thing about Chicago is that it underneath all the jazz and the fizz is the pulsing, wild, abandoned and desperate beating heart of a corrupt and exploitative society. It's a dark, sexy and vicious tale, propelled by extraordinary music - the rhythms of murder and corruption; the rhythms of lust. It's a revelatory tale of the transience of celebrity. And it's fabulous."

Auckland Theatre Company Artistic Director, Colin McColl, said, "The longest-running American musical ever to play the West End, Chicago has garnered a stash of glitzy awards in many revivals worldwide. Michael's production stars the hottest cast of the year including Lucy Lawless, fresh from her role as Mama Morton in Chicago at the Hollywood Bowl alongside Brooke Shields, Stephen Moyer and Ashlee Simpson."

And when the doors are closed, it’s too late. In order for StarJam to keep helping young people with disabilities, we need you to swing into action. Our goal is to raise NZ$100,000 (approx US$80,000) during the month of August 2013. This will enable 50 kids with disabilities to take part in StarJam for a whole year.

How Xena Plans To Rise From The Dead - Xena Movie Resurrection News 04 August 2013

The following article is from the New Zealand Sunday News (Print Edition) (04 August 2013) on a possible Xena Resurrection. Lucy tweeted back in May 2013 that there was a possibility that Xena may be back:

Had an interesting call from a chap who wants to re-invigorate the #Xena brand. You guys may have started something. -- Lucy Lawless (@RealLucyLawless) May 23, 2013

But there's a lot of red tape around #XWP so don't get your knickers in a twist. It may come back in a different form. -- Lucy Lawless (@RealLucyLawless) May 23, 2013

LAWLESS GETS HER HEAD TOGETHER TO REVIVE SMASH HIT ROLE

How Xena Will Rise From Dead
Sunday News (New Zealand) 04 August 2013

TV bosses in the United States are rumoured to be considering bringing back the cult show that turned Lucy Lawless into a worldwide pin-up and feminist icon.

And the Kiwi lead star knows how Xena: Warrior Princess Part 2 should kick off.

The original series ran for six years and 134 episodes until June 18, 2001. In the shock finale, Xena was slain and decapitated.

"The fans were always devastated that we cut Xena's head off. We thought we were telling a strong storyline and it was hilarious, but it broke their hearts," Lawless said.

With a possible relaunch in the air, she has mentally scripted a series-opening plot. "In my dreams it would be that Renee [O'Connor, who played Gabrielle] and I, and Ted [Raimi], who played Joxer, would come back and basically stick Xena's head back on her and go on a quest," Lawless said. "At the end you introduce this new Warrior Princess, hand it over and let them run with it. So we could put the family back together, give the fans what they want, reinvigorate the brand and hand it on to a new generation."

Lawless is amazed by the continued dedication of her fans. "They will show up wherever you go, which is lovely because people are more inclined to cast you - that is how it works in our business - that is currency.

"If you stick with the fans, Dave Dobbyn taught me, they will stick with you. You would be nothing without your fans."

Lucy Lawless may be adored by millions as the kick-ass heroine Xena, but the Kiwi screen queen was delighted to perform for a much smaller group of fans - residents of an Auckland rest home who she entertained as part of a court sentence.

In February, Lawless was sentenced to 120 hours' community work after having earlier pleaded guilty to illegally boarding an oil ship in Taranaki as part of an anti-mining demonstration in February 2012.

She has served her "time" by performing at the rest home, including in its dementia ward. "When you make a whole room of people who seem catatonic laugh or do their exercises . . . it was awesome. I loved it, it was like the best job I ever had. I do interpretive dance. All the nurses and helpers would goad me to be the class clown.

"The residents like some fresh energy coming in. I'd wear coloured pants and have flowers in my hair so they would have something daffy to look at."

Lawless continued to entertain residents after completing her community work. "It was an utter privilege and I remain in contact. I have a lot of friends there. I go back all the time."

She also welcomed residents to her family's Auckland home last month. "Instead of going around Cornwall Park in the rain it is better that they come [to my house] and have a cup of tea."

Lawless said the venue for her community work had opened up her eyes, and heart, to the plight of people affected by dementia.

"These are very accomplished people. They have all been somebody in their lives. But because of their immobility, they are not even able to probably go to their own children's homes because there are stairs. They can only do little outings."

She hoped others would follow her lead and visit local rest homes.

"If you have a few hours to kill every week, and you don't know what to do with yourself, go and visit. They are always up for it and it is so fun.

"These are young people in old bodies. They are delightful."

The Celebrity Cause Celebre–Herald on Sunday 4 August 2013

heraldonsunday040813The New Zealand Herald on Sunday 4 August 2013 has a brief mention of when celebrities add their names to various worthwhile causes, the fans and the media pay attention. They used the photo of Lucy onboard the Noble Discoverer during the Save the Arctic protest in 24-27 February 2012 to highlight the brief article.

Here are two press releases that have been archived on the AUSXIP Lucy Lawless Save The Arctic Support Page – click here for more news/multimedia about the occupying of the Noble Discoverer in Feb 2012.

LUCY LAWLESS OCCUPIES ARCTIC DRILLING SHIP

Auckland, 24 February 2012 ? At 7am this morning actor Lucy Lawless joined Greenpeace New Zealand activists in stopping a Shell-contracted drillship from departing the port of Taranaki for the remote Arctic, where its exploratory oil drilling programme threatens to devastate the Alaskan coastline.
The Noble Discoverer is due to depart on a 6,000 nautical mile journey to drill three exploratory oil wells in the Chukchi Sea off the coast of Alaska.

Six Greenpeace New Zealand activists, along with Lawless, famous for her roles in Xena: Warrior Princess and Spartacus, have boarded the vessel, scaled its 53 metre drilling derrick and are in the process of hanging banners from its summit, reading "Stop Shell" and "#SaveTheArctic." They are equipped with survival gear and enough supplies to last for several days.
"I'm here today acting on behalf of the planet and my children," said Lawless. "Deep-sea oil drilling is bad enough, but venturing into the Arctic, one of the most magical places on the planet, is going too far. I don't want my kids to grow up in a world without these extraordinary places intact or where we ruin the habitat of polar bears for the last drops of oil."
She continued, "To see the melting of the sea ice not as a warning to humanity but as an invitation to drill for more of the stuff that caused the problem in the first place is the definition of madness. What Shell is doing is climate change-profiteering."

Shell is the first major international oil company to make the exploitation of the Arctic a key part of their strategy. If the Noble Discoverer strikes oil this summer, other global oil giants may quickly follow, sparking an Arctic oil rush.

The Arctic's extreme weather conditions and short summer season means Shell has a limited window for drilling new exploratory wells before the return of winter sea ice. Freezing temperatures, unpredictable weather and remote drilling locations pose unprecedented challenges, making an oil spill impossible to contain and clean up (1).

According to a senior official at a Canadian firm that specialises in responding to oil spills, "there is really no solution or method today that we're aware of that can actually recover [spilled] oil from the Arctic"

Total estimated Arctic oil reserves would satisfy just three years of current global oil demand, but would both contribute significantly to carbon emissions, and pose a grave risk to the local eco-system

"A large scale oil spill would devastate the fragile frozen Arctic world and hindered by ice, darkness and fierce winds, a clean up would be impossible," said Greenpeace New Zealand Climate Campaigner Steve Abel, "Where oil production happens, spills happen, it is not a matter of if but when."

He continued, "There is no more striking an emblem of the madness of oil expansion than the struggle for the Arctic. We must draw a line in the ice and stop Shell and the oil industry from ruining these last unspoiled ends of the Earth, and transition to the clean energy sources that can power our world without cooking it."

Earlier this week, the Department of Interior's Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement approved Shell's Oil Spill Response Plan for the Chukchi Sea (4). The plan included devices for cleaning up a spill ? including capping and containment systems and ice deflection barriers ? that Shell admits have never been properly tested except in laboratories or on paper.

and when they finally came down 77 hours later:

PRESS RELEASE FROM GREENPEACE:
Activists, actor Lucy Lawless arrested for Shell Arctic drillship occupation

Auckland, February 27th 2012 -- The occupation of an Arctic-bound Shell drillship by six Greenpeace activists including actor Lucy Lawless ended this morning after police climbed the ship's drilling tower and arrested the group. The protest was into its fourth day and the activists had spent 77 hours on top of the 53 metre drilling tower.

"This chapter has ended, but the story of the battle to save the Arctic has just begun," said Lucy Lawless, before being arrested. "Seven of us climbed up that drillship to stop Arctic drilling, but 133,000 of us came down."

She continued, "We will continue to stand in solidarity with the communities and species that depend on the Arctic for their very lives until Shell cancels its plans to drill in this magical world, and makes the switch to clean, sustainable energy."
The activists entered the Port of Taranaki at 6:30 a.m. on February 24th, scaled the drilling tower of the Shell drillship the Noble Discoverer and set up camp. The ship was preparing to leave for the Chukchi Sea off the coast of Alaska where it is scheduled to drill three exploratory oil wells this summer.

"In these four days we have shone a global spotlight on Shell's reckless plans to destroy the precious wild Arctic for just a few years of oil," said Viv Hadlow, one of the drillship activists.

She continued, "It's insane that oil companies like Shell regard the melting of the Arctic sea ice not as a warning to humanity, but as a chance to drill for more of the oil that caused the problem in the first place. Today this occupation ended, but like the hundreds of thousands of people who have joined our cry to save the Arctic, we will not be silenced."

Over the course of the four day occupation, more than 130,000 people sent an email to Shell executives telling them to cancel their plans to drill in the Arctic, causing Shell email systems to overload repeatedly. Thousands of people around the world also sent messages of support to Lucy and the activists via social media and the hashtag #SaveTheArctic, which featured on banners hung from the drillship, has trended on and off around the world over the past 4 days. Celebrities like Jared Leto and the official Beatles twitter account also posted messages to their followers.

"I can't wait to get home to my kids to tell them all about this amazing journey, but I'm so glad I took part in this peaceful action," said Lucy Lawless.
She continued, "I am in awe of the multitudes of people who have sent us so many inspiring messages of support, not to mention my fellow activists who put their personal liberties on the line to stand up to Shell's mad plans to drill in the Arctic.

"We did what we came to do. Together we sent a clear message that has been heard and echoed across the globe: there's no place in this world for your reckless Arctic oil."

Shell is the first major international oil company to make exploitation of the Arctic a major focus. If the Noble Discoverer strikes oil this summer, other global oil giants will quickly follow and spark an Arctic oil rush. The company has a very tight window in which to drill for oil. Freezing temperatures, extreme weather conditions and a highly remote location pose unprecedented challenges, and make an Arctic oil spill virtually impossible to contain and clean up. (1) According to a senior official at a Canadian firm that specialises in oil-spill response, "there is really no solution or method today that we're aware of that can actually recover [spilled] oil from the Arctic." (2)
Total estimated Arctic oil reserves would satisfy just three years of current global oil demand, but would both contribute significantly to carbon emissions and pose a grave risk to the local ecosystem. (3) Numerous reports show that through energy efficiency and clean energy, global energy needs can be met while leaving the Arctic untouched. (4)
