The Flick Cast Reviews Spartacus Panel

ImageSDCC10: ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ Panel, Andy Whitfield Talks Prequel, Season 2 Details

It’s no secret that some of us here at The Flickcast are huge Spartacus: Blood and Sand fans, having written about the Starz show during it’s premiere season, covering Andy Whitfield’s battle with a treatable form of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, as well as Starz’ decision to film a 6- episode prequel to buy some time for Andy to recover.

So when Starz announced there would be a SDCC 2010 panel featuring Andy Whitfield and the cast and producers, we knew we’d be there to cover all of the Comic-Con exclusive news and trailers.

Lucy's Voice on American Dad

Seth MacFarlane was at Comic Con and revealed that in an upcoming episode of the animated show American Dad, Lucy's voice will be featured. Read about the panel below:

Inside the twisted mind of 'American Dad'

Seth MacFarlane, also known as Fox's king of animation, was back at Comic-Con on Sunday to promote his other family drama, "American Dad." He previewed the upcoming (and very gory) Christmas episode, but instead of showing the show the way it will look on TV, the first few minutes were shown in raw, black and white form.

The panel gave up some news:

Upcoming guest voices will include Ed Asner, Lucy Lawless , Hayden Panettiere, Shannon Sharpe, and many, many more.Read More

Comic Con Lucy Press Video Interview

Maureen from the Chicago Tribune has a Lucy interview up on her YouTube video channel. It appears to be a press interview.

Nothing new in the interview (other than what was actually said on the panel about Lucretia not being dead, coming back better in Season 2,
Lucretia's past being explored in the prequel). Lucy looking fab as usual.

Spartacus Cast Fan Video Chat From Comic Con - Screencaps & Recap

ImageThe video chat was so much fun with Lucy, Andy, John, Viva, Steven and surprise guest Jai! Here's a brief recap of what was discussed.

Click here to view screencaptures of the chat

1. Lucretia does survive and make it into Season 2 (I think we all knew this since Lucy spilled the beans some time ago)

2. One of the new cast members Marisa Ramirez is going to be Oenomaus' (Doctore) wife and her name is Melitta and she also is Lucretia's body slave.

3. Season 2 will see a much more tougher Lucretia and none too nice; Ilithyia and Lucretia will be forced to work together but from how Lucy described Lucretia, you get the feeling she will be out for Roman blood herself.

4. Jai Courtney made a surprise visit without his blond locks but now brown. Still cute.

5. Andy is looking very well although IMO a little skinny.

6. Lucy wants to cop a feel of John (those two are just cool together)

7. Andy wouldn't mind playing Bond or acting in a romantic comedy.

8. They talked about Katrina's role of Mira and how they interracted with Spartacus. Steven mentioned that Mira had never been loved so that's all she wanted from Spartacus (awww).

9. There will be some behind the scenes and deleted scenes in the DVD/Blu-Ray which is coming out in September

There will be photos and video from the panel going up later tonight (as soon as Lori can send them to me...let's hope the hotel connection is good).

Spartacus Prequel News from The Panel

Latest news (from the Panel Tweets by Spartacus_Starz and Moryan) about the prequel.

  • Andy will be seen in the first episode and the last episode of the Prequel
  • John Hannah says producers had considered 2-3 flashback eps to Batiatus' ludus even before Andy's illness. There was a chance to expand
  • Oenomaus wife, Batiatus father -- "Instead of telling you about that in S2 we will show it to you in the prequel" EP Stephen S. DeKnight 5 minutes
  • Lucy on the Prequel "we don't ease into the action, it starts of pretty hot, you fans will like it. All the blood and gore you can handle"
  • Varro not coming back for prequel. They wanted to find a way to bring him in but just could not.
  • We'll see "quite a bit" of Doctore in prequel. He plays major role, DeKnight said. Cool, cuz Oenomaus/PeterMensah is awesome.

Lucy Lawless Teases Michael Ausiello

Following yesterday's news item from Michael Ausiello that he will be interviewing Lucy at Comic Con:

Speaking of which, rumor has it LL is bringing a friend with her to the EW video suite. (Hint: The friend in question was a major topic of conversation during our inaugural chat at last year's Con.)

New Lucy Music CD, "Please" Released

Back in 2007, Lucy recorded two songs with the late Pauly Fuemana of OMC.  The first was entitled "4 All Of Us," and can be seen in a music video in the AUSXIP Video Lucy Lawless Channel here

The second song was entitled "Please," and is finally available on as a cd single.  The single includes two versions of "4 All Of Us" in addition to the title track, and sells for $9.99 US plus shipping and handling.  Because of the light demand for this title, Amazon does not carry any ready stock, but will order more when there's sufficient interest.  So if you're interested, head on over to the link below, and sign up for email notification (requires an Amazon account.)  When the title is re-stocked, be sure to order quickly while supplies last!  AUSXIP reporter Julie H. assures me that the cd is available, and well worth the effort for serious Lucy fans!

Spartacus in New Zealand Going PG

ImageContact Music has an article about New Zealand plans to show Spartacus. It seems that NZ will be getting a PG version of the show which doesn't include nudity (there goes 95% of Episode 9 <g>)

Ausiello to Interview Lucy and Mystery Guest at SDCC

Ausiello will once again interview Lucy who will be bringing a mystery guest with her when they meet again at the San Diego Comic Con. Here is the latest from Ausiello in his regular column at EW:

Question: It's common knowledge that you're going to Comic-Con. But what is not common knowledge is what exactly you'll be doing there. Spill it! --Jason

Ausiello: I don't think I like what you're insinuating. Similar to last year, I will be holed up at Entertainment Weekly's base camp at the [spoiler alert] Hotel conducting non-stop interviews with the casts of The Big Bang Theory, Fringe, Glee, Bones, Spartacus, Castle, etc. Prior to each interview I'll be soliciting questions via my Twitter account -- @michaelausiello -- so Start. Following. Me. Now. And in my down time, I'll be discreetly making my way around the convention floor hoping to get recognized taking in the sights.

Question: Will Lucy Lawless be returning for season 2 of Spartacus: Blood and Sand? I know she was knocking at death's door in the finale, but I'm praying she pulls through! --Jennifer

Ausiello: I'm keeping vigil right next to you, Jen! Unfortunately, I couldn't get a straight answer out of the show's EP, Steven S. DeKnight regarding Lawless' fate. "That's a good question that I can't quite answer yet," he hedged. "But she will be in the prequel. I can guarantee you that." I guess I'll just have to find out for myself later this week when I reunite with Lawless at Comic-Con. Speaking of which, rumor has it LL is bringing a friend with her to the EW video suite. (Hint: The friend in question was a major topic of conversation during our inaugural chat at last year's Con.)

NZ Greenpeace Anti-Mining Campaign Wins

An embarrassing backdown over mining has exposed deep divisions in the Cabinet over the pace of economic reform.

In a major U-turn forced by Prime Minister John Key, the Government has abandoned plans to open up to 7000 hectares of protected conservation land to mining, despite touting it as a key plank of its promised "economic step-change".

Energy and Resources Minister Gerry Brownlee – who was a strong advocate of the policy – will front the announcement today, after National MPs are briefed at their weekly caucus meeting.

It will include a promise not to allow mining on land in the Coromandel, Great Barrier Island and Paparoa National Park, on the West Coast, earmarked as containing mineral resources after a stocktake that identified $140 billion of mineral resources, 70 per cent of which was on the conservation estate.

19 July 2010

NZ Govt To Back Down On Mining! A Win for All Kiwis!

Well you can't beat people power. John Key's government is on the verge of backing down (according to reports in the NZ Herald they will announce this tomorrow and it has been confirmed by NZPA) on the mining issue!

Score it as a huge win for Greenpeace and New Zealanders.

From the NZ Herald:

The Government has scrapped plans to mine conservation land in the face of furious public protest, NZPA has confirmed. Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee will announced the Cabinet's decision tomorrow, after National's MPs have been told about it at a caucus meeting.

The Government had proposed opening up 7000 hectares of conservation land in the Coromandel, Great Barrier Island and Paparoa National Park to prospecting for valuable minerals.

That land is protected from mining under schedule four of the Crown Minerals Act, and more than 30,000 submissions were made on a public consultation document - nearly all of them opposed to changing its status.

About 50,000 people signed a Green Party petition against it, while an estimated 40,000 marched in protest in Auckland.

Mr Brownlee is expected to announce that not only will there be no mining in those areas but all national parks will in future be protected.

He is likely to unveil plans for mining in other, less contentious parts of the country. That could involve Crown-owned land which is not part of the conservation estate.

Thousands of visitors have rubbed this Boar's nose for good luck over the centuries, causing damage, so the statue was recently replaced by an identical copy. Lucy, of course, decides to do something else!

Kiwi Sponsors 200 Children Via World Vision

How this for inspiration. After seeing Lucy's documentary Five Days In Bangladesh, this man was moved to sponsor more children via World Vision. The following is an article in today's The Press NZ newspaper:

ImageA retired Christchurch businessman has one of the biggest sponsored families in New Zealand.

"I don't think many people would have more than 200 children," says Ray Archer, 70.

He sponsored his first child through World Vision in 1993, but the founder of Aucom Electronics quickly decided the company could have a bigger sponsorship role. "We believe we have a social responsibility. Business should be more than just making money," he said.

The company pays for all its 130 staff to sponsor at least one child through World Vision and employees are asked to write four letters a year to their children.

In 2003, inspired by a television programme featuring actor Lucy Lawless on a World Vision trip to Africa, Archer asked for more children.

Starship Supernova News

I was chatting to Bobbie from Starship Foundation today and the topic of the Starship Supernova came up. Back in September 2009, Starship held their absolutely successful concert and raised over $100,000 for Starship.

There was talk about it becoming an annual event around the same time (September) in New Zealand.

Supernova had been tentatively scheduled for Sept will no longer be going ahead at that time.  However, they are still exploring opportunities for the future.

You can watch video and view pics (and a report) from the 2009 Supernova event on AUSXIP Lucy Lawless

Herald on Sunday - 11 July 2010
Lawless, Tamihere Revisit Holocaust

Lucy Lawless has been playing the role of happy tourist travelling around Europe visiting Barcelona, Lucerne, Lake Como, Paris and even renting a car and driving to Burgundy. But it was visiting Dachau that Lawless described on her fan site as "a pretty devastating experience".

The woman who played team mate alongside Dave Fane on TVNZ's 50 Years celebration was evidently shaken by her experience. She told her fans: "I imagine a trip to Dachau, while not explicitly an extermination camp with fully operational gas chambers, nevertheless managed to degrade and annihilate tens of thousands of perfectly decent, healthy human beings. I think Auschwitz would leave me a puddle on the floor.

The Rainbow Warrior Movie On US DirecTV

ImageIt's been 25 years since the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, Greenpeace's flag ship by the French Government. The movie, The Rainbow Warrior (aka The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior) will be shown on US TV on the DirecTV Documentary Channel on 9 July at 8:30 pm EST in the US. (News submitted by Jenn from )

"Rainbow Warrior" was the name of a real-life Greenpeace vessel, which embarked upon a worldwide pro-ecological mission in the early 1980s. While docked in New Zealand in 1985, the Rainbow Warior was destroyed by a bomb, and a crew member was killed. In this dramatization, Sam Neill and Jon Voight play two polar opposites-a hardbitten cop and a eco-activist, respectively--who team up to track down the bomber.

Lucy Lawless plays the role of Jane Redmund, a crew member of the Rainbow Warrior.

A bit of trivia: Jane Redmond was the fictional character but the role was based on Bunny McDiarmid, a crewmember of the Rainbow Warrior. Bunny is now still in Greenpeace but is the Executive Director of Greenpeace New Zealand. Bunny and Lucy worked together during the 2009 Greenpeace Sign On Campaign.

NZ Govt Passes Animal Welfare Amendment Act

Back in September 2009, Lucy lent her name to another worthy endeavour in NZ; stopping the cruelty to animals called PAW Justice (you can watch a promo video, promo pics and news on the AUSXIP Lucy Lawless PAW Justice Page).

An organisation called Paw Justice has launched a petition to increase the maximum jail sentence for animal abuse or neglect. The petition called for Parliament to increase the sentence for neglect from 6 months to one year, and for wilful ill-treatment from 3 years to 5 years.

On Friday, 2 July 2010, the following article was posted in the New Zealand Herald about the passing of the new laws:

SPCA welcomes passing of animal cruelty bill

The SPCA has applauded the Government for passing the Animal Welfare Amendment Act, which will see increased penalties for the neglect and ill-treatment of animals. SPCA branches were delighted about the new law, chief executive Robyn Kippenberger said. The maximum sentence for wilful ill-treatment of an animal has been increased from three to five years and the maximum fine doubled to $100,000 for an individual and $500,000 for a company. Penalties also increase for a range of other neglect and ill-treatment offences and the Act expands the law relating to forfeiture of animals and disqualification from having them. It also creates a new offence of reckless ill-treatment, which will make it easier for offenders to be prosecuted. Read More

Lucy guest starred on the Larry David show Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO, Season 6: Episode 57 The TiVo Guy Airdate: 21 October 2007.

Larry Vs. Lucy Lawless
Season 6, The Tivo Guy

With Larry's marriage on the rocks, he sees a chance to get lucky with a new woman when he bumps into Lucy Lawless, star of Xena: Warrior Princess, on the street. He charms her with some clumsy banter, they bond over their shared dislike of Ted Danson, and she agrees to a dinner date. It goes well and she flirtily invites him back to her house, which elicits the following vintage Larryism: "My testicles got ensnared in the fly of my underwear and the doctor said I can't have sex for a week. We could go there for dinner?"
