Lucy Lawless War Veteran - Veja Magazine Translation April 2011

The following article (In Portuguese and English translation by Leila) is from a Brazillian magazine called Veja. is about Lucy's role on Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. It also covers her work on Xena. The scan was contributed by Wladimir. The translation is by Leila.

BLOOD AND SEX

Lucy as Lucretia (in blue dress): a feisty Roman lady

War veteran

Lucy Lawless, the actress who played the brawny Xena, keeps on loving women in Spartacus.  And she's even bolder now.

Owner of a gladiator academy in the times of the Roman Empire, Batiatus (John Hannah) falls into a rival's trap.  While his bloody face is shown in close up, the camera catches his wife in another type of combat: she is making love with a (girl)friend.   As early as the first episode of the new Spartacus season, which starts this coming Saturday, April 16, on the Globosat HD channel, there is no doubt left: the cunning Lucretia plays in all teams. Such versatility helps maintain the myth surrounding the actress who plays the role, the New Zealander Lucy Lawless. Between 1995 and 2001, that powerfully built woman of 1,77m reached fame portraying the main character of another trash series, Xena, Warrior Princess.  The exchange of caresses with her sidekick, Gabrielle (Renée O 'Connor), led Xena to be worshiped by lesbians.  Swords in their hands, the (lady)fans started gathering at conventions, such as the XenaCon - which the actress supports with her presence until this day. "At the beginning, there was no intention to portray them as lesbians.  But they got so famous that we decided to follow with that idea", Lucy told VEJA.

At 43, mother of three, the actress boasts a beautiful figure, as can be ascertained in Spartacus wanton scenes - inserted between numerous blood spilling ones.  And she is a very lucky woman.  In the 90's, the ex- Miss New Zealand got a secondary role in another series made by the same producers of Xena, and was so good at it that she ended by getting the job of their first option for the warrior woman role. In Spartacus, the central character was, like the title says, the gladiator who led a revolt in the year I BC, in Rome.  But by the middle of the first season, the Welsh actor Andy Whitfield, who played Spartacus, was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer.  The way to deal with his absence was to create Gods of the Arena, a prologue to the original season, which shows how Batiatus, helped by Lucretia, secured his academy reputation. As Whitfield's condition recrudesced - and with Batiatus' death at the end of the first year - it seems that Lucretia will be the big star of Spartacus new season.  A detail: she seemed to have died during the same scene where her husband was beheaded.  Lucy makes fun of the rumors that her character will be resuscitated only because her husband in real life is Robert Tapert, one of the executive producers:  "If the character was not good, he wouldn't have any qualms about leaving me unemployed".

Despite the evidences in contrary, Lucy makes it clear that Lucretia's sexual interest falls on men.  "She doesn't have sex with women for pleasure.  It's just a means of strengthening her power", the actress explains. Lucy, by the way, says that she never had any attraction for women. Not even platonically, like Xena and Gabrielle? "And who said their relationship was platonic? It was pure fire", she quips.

Lawless back in prequel to 'Spartacus' - Otago Daily Times 26 April 2011

New Zealand's Otago Daily Times (Online version) newspaper has an article that appears to be very dated but they have just posted it. It's regarding Gods of the Arena but it mentions Liam's signing as Spartacus for Season 2 as only the previous week. As we know, Season 2 is currently being filmed in Auckland.

Image

Lawless back in prequel to 'Spartacus'
Otago Daily Times 26 April 2011

Some interesting snippets:

The prequel grew out of a flashback sequence that was originally going to occur early on in season two to flesh out some of the characters, exploring Batiatus' gladiatorial school. It also sees the rise of a new gladiator, the cocky Gannicus. And there will be much more of Lucretia.

"It's true, you're going to see a lot more of Lucretia, but not just nakedness," Lawless said.

"People are going to be surprised by the relationship between Lucretia and Batiatus... Every decision she makes is out of her love and duty to Batiatus."

She said that while the prequel may have been born out of a need to kill time, no time is wasted.

"There is no foot-dragging in this prequel. We really go at it full-tilt," she said.

A New Battle Plan For Spartacus - Lucy Talks About Lucretia 17 April 2011

ImageHerald on Sunday (New Zealand)
17 April 2011

A New Battle Plan For Spartacus

The article is about Spartacus Gods of the Arene coming to New Zealand television:

A new battle plan for Spartacus

ROME WASN’T built in a day, but Spartacus: Gods of the Arena came damn close. This is the programme quickly greenlit last year after Season 2 of Spartacus: Blood and Sand had to be put on hold when leading man Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with cancer.

Lucy Mentions:

Gods will flash back to earlier times when social climbers Batiatus and wife Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) get their first taste of fame by acquiring a superstar gladiator called Gannicus (Dustin Clare). He intends to become Champion of Capua, a title later taken by Spartacus.

Lawless is most certainly a survivor, even though Lucretia seemingly died in the Blood finale with a sword to her pregnant abdomen. “This role is the greatest challenge and pleasure of my career, so I’m grateful I escaped my fate,” says Lawless, who shot Lucretia’s demise two ways — one in which she’s clearly dead, one in which she’s still twitching. Execs chose the latter, assuring she’ll be back for Season 2.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. In Gods, the popular actress engages in some sizzling Sapphic sex with costar Jaime Murray ( Dexter), who plays Lucretia’s girlhood pal Gaia — and that’s something Lawless’ fans have been dying to see since the star’s days as Xena: Warrior Princess.

“The lesbian stuff made me nervous as hell, and I don’t think I could have done it without Jaime,” Lawless admits. “She’s really funny and 200 per cent professional.”

And Whitfield, who is undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, remains her kind of man. “Andy didn’t curl up in a ball and think of himself — he’s concerned about all the people making their livelihood with this show,” says Lawless. “He wanted us to continue and we love him for that. It’s no wonder he played Spartacus so well. The guy is a true hero.”

There is a full page article in this morning's Herald on Sunday 17 April 2011 about Lucy's active role in putting her money where her mouth is. Sometimes actors are involved in causes or campaigns that they don't fully support (and their actions later prove it) but from the looks of what the Herald on Sunday reports, Lucy is once again proving how genuine a person she is; she is actively converting her property in ecosmart way; not just saying it but doing it. Good for Lucy and Rob for taking this action. As with her tireless support of Starship, her passion for the environment also shines.

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – 22 NOVEMBER 1998 Xena star Lucy Lawless presents the trophy for the World Cup of Golf at Gulf Harbour Country Club, Whangaparoa Peninsula, to England’s Nick Faldo and David Carter.

There is a funny story attached to this clip. I was channel surfing and saw Lucy quite by accident. I fumbled quickly to put a tape in to record. Apologies for the atrocious sound quality. The tape was old (it was old and ready to be tossed before I used it for this clip). Lucy doesn’t say anything other than presenting the award.

The Warrior Profile on Lucy Lawless Backstage Magazine 17-23 Feb 2011

ImageBackstage Magazine has a profile of Lucy called "The Warrior"

"Xena" star Lucy Lawless steps back into the sandals for Spartacus.

Lucy Lawless doesn't mind being typecast. The actor, who became a household name thanks to the 1995-2001 TV series "Xena: Warrior Princess" and who can currently be seen on Starz's "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," admits that playing Xena may have pigeonholed her into repeatedly being cast as the warrior in period pieces. But, the New Zealand-born Lawless notes, "What am I going to complain about? How many actresses work as much as me?"

Lucy Lawless Interview Lesbian News Vol 28, Number 6 January 2003

ImageLesbian News Vol 28, Number 6 January 2003

Lucy Lawless - In an exclusive interview the actress talks about life after Xena, love, and her lesbian fans

For six long years, lesbians around the nation looked to any clue that theirs was a lesbian relationship. They teased us when they gazed lovingly, even longingly into each other's eyes. They teased us even they gently and tenderly embraced. They teased us when they talked so devotedly about each other. When we thought we could finally prove that, yes, they are lesbians, we ran to the Internet to pore over the latest evidence with similarly devoted fans....

Tig Notaro Xena, Joan Jett and Me Lucy Mention 12 April 2011

Image

Comedian Tig Notaro is interviewed and she has a Lucy mention:

Queer comedian Tig Notaro has an impressive lesbian pedigree away from her stand-up career.  She's filmed scenes for the recent biopic on grrl group the Runaways, guest starred in episodes of The Sarah Silverman Program as the one woman alluring enough to turn Silverman gay, and before her stage and screen appearances, she worked as an assistant on Xena: Warrior Princess.

As for her time as a somewhat hapless assistant on Xena, Notaro said she formed a close bond with the woman who played the dykonic superhero herself, Lucy Lawless.

"Lucy is great -- always so supportive. She would go see me do comedy when I was just starting out at little shows and open mics. She and I are still good friends and see each other whenever she's in the States and we both have time. Which is basically never, so I guess I should take all that back."

ReLaunch - Lucy Lawless The Vagina Monologues Subsite

Image

After being absent for a few years from AUSXIP, the AUSXIP Lucy Lawless subsite for The Vagina Monologues is back!

Added reviews, press, pics and a video from TV3 News (apologies in advance for the very bad quality...digitised it back in 2002 at very low res in rm format).

ImageThe Vagina Monlogues reveals a series of different women's stories and experiences involving their genitalia. The piece was born when playwright Ensler realized that her work, mostly about women, was missing a physiological connection. Ensler told PBOL,"I couldn't be thinking about [liberating women] without thinking about vaginas. I wanted to know about what women were feeling about their vaginas. As I talked to women, I was so awed and amazed by what people were telling me that I began to think, 'there's a [theatre] piece here.'" quote is from Playbill

Lucy in Funny Business Perfume Spoof - A Little Naughty

fb.pngNZ On Screen has 5 clips from the Funny Business DVD - Funny Business was a tshow show with a very Kiwi twist to it. It was quite a funny show. Lucy made her debut on that show and there are some absolute fantastic skits. The Lucy featured skit is a little on the naughty side (but very tame).

A selection of sketches from this award-winning skit based comedy series featuring Willy de Witt, Ian Harcourt, Peter Murphy and Dean Butler (with occasional animation by Chris Knox). The Hoons display their all of their charm and tact at the beach -- but cruising for action (in a car truly worthy of them) results in a heated confrontation with one of their rivals. The classic Norman the Mormon also features, alternative Dunedin bands of the 1980s are lampooned and Lucy Lawless makes her TV debut in an ad spoof that anticipates her future role in Spartacus.

Season 1 Episode 20: NO ORDINARY BEGINNING

Credits | Episode StillsScreencapturesVideo

The mysterious Mrs. X kidnaps JJ for his super brain while George is imprisoned on a doomed plane. Meanwhile, the Watcher and Katie reunite, and Jim and Stephanie turn to King for help finding their son.

The Powells must join together to save JJ, who’s been kidnapped, courtesy of Mrs. X and forced to solve an enigma that could lead to the permanence of the trilsettum’s effects. Eventually, the other Powells are captured as well while trying to save him from a secret GlobalTech facility. While they were in an elevator, Mrs. X drugged them. Steph and Daphne wake up together. JJ and Mrs. X walk in. She points a gun at Daphne, forcing JJ to tell Mrs. X how to get the serum to last permanently. Once Mrs. X finds out how, she orders the guards to shoot all of them.

George follows Victoria to a plane where Mrs. X and 80 criminals are being loaded into the plane. A guard catches George, and loads him on the plane. During the flight, the plane is deliberately set to crash, and in the ensuing events the 80 criminals survive the crash and become super villains.

Xena - Top 10 Most Magical Princesses Ever!

Image

With the royal wedding craze sweeping the globe, we've got princesses on the brain. So watch out, Kate Middleton, because you're not the only game in town. After all, there were plenty of Hollywood princesses holding it down on the big (and small) screen long before Will confessed that he hearts Kate.

6. Xena

She's not your everday royalty, but when you're a badass fighter seeking redemption like Lucy Lawless in Xena: Warrior Princess does it really matter?

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena on The Box in New Zealand 01 May 2011

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, the highly anticipated prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, telling the story of the original Champion of the House of Batiatus, will premiere on The BOX on Sunday, 1 May at 9.30pm.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand, the first season in the Spartacus series franchise, one of the highest rating series on pay television in the United States, quickly became an audience favourite with BOX viewers when it premiered in New Zealand last year.

The prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, was watched by over 2.8 million viewers when it premiered in the US earlier this year and now the powerful series, complete with an irresistible cast, is set to confront Kiwi audiences.

The series follows the character Gannicus (Dustin Clare, Underbelly), the first gladiator to become Champion of Capua. Cast members and characters being reprised from the original series include John Hannah (The Mummy, Four Weddings and A Funeral) as Batiatus, Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) as Lucretia, Peter Mensah (300, The Incredible Hulk) as Oenomaus, and Manu Bennett (30 Days of Night, Street Legal) as Crixus.

Joining returning stars will be additional cast members Jaime Murray (Hu$tle) as Gaia, Marisa Ramirez (General Hospital) as Melitta and Temuera Morrison (Star Wars, Once Were Warriors) as Doctore.

"It's exciting to bring another exhilarating season of our top show of 2010 to viewers next month," says The BOX Channel Manager, Tom Fox.

"Fans of Spartacus: Blood And Sand will not be disappointed as this series is as passionate and brutal as its sequel".

Filmed in New Zealand, the production team includes Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Legend of the Seeker), Rob Tapert (Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Legend of the Seeker), Joshua Donen (Drag Me to Hell) and Steven S DeKnight (Smallville, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena screens Sundays, 9.30pm from 1 May on The BOX, SKY Channel 005.

Message From Lucy About Her Birthday and the AUSXIP Charity Auction!

Here's a new message from Lucy about her birthday and the AUSXIP Charity Auction which is held in March in time for Lucy's birthday! Thanks to everyone we have raised $9600 for Starship this year! Unbelievable.

thank-you everyone for your kindness and best wishes on my birthday.
I never truly understood that the online auction was a birthday present to me. I was extremely blown away when I got it for the first time! I was quite mute.

Thank-you all (especially Mary D) who organised it. The Starship people are going to be shocked and delighted. I know that will buy some incredible piece of equipment that will help heal a child or ease suffering. You are very generous and I send warm blessings on you all from afar. ( I just took a few minutes out to pray in your direction!)

I had a lovely, lovely birthday. When work was unexpectedly postponed, I caught up with Madeleine Sami and Ladyhawke for brunch at Alleluia Cafe on K Rd and then went out to play tennis very badly with pals in Mt Eden. The rest of the day was spent with my family. My sister made the most gorgeous lemon cake I have ever seen and which we devoured over two days. Thanks, Jos!

Now I have to get back to work. on Sparty. My internet has been down so I have been trying to do research on my little iPhone. Not very good. I am so excited by the new direction for my character. Bizarre stuff! Michael Hurst and I are psyched about what we're about to do. Wish I could say what, but it would ruin the surprise.
Up and at 'em!
Lucy

Xena: Warrior Princess The Sunday Times Reviews The Debt Part 2

The Debt Part 2 is one of my all time favourite episodes. Lucy was INCREDIBLE in this episode. The reviewer from The Sunday Times in Perth agrees!

The picture used is, of course, after Gabrielle slaps Xena and a silent tear tracks down Xena's cheek. That scene was just so incredibly powerful and Lucy's acting was just superb. If you are a new fan and haven't seen The Debt Part 2 yet, go and see it. It's one of the best episodes of the entire show.

The Debt Part 2
Xena (Lucy Lawless) narrowly escapes execution for attempting to kill the ruthless young Emperor Ming T'ien (Daniel Sing) and finally repays the debt she owes her spiritual mentor, Lao Ma (Jacqueline Kim).

Bare for Christchurch and Great Mates! Woohoo!

Image

Lucy's Bare For Christchurch T-shirt Update...

The t-shirt has been sold and it's gone for $120 Kiwi dollars. The money has gone to Christchurch and every dollar is most welcome! Now to the part that was really fun.

What do you do when two mates band together and surprise you with this shirt? Well I know what I would do since it's happened to me. I was gobsmacked and quite touched that these two did something so special.

These two munchkins (names beginning with R & J and one of them was at the BARE event...guess who and it's not Janine) put their heads together and came up with the plan to let me stress over this shirt (I was bidding on it). So kind of them <g> Just when as I was refreshing the auction page and hoping my internet connection won't go down (it seems to dislike trademe), J sprung the surprise on me :)

It's all for a great cause (other than me owning it for a few months). The shirt will be available for the next AUSXIP Charity Auction!

So that's my night :) Bloody good mates, aye? Absolutely.

Lucy in Bare For Christchurch - One More Photo

Image The following pic and info was posted on the Official BARE for Christchurch page (very cool of the friend to do this)

Brilliant! Surprised my good friend Pauline from Chch with tickets to Bare. The chance to escape the trauma and aftershocks to be part of the audience was very special for both of us. We were utterly blown away by the compassion and generosity of all involved in the production. Special thanks to Lucy Lawless, Monty Betham, Logan Swann and Annie Whittle for the kindness you shared towards Pauline. You played a massive part in raising her spirit ... thank you so much!

We're talking to Lucy Lawless, Xena the Warrior Princess, and then later she was catapulted to superstardom by appearing on the Jack E. Jett TV Show, which is airing in New Zealand now. Have you noticed that, Lucy? That you guys spring-boarded my career? Yeah. I'll forever be grateful. Thanks, man. Well, I do what I can do. How's Daisy doing? [her child by Garth Lawless who appeared on the TV show with Lucy] Daisy is doing great. She's following in your footsteps also, with a career in radio and in voice. I bet mom is proud...
