Lucy Lawless remains a warrior in The Code on ABC TV

WHETHER it’s swinging sword as warrior princess Xena, scheming as the wicked Lucretia in Spartacus, or climbing atop an oil drilling ship and getting herself arrested, Lucy Lawless is formidable in a fight.

And in her role of remote indigenous school teacher Alex Wisham in new political thriller, The Code, 46-year-old Lucy Lawless is again a force to be reckoned with.

The Auckland-born actress rose to international fame as the title character in Xena: The Warrior Princess from 1995 to 2001.

Lawless spun that renown into roles including Battlestar Galactica and Spartacus, and re-embraced comedy as Diana in acclaimed US comedy Parks and Recreation, and offbeat NZ hit Flight of the Conchords.

Until The Code, Lawless, as irreverent as she is enthusiastic, had never accepted an acting gig ‘across the ditch’.

“It’s my first role in Australia. I saw some great writing and grabbed it,” she says.
