Xena Episode Art: Season 4 Episode 21: The Ides of March by MaryD

Xena Season 4 Episode 21: The Ides of March..We saw the emergence of "The Gabinator" - Gabrielle FINALLY lay down her peacenik persona, picked up a sword and killed to save Xena's life. She had chosen the Way of Friendship which meant she chose to kill to save a life; her beloved Xena. Xena and Gabrielle both died in this episode...once again. This episode inspired many fanfic pieces and a great deal of artwork. Here's my collection which was created in 1998. As you can see the "cell scene" is featured...for new fans, this is the scene that launched a thousand and one fanfics; superb acting by our dynamic duo and so beautiful. Gabrielle's fight to save Xena was raw and you could feel the horror of it all. Brilliant acting by Renee and Lucy.

For trivia buffs...Lucy performed this song on in 1996 during the Rosie O'Donnell Show on 16 October 1996, again in January in 1997 at the NATPE convention. That Rosie O'Donnell appearance led to Lucy being offered the role of Rizzo in Grease. Lucy performed on Broadway in Grease during September/October 1997

Lucy and No Ordinary Family Update

ImageTVbythenumbers is reporting what The Futon Critic has also reported that No Ordinary Family's season has been cut down from 22 to 20 episodes.

ABC has cut the episode order for No Ordinary Family by two episodes down to 20, with its season (and almost certainly series) finale set for April 5, as confirmed by The Futon Critic.

As we know Lucy's 5 episode arc is now surely reduced since there are only 4 episodes remaining in season 1 and Lucy was going to be in the final 5.

Gods of the Arena: The Bitter End - Recap by MaryD

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena Recap
by MaryD

Oh my goodness me! Was that the best hour of television I have seen in a long time or what! I'm going to go into super fan girl mode here (as opposed to normal fan girl mode) and say:

WHAT ABSOLUTELY FRAKKING BRILLIANT PIECE OF TELEVISION! The revenge, the betrayal, the glory, the gory bits EVERYTHING is just frakking brilliant.

In my opinion the finds of the series were Dustin Clare and Jessica Grace Smith. We will see Dustin again in Season 2 as Gannicus but alas Jessica's Diona is now longer of this world. Watch for Jessica Grace Smith; she's got a bright future ahead of her.

Alrightly let's go down and do the character assessments again as others will review the episode...

ImageZap2It has the following article about No Ordinary Family (and a brief menton of Lucy). The more significant news is that the season has been cut from 22 to 20 episodes.

It was announced Lucy's arc comprises of five episodes leading to the season finale. Looks like Lucy's episodes may have been cut from 5 to 4. Lucy has already filmed some episodes in January and now she's back in LA where she's filming again. We shall wait to find out.

Zap2It.com

According to star Stephen Collins, ABC's "No Ordinary Family" is in the midst of shooting its first-season finale, set to air on Tuesday, April 5.

Collins says the show's 20-episode run (a bit shorter than the more normal 22) ends with a bang.

IGN Interview with Lucy Lawless - Season 2 Minor Spoilers

lucretia.jpgLucy has been interviewed at IGN which also interviews Steven DeKnight and Peter Mensah about Season 2 (Vengeance).

When we asked Lawless about the return of Lucretia, she hadn't yet read any new Season 2 scripts, but she did know a few elements. "I know a couple of very broad strokes," she told us, "and I have incredible faith in these writers. I would be shocked if it wasn't as brilliant as everything else."

What did Lawless think Lucretia's state of mind would be? "I wouldn't say that she hasn't learned any lessons," the actress said. "That's not correct. I would say she's learned some. But she's had something very precious, the only thing precious to her, taken away from her and they'll be hell to pay. She's going to unleash the demons from hell."

90's TV Stars: Where Are They Now - Lucy Lawless

Lucy was mentioned in the NYDailyNews.com's gallery, Cheesy '90s TV Stars: Where are they now? The info is a inaccurate in places but it's cool.

Xena: Warrior Princess'

ImageLucy Lawless (Xena Warrior Princess)

The leather clad, Xena kicked her butt through six seasons of the self-titled show. Seeking redemption for her past warlord, bad-girl ways, the 'Warrior Princess' went on a mystical quest that would pin the sexy lady against Greek gods like Ares, vengeful crazies, like Callisto, and Caesar himself.

Though Lawless's star shone brightest during her 'Warrior Princess' days, the Kiwi actress and mother of two would continue to showcase her sci-fi side in cult show 'Battlestar Gallactica' as D'anna Biers, made for TV movies like 'Locusts', and the current Showtime series, 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand.'

Historical Inspiration for Argo by Julie

Julie was inspired by photos of Lucy's Argo taken by Jo and tracked down information on Lucy's inspiration for Argo and she found it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and here is an excerpt to it's story:

WaterHorseOriginal

The original statuette of a hippopotamus demonstrates the Egyptian artist's appreciation for the natural world.

It was molded in faience, a ceramic material made of ground quartz. Beneath the blue-green glaze, the body was painted with the outlines of river plants, symbolizing the marshes in which the animal lived. The seemingly benign appearance that the figurine presents is deceptive.

To the ancient Egyptians, the hippopotamus was one of the most dangerous animals in their world. This example was one of a pair found in a shaft associated with the tomb chapel of the steward Senbi II at Meir, an Upper Egyptian site about thirty miles south of modern Asyut. Dating from Dynasty 12, ca. 1981–1885 B.C., the sculpture has been a favorite with visitors since its arrival at the Museum in 1917, and for many years has been known as "William"—the Metropolitan's unofficial mascot.

Gods of the Arena Ep 5 Recap - Reckoning - SPOILERS

Maureen Ryan from TVSquad has recapped Episode 5: Reckoning. If you are keeping spoiler free - don't read further!

'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena' Prequel Season, Episode 5 Recap
by Maureen Ryan

It makes sense that the fifth episode of this prequel season would be the most compelling one yet. It took four or five episodes for 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' to fully gel, and while 'Gods of the Arena' didn't have the same pacing or tone issues that the first season did when it began, 'Blood and Sand' still needed time to build up the stakes for the characters.

The stakes were high in the melancholy, wonderfully crafted 'Reckoning,' and many characters were forced to make difficult, if not tragic, choices.

What added to the pathos was the fact that the characters knew the prices they'd be paying for those choices -- up to a point. Lucretia couldn't know how much damage she'd do by poisoning Titus' wine, but by now, she should know that pursuing vengeance always brings unintended consequences.

New Lucy Blog Posted 17 Feb 2011

index.12.jpgLucy's quite a busy woman these past few months - January saw her doing Spartacus PR, February she did a quick stopover at the Xena Con and then filmed No Ordinary Family. She then flew back home to prep / paint Argo and now she's back in the US to finish more of No Ordinary Family!

Lucy sent in her latest blog where she says:

2/17/11 -- So in the break from Spartacus: Blood and Sand, I took on a fun little gig on Michael Chiklis' show, No Ordinary Family.  I left the Sky Tower in Auckland and flew straight to LA to finish the gig, and my, aren't my arms tired!  I am thinking up all the ways I can make Argo a more fabulous purchase for someone.  Perhaps if a Xena fan buys her, I will arrange a visit with the real Argo?  If a Sparty fan buys her, hmmm . . . the mind boggles!

Lucille F. Lawless....

lucille.jpgI'm stumped. In over 14 years of watching Lucy's career, I don't ever recall seeing this before as part of Lucy's signature or autograph. I could be wrong, of course, and I probably am but it was fun to see this on Argo's belly..Jo had to go down pretty low to get this shot and considering she's 6'2 don't ask how she got back up! LOL! It would have been easier for me since it would be a very quick look just a bend of the knee <g>

More photos of Jo's great adventure in hunting down Argo can be found here and more to come plus video.

The Real Argo - Tilly at Christmas 2010!

Image

We all remember Xena's gorgeous mare called Argo on Xena Warrior Princess. We also know her real name was Tilly.

With all the talk about Argo Starship Warrior Princess my thoughts went to Tilly. 10 years on after Xena ended what has happened to our Tilly?

Her Warrior Princess days are over but she is looking very healthy and still runs around at a horse riding stable and apparently she's only ridden by good riders. Still strong, still gorgeous.

Back Stage Interviews Lucy Lawless - The Warrior 17 February 2011

ImageThe Warrior
'Xena' star Lucy Lawless steps back into the sandals for 'Spartacus.'

Lucy Lawless doesn't mind being typecast. The actor, who became a household name thanks to the 1995-2001 TV series "Xena: Warrior Princess" and who can currently be seen on Starz's "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," admits that playing Xena may have pigeonholed her into repeatedly being cast as the warrior in period pieces. But, the New Zealand-born Lawless notes, "What am I going to complain about? How many actresses work as much as me?"

Lucy's Argo Up For Auction on Trademe

argo.jpgArgo has gone up for auction on Trademe.nz

This stunning aqua blue fibreglass horse has been painted by the wonderful Lucy Lawless in support of Starship Children's Hospital. Aptly named 'Argo' after Xena's horse, Lucy was inspired by the ancient Egyptian faience sculptures of the waterhorse or hippo, most fearsome of all African animals. "I was intrigued by the idea of a 'water-horse',"

Lucy says. "It is a very serene piece and would look good in a garden setting or close to water. It made me feel good to have it around and I wrote words up the legs which seem to me, the components of joy." The words written up the legs are "love" "peace" and "gratitude". Lucy has also promised to bring her paintbrush and will personalise the horse for the winning buyer. All proceeds from the winning bid will come directly to the Starship Foundation

The horse is 229cm long, 50cm wide and 208cm in height and weighs 52kg. It is mounted onto two plywood bases (one for the front hoofs and one for the back) so they stand independent of other aids. The bases are covered in artificial grass. Buyer must collect the horse from Ellerslie Racecourse. Please bid generously on this unique and beautiful piece of art. We're betting this horse is a good investment!

"Argo is a Starship Warrior Princess and I hope she finds a good home somewhere," says Lucy.

A BIT ABOUT THE RESENE FASTEST ART EXHIBITION:
Auckland Cup Week is fast-approaching and Ellerslie is taking it to the streets!
As the countrys best horses and jockeys get geared up for Auckland Cup Week and racings ultimate titles, 18 life-size white horses have been transformed into exquisite works of art by 18 interesting kiwis as part of the Resene Fastest Art Exhibition. This journey replicates that of 18 thoroughbred horses in the $2.2 million Telecom New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie; with each horse having spent the past few months racing against other talented horses in a bid to qualify for a starting spot in New Zealands richest race on March 5th 2011.

Lucy A Semi Regular Role on No Ordinary Family

There is a Canadian Press article (hosted by google) which interviews Michael Chiklis about the show:

Lucy's mention is located half way down the article:

He also said Lucy Lawless, who joins the cast in a recurring role, is a "catalyst" for expanding the scope and stakes of the program.

http://lucylawless.info/tvshows/nof/Image-1322.jpg

An ABC spokesman said it does not yet appear that Lawless will have super powers of her own but definitely isn't one of the good guys.

Lawless first appears on "No Ordinary Family" on March 1, the day her "Battlestar Galactica" alum Tricia Helfer guest stars on the show. Helfer plays a super villain whose ability to charm men into doing her will causes problems for Chiklis' character, Jim, and his best crime-fighting friend, George.

Argo Update - Press Release on Her Debut & Auction Details

Here is the press release for Argo and the rest of the horses - Argo's debut is today and then she goes for auction on Trademe NZ!

For immediate release

15 February 2011

When is a horse not a horse? when it's a 'Horsecycle'

Horse races are traditionally won with speed, but artistic talent will play a big part in deciding which horse will raise the most funds for charity in this race.

Tomorrow evening, 18 life-size fiberglass horses, painted by the likes of Marc Ellis, Billy Apple, Karen Walker and Oscar Kightly, will be revealed for the first time at the Barfoot & Thompson Twilight Summer Series at Ellerslie.

One has been dipped in gold, another covered in thousands of Swarovski crystals, one has even been given wheels, a seat and pedals and named the 'Horsecycle'!

Auctions for these horses will go live on Trademe to coincide with their big reveal. For those wanting to see the horses in all their painted glory before placing a bid, tomorrow's race meet is the perfect opportunity.

Lucy’s interview on The Today Show 18 January 2011 turned out to be more entertaining than anticipated. You just don’t give Lucy that opening and not have her do something funny: Coda mispronounced Lucy’s name when she was saying one of the “later in the hour we have Louie or Luly Lawless”. So it became a running joke. They cut to Lucy several times and she had made up a name tag so someone knew who “Louie Lawless” was. Throughout the interview “Louie” was also mentioned. This is just too funny. Lucy was there to promote Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.

Gods of the Arena Episode 4 Recap by TVSquad

'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena' Prequel Season, Episode 4 Recap by Maureen Ryan

Now that, my friends, was a toga party. They knew how to throw crazy bashes back in the day.

But for Lucretia and Batiatus (and their friend Gaia), as day turned to night, the buzz wore off and things went from bad to worse.

I really liked Maureen's mention of Lucy as Lucretia here: (highlight the grey box to get to the quote - for those keeping spoiler free..don't highlight)

Can Tullius get away with killing a Roman citizen in cold blood? He may be able to. He may not have left Batiatus with many options. But the look in Lucretia's eye says that Tullius is not long for this world. After all, she's got quite the backbone: She threatened Melitta and hinted that she might reveal the secret about her sex with Gannicus if she didn't get everyone to keep their traps shut about the party.

There will Be NO 2011 Xena Convention DVD by Creation

The following was posted on AUSXIP Talking Xena about the rumours that next year's convention will be the last (heard that rumour every year since Xena ended filming) and when/if the 2011 Xena con was filmed and to be released on DVD:

the post is by thrill of the quill
I spoke with Sharon today (called to order the 2009-2010 Convention DVDs, yay) and I asked her about the "last con" rumor. She said that if and when they decide to have a last con, they will definitely announce it as such so that we can all go out with a bang. Many have mentioned that, and it makes sense to me.

I also asked her if the 2011 con was filmed and she said it was not. Mainly because Renee was showing a number of videos which they would not be able to get clearance for for a DVD release, and of course, Lucy's last minute appearance.

Hottest Legendary Warriors - Number 4 is Xena

Image

The Wonderwall on MSN has a countdown of all the legendary warriors and Xena comes in at #4.
I find it amusing that they used a pic of Xena in her "blink and you miss her" Amazon leathers from Dangerous Prey. Xena wore that outfit maybe a minute (if that). Renee knew what she was doing in getting Lucy into that outfit! Smart girl that ROC.

4. Xena

Portrayed By: Lucy Lawless in "Xena: Warrior Princess"

Origin: Fictional Greek female warrior on a quest for redemption who uses her fighting skills to help the vulnerable. This character still has entire conventions devoted to her every year, despite the show's cancellation a decade ago. Who could have anticipated that!

Xena In Australia on Foxtel AND 7Mate - Season 1

ImageAs reported on 22 January 2011 - Xena Returning to Australian TV in February 2011, Xena fans can also catch our dynamic duo on Foxtel's SciFi Channel starting with Season 1!

Tomorrow we have Chariots of War on SciFi and The Titans on 7Mate!

New Zealand-filmed Xena: Warrior Princess is the highly successful spin-off of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. In the original show, Xena (Lucy Lawless) is a fierce and formidable villainess, the leader of a vast army bent on destruction and devastation, but she casts off her evil ways and devotes the rest of her life to making amends to her victims and protecting the innocent - a task complicated by the many enemies who neither forgave nor forgot.

Xena’s constant companion is the young and beautiful Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), an aspiring "bard", eager to experience adventure first-hand, but who ultimately becomes Xena's devoted friend and confidant.

And what adventures they have! Xena and Gabrielle journey through Greece, Italy, Scandanavia, Africa, India, and China, with side trips to the Underworld, even to the future, in which the two heroines find themselves in reincarnated form.

Plenty of tongue in cheek humour and messing about with history sees spoofs on beauty contests, spaghetti Westerns, Danny Kaye films, theme parks, pro wrestling, Broadway musicals, and even Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

For mythological mayhem, Xena is the place to be!

Starship Needs A Hand - Lucy's Resene Facebook Page Needs More LIKES!

As you all know Lucy is painting a horse for the Resene Fastest Art Exhibition. Now this is where we (the fans) can help. How often do I beg for you all to go and like a Facebook page? I don't think I've ever done that before. If it looks like I'm begging..I am (and believe me, I never thought I would beg for someone to "LIKE" a facebook page but this is Starship and it is Lucy so...go LIKE!)

If we can get the most ‘likes’ of all the listed horses in this horse race then Starship will get $5000! That's an EXTRA $5000 on top of the auction price that Lucy's horse goes for. Not bad for a little clicking ... yes? YES so please go and LIKE the facebook page.

She's currently in 3rd place (and on just checking there is 838 people liking her facebook page). We need alot more than that so please go to your facebook account and log in...

then go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/Resene-Fastest-Art-Exhibition-Lucy-Lawless/173107662731444

and Like the page. That's all. It's painless and it will make you feel good knowing you are helping Starship just by a single click!

The Incredible Lucy Lawless and The Younger Lucretia

Image

Daemon's TV has a write up about Episode 2 Missio but it's the part in their review about Lucy that I found to be in sync with my feelings about Lucy's portrayal of Lucretia.

I wasn't too sure how Lucy was going to play Lucretia (the younger Lucretia) since we all had an idea of what Lucretia had become (personally I don't hate the B&S Lucretia..I think she's really a very sad and lonely woman even though her husband loves her and she was horizontal dancing with Crixus. I actually liked her but then I like all the bad girls Lucy plays). Lucy as the younger Lucretia is INCREDIBLE. Lucy is enjoying this character so much.

Check out Daemons TV's comments below

One person who has also impressed the hell out of me is Lucy Lawless. This prequel Lucretia is filled with all sorts of shifting, conflicted
emotions, and Lawless lets us see them all.

This Lucretia is not as hard-edged (or crazy) as the B&S Lucretia, and Lawless plays her with a younger spirit. It’s not just the makeup, hair, and wardrobe departments taking what appear to be nearly ten years off her age.

She’s doing it with body language and with her eyes. Never have I seen
such uncertainty from a Lucy Lawless character. (I actually thought she was on the downslide after her forgettable turn on Battlestar Galactica, but color me incorrect, and until she disappoints I am now going to refer to her as Lucy Flawless!) I can’t wait to see more development as she hurtles toward the Lucretia we know and hate.

Gods of the Arena Episode 3 Review - TV Squad

Image

'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena' Prequel Season, Episode 3 Recap by Maureen Ryan
TV Squad

The superficial reputation of 'Spartacus' among those who haven't paid close attention to the show is that it's merely a toga-era soap opera drenched in sex, blood and more sex.

Sure, it has all those elements, many of which can be counted on for good, unclean fun. But there are emotional stakes to most battles and bedroom encounters. And as 'Paterfamilias' showed, sometimes sex can be used as a weapon, and those encounters, when choice is removed, can be uglier than anything seen in the arena.

New Lucy Written Blog On Official Site & Renee's Movie Infinity

In addition to Lucy's video blog about the Resene horse - click here to view, Lucy has posted a new written blog about her visit to the 2011 Xena Convention. Renee's movie "Infinity" was shown and everyone was emotional - Renee's movies do tend to pack an emotional wallop (I remember watching Words Unspoken at the 2010 Xena Con and that had to be the most emotional I've ever seen the Xena crowd to be (other than giddy with joy). Renee's films (films she actually has a hand in creating) are very powerful. In my opinion that makes them absolutely fantastic whether you like or dislike the content, they will make you think and feel. It would be absolutely mind blowing to have Lucy star in one of those Renee written/directed films.

Now back to Lucy's blog... Lucy came right at the end and it seems she misunderstood what had happened. Easy enough to do. Go and read Lucy's blog.

Steven Talks About Lucy as Lucretia - Assignment X Part 2

Steven DeKnight's interview with Assignment X Part 2 has been posted and there several Lucy mentions:

AX: How did you wind up casting Lucy Lawless, who is married to your fellow executive producer Robert Tapert, in the leading role of Lucretia?

DeKNIGHT: I saw her work on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, which I thought was wonderful. So my only concern was asking Rob, "Hey, how do you feel about your wife being on the show completely naked in all these crazy situations?" [laughs] I was planning on broaching that subject later on, when we started to cast the role. Then he called me up one day and said, "Hey, what do you think about my wife for the part?" And I said, "Oh, I think she's perfect!" I was thrilled to have her. I think the depth of her acting and her skill in this series, it's just stunning. She is so good in this.

AX: Lucy Lawless is still famous for XENA and Peter Mensah, who plays Doctore/Oenomaus was seen by a lot of people being on the receiving end of that "This is Sparta!" kick in 300. Do you have any concerns that putting them in certain situations might at least tap on the fourth wall?

DeKNIGHT: You know, honestly, from our point of view, no. We just wanted the best people for the job and we thought they were hands-down the best people for the job. For example, Peter, who is fantastic in the role as Doctore the trainer, we didn't want to veer away from him just because he had another role. We don't have him kicking anybody into a hole. We definitely don't want to replay classic moments like that. And Lucy will never throw anything circular and sharp, definitely not like that, but it's outside of what these characters actually do anyway.

Spartacus The Game on Facebook - Start Your Own Ludus!

Image

The latest from the Official Spartacus Twitter Account about the Facebook Spartacus Game

Become a lanista, start your own ludus, then assemble, train and fight your gladiators

Click here for more on Facebook

More info on the Game from the Hollywood Reporter 1 January 2011

Starz's digital media unit is trying its hand at its first Facebook social media game tied to the premium TV service's Spartacus franchise, making it one of the first major TV properties to get a social game.

The company will also launch an iPad script app that will present Spartacus episode scripts with video and commentary, director's notes, cast photos, historical background information and more. The free Spartacus: Gods of the Arena game -- which works similar to such hit social games as Mafia Wars that have become one of the red-hot areas of the entertainment industry -- will launch in limited beta on Thursday to the first 10,000 fans who register on Facebook. The full public launch will happen Jan. 20, a day before the Starz TV debut of the Spartacus prequel, which has the same name as the game. Social media gaming publisher 6waves -- which, with more than 75 million monthly active users, is one of the largest players in the space -- will help Starz launch the game. Starz hopes to use the game, one of the first social games based on a hit TV show, to further engage and immerse existing fans and possibly reach new ones, as well as make money via the sale of virtual goods inside the game.
