Lucy Interview with Interview Magazine: Lucy Lawless Visits Pawnee

Image634838086499199219 The Parks and Recreation episodes featuring Lucy are soon to be seen (on 4 October) so that means we will be getting more information about Lucy's role as Diane Lewis, a single mother of two young girls.

Interview Magazine features a new Lucy interview about her role on Parks and Recreation.

INTERVIEW MAGAZINE
September 2012

Lucy Lawless Visits Pawnee

It would be difficult to overstate the cultural impact of Lucy Lawless over the years. How many other actresses can claim to have inspired a dwarf planet, or an experimental line of military uniforms? At only 44, Lawless boasts a curriculum vitae that would surely make even Ph.D. seeker James Franco blush—she's a proud mother of three, an impassioned environmental activist, ally to the LGBT community, a musician who has played sold-out performances in New York and LA, a speaker of four languages, and perhaps most famously, a Warrior Princess.

Her itinerary this fall? Comedy. Ever versatile, Lawless guest-stars this fall on the NBC hit Parks and Recreation as Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman)'s love interest. "It's so funny," Offerman said to the Huffington Post. "We realized that the world of popular culture had been creating the perfect candidate for many years: the female champion of the universe." Though the role may initially seem to be an odd fit for the New Zealand native, Lawless is no stranger to exercising her wit, having begun her onscreen career as a sketch comic in the New Zealand show Funny Business. Since then, she's tickled plenty of funny bones on The Simpsons, Two and a Half Men, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. "There were many episodes of Xena that were pure slapstick," Lawless laughs. "Bruce Campbell, who plays Autolycus, we did a lot of kooky stuff with him."

Of the many things accounted for in Lawless' daily schedule, sleep surely isn't one of them. Her work as a Greenpeace ambassador recently cost her court time—she and five other volunteers climbed up to the top of an oilrig bound for offshore drilling, and were promptly arrested. "Have to go face the judge," she remarks wincingly. As if that weren't enough to manage, she's back in school, pursuing a degree in philosophy, and loving every minute of it. "If I could hide in academia for three years, I'd do that," she says with a smile.
Lawless spoke to us in Los Angeles en route to New Zealand ("It's right next to New York in the dictionary," she smirks), and we talked Parks and Recreation, unintentionally offending Ted Danson, life after Xena, and the relationship between her activism work and newfound interest in philosophy.

Lucy on Parks and Recreation News Update

Image634837229808466797The Huffington Post has an interview with Nick Offerman who will be Lucy's love interest on Parks and Recreation.
(the picture on the left is from the Calzones Blog - click here to view the larger version)

Here are some of the Lucy tidbits from that interview.

"When we came down to figuring out who it was going to be, we realized that the world of popular culture had been creating the perfect candidate for many years: the female champion of the universe."

When asked how many episodes Lucy will be in, Nick said at least 3 or 4  (we initially got the news that Lucy will be in a couple of episodes so it looks like this has increased to 3 or 4 which is FANTASTIC!)

On working with Lucy:
It was really fun also to just have someone who has such a statuesque presence. Lucy is such an incredible leading lady that I haven't had the opportunity in my entire career to stand next to someone like her and speak dialogue, so it's pretty exciting. [Laughs.]

So you were a fan of hers before?
My favorite work of hers has been "Battlestar Galactica." It's been one of the many incredible boons of my dream job is I get to work with people who walk among the giants. [Laughs.]

Lucy Wears Save The Arctic T-Shirt & Shell Stops Drilling!

I just love Lucy's sense of humour. She was on twitter this morning and showing off her t-shirt that brought about Shell's decision to stop drilling in the arctic for the year. All kidding aside, yesterday's news that Shell had decided to postpone their drilling of the arctic came as welcome news. This kind of postponement is very welcome. As we reported yesterday: Shell has abandoned controversial plans to start drilling for oil in the Arctic this year after a final test of its environmental protection equipment failed to meet the standards required to gain a full drilling permit.  The oil and gas group said a new type of "containment dome" designed for use in the event of a leaking wellhead  had been damaged during testing. (Read more of that article)

On 24 February 2012, Lucy Lawless and seven Greenpeace Protesters (aka The Taranaki 8) scaled the Noble Discoverer's derrick to protest Shell's plans to drill in the arctic. This protest signaled the start of an ongoing campaign to halt drilling for oil in the pristine waters of the Arctic. All eight protesters pleaded guilty of trespassing. The sentencing was due to take place on 14 September but it was postponed after Shell demanded (via the police) Greenpeace pay $700,000 in damages. The court case will next be heard on 22 November 2012.

Save The Arctic: Shell Postpones Arctic Drilling Until Next Year

1This is a bit of good news in the ongoing campaign to stop Shell drilling in the Arctic. It won't stop the company from achieving it's mission BUT it won't be doing anything about it this year.

The following article is from The Guardian Shell postpones plans to start Arctic drilling until next year

Firm abandons efforts to start drilling before winter after test of protection systems fails to meet standard to gain permit

Shell has abandoned controversial plans to start drilling for oil in the Arctic this year after a final test of its environmental protection equipment failed to meet the standards required to gain a full drilling permit.

The oil and gas group said a new type of "containment dome" – designed for use in the event of a leaking wellhead – had been damaged during testing.

"During a final test, the containment dome aboard the Arctic Challenger barge was damaged," Shell told investors in an update on Monday morning. "It is clear that some days will be required to repair and fully assess dome readiness."

As a result Shell has been unable to secure a permit to undertake full drilling operations and will have to wait at least until after the Arctic winter to resume its efforts.

About Lucy's Character

Lucy's character....... well, what can we say, she took her position in the dark, lights out ready for us to see what she was going to do.  Lights up... and Lucy is bending over with her butt stuck up in the air at the audience as her character is peeing in the streets !!  (for those with keen hearing, you actually knew it was Lucy on stage by the groan she let out as she was peeing - think A Tale of Two Muses toilet scene)[Dressed in, umm, help, a dress, don't ask me about colour, a shade of green or was it grey but it was open backed]

She proceeds to have an hysterical drunken "conversation" with an officer about men & women peeing in the streets, the rights & wrong, inequalities, I forget the actual words, but do remember her going from drunken character peeing & arguing to suddenly striking a goddess statue with grace & pose (and toned arms).   Read More

Lucy and Taranaki 7 Court Case POSTPONED to 22 November 2012

Lucy's court case has once again been postponed. Now this is getting ridiculous. It seems Shell wants some money...to the tune of $700,000. Check out Lucy's Tweet!  Voxy is reporting: The presiding judge has adjourned sentencing to November 22nd, on the basis that Police are seeking reparation. Greenpeace New Zealand understands that these are in excess of $700,000, and are being lodged on the behalf of Shell. Greenpeace NZ has insufficient detail to comment further, but it is likely that reparation will not be agreed to.

In the early hours of 24 February 2012 in Taranaki 8 fearless Greenpeace activists boarded the Noble Discoverer and scaled the derrick. They stayed up on that derrick for 3.5 days and by staying there they brought attention to the world Shell's plans for drilling in the Arctic. No longer was it a story relegated to the inner pages of the newspaper or deeply buried online. It shone a light on Shell's plans to be the first in a race to use up the Arctic's oil. Lucy Lawless used her name and her celebrity to such devastating effect that the whole world paid attention. That is not to take away from the rest of the Greenpeace protesters but if it wasn't for Lucy being involved, their valiant effort would have been overlooked.

Upcoming Lucy Interview: The Partially Examined Life Philosophy Podcast #64

The Partially Examined Life Philosophy Podcast will be interviewing Lucy for their upcoming podcast (Number 64) on Fame and celebrity. The latest podcast is #62. The format is an informal roundtable discussion, with each episode loosely focused on a short reading that introduces at least one “big” philosophical question, concern or idea.

The official site states:

The jumping-off point for our discussion was a 2010 book, Fame: What the Classics Tell Us About Our Cult of Celebrity by Tom Payne, who’s a British classics dude who wrote book reviews for The Telegraph and now teaches classics at the Sherborne School in Dorset, England (here are some of his articles at Huffington Post, to get a flavor of his writing). The book combines anecdotes about Homeric heroes and Roman emperors with discussion of people like Britney Spears and Kate Winslet. His thesis is that celebrities fill a social need, an outlet for our collective aggression, that we can trace back to ancient times, where young maidens were lavishly bestowed with fineries and then sacrified. We idolize them, but set them up to disappoint our expectations, at which point we turn on them and raise up a fresher, younger replacement. The book is fun to flip through, and transmits and applies some interesting ideas, largely from anthropologist James Frazer’s The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion (1890). From wikipedia: “Its thesis is that old religions were fertility cults that revolved around the worship of, and periodic sacrifice of, a sacred king.” Another key source is Walter Berkert’s Homo Necans: The Anthropology of Ancient Greek Sacrificial Ritual and Myth (1972). Also from wikipedia:

Save The Arctic: Mother Nature Stops Shell's Arctic Drilling

Actor Lucy Lawless and Greenpeace activists stop a Shell-contracted oil drillship leaving Port Taranaki, New Zealand and heading to the Arctic to start drilling for oil. They deploy banners which read ‘Stop Shell’ and ‘#SaveTheArctic’. Shell is positioning itself to be at the head of an oil-rush into the Arctic, in expectation that climate change will continue to drive up the average Arctic summer ice melt, and so make drilling in the region easier. Oil spills are virtually impossible to clean up in Arctic conditions. Activist Raroni Hammer also appears in the shot. Looks like Mother Nature doesn't particularly like Shell either. The following story appeared in The New York Times. As reported yesterday, Shell began it's drilling of the Arctic but they were stopped. Not by the courts, not by Greenpeace or any other protesters. This time Mother Nature stepped in and you can't take Mother Nature to court! As Lucy and the rest of the Taranaki 7 prepare for their sentencing in New Plymouth Court on Friday, the news that Shell has been stopped (albeit temporarily) is welcome news.

The New York Times says that the under terms of its drilling permit, Shell must cease drilling in the Chukchi Sea by Sept. 24 to allow time to drill a relief well if needed before ice sets in for the winter. Shell has asked for an extension because its projections show a later ice season this year. You can fight the protesters, you can take them to court, charge them with trespassing or worse but you can't stop Mother Nature!

Shell Halts Arctic Drilling Right After It Began
The New York Times 10 September 2012

WASHINGTON — A day after it began drilling its first well in the Arctic Ocean, Shell has been forced to temporarily abandon the work because of sea ice moving into the area.

The delay was the latest setback for Shell, which has invested six years and more than $4 billion to win the right to drill for oil and natural gas in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas off the North Slope of Alaska.

The company has been repeatedly stymied by equipment problems, regulatory hurdles, persistent sea ice and legal challenges from Alaska Natives and environmental groups. Shell had hoped to complete as many as four wells in the Arctic this summer. It now expects to begin one or two wells and finish next year.
Early Sunday, Shell’s Noble Discoverer drill ship sank a bit into the Burger Prospect, about 70 miles off the Alaska coast, the start of a 1,400-foot pilot hole that will form the basis for a mile-deep exploration well.

But late Monday, Shell announced it was pulling the floating drill rig’s multiple anchors and moving it off the well because of encroaching sea ice. The company said it had based its decision on satellite images, radar and on-site reconnaissance.

Press Release: Shell Starts Arctic Drilling as Ice Levels Plummet

lucydefence

Auckland 10/9/2012: The Shell-chartered drillship the Noble Discoverer – which actor Lucy Lawless and six other activists occupied for four days in New Plymouth in February - has begun drilling in the Chukchi Sea, off the coast of Alaska, overnight New Zealand time.

Shell is leading a push by the world’s oil ‘supermajors’ to advance into the Arctic, as climate change causes the Arctic ice cap to shrink (1).

Late last month the Arctic summer melt ate further into the ice cap than at any time since satellite monitoring began in 1979. The previous record was set in 2007, in mid-September, when the minimum ice extent is usually reached; the Arctic could still shrink even more than it already has.

Thirty years ago the typical size of the Arctic ice cap at this time of year was around the same as Australia. Currently, the ice extent is only half that size. Some scientists are predicting than within a matter of years, it could disappear completely during the summer months (2).

Shell’s drilling plans have been dogged by a series of incidents, including when the Noble Discoverer dragged its anchor and almost ran aground, and delays around emissions consents, and the certification of an oil spill response barge. As a result, the company is now planning to only make a start on drilling, and only on a single well.

“Shell’s embarrassingly problematic summer should serve as a warning to investors across the world. From human errors to fierce storms, the company has ably shown that it is woefully unprepared to operate in the Arctic, one of the world’s most hostile environments,” says Greenpeace International Executive Director Kumi Naidoo.

“Spending $4.5 billion to conduct just preparatory work on a single well is not only a poor return on investment; it poses a serious threat to the company’s global reputation,” Naidoo says.

“We all need to protect the Arctic to safeguard the way we live, given that the Arctic acts as a giant air conditioner for our planet, reflecting sunlight back into space,” says Greenpeace New Zealand’s Nathan Argent.

Since June, nearly one and a half million people have signed a Greenpeace petition calling for the High Arctic to be designated an internationally-protected region (3).

Shell now faces a race against the clock to complete its work before the 24th of this month, when its permit stipulates that it must stop operations because of the risk from ice floes.

The seven activists who helped launch Greenpeace’s campaign to save the Arctic by occupying the Noble Discoverer (and an eighth man who was arrested before the occupation began) will be sentenced in the New Plymouth District Court this Friday, September 14.

So It Begins: Shell begins petroleum drilling off Alaska coast - AP 9 September 2012

In the week leading up to Lucy's sentencing in New Plymouth Court for her role in the Save The Arctic protest comes the news that Shell has started drilling the Arctic. Her protest was not in vain. It brought attention to the world, Shell's plans to drill in the Arctic waters and started a worldwide education program on the dangers and what will happen when we have another Deepwater Horizon incident. It's not a matter of if. It's a matter of when. It will happen. What will Shell do then?

The following is a report by AP on the latest developments.

Image634828573121914062ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — More than four years after Royal Dutch Shell paid $2.8 billion to the federal government for petroleum leases in the Chukchi Sea, a company vessel on Sunday morning sent a drill bit into the ocean floor, beginning preliminary work on an exploratory well 70 miles off the northwest coast of Alaska.

Drilling began at 4:30 a.m., said Shell Alaska spokesman Curtis Smith. Shell Alaska vice president Pete Slaiby called it historic.

"It's the first time a drill bit has touched the sea floor in the U.S. Chukchi Sea in more than two decades," Slaiby said in a prepared statement. "This is an exciting time for Alaska and for Shell. We look forward to continued drilling progress throughout the next several weeks and to adding another chapter to Alaska's esteemed oil and gas history."

Federal officials estimate Arctic waters in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas hold 26 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 130 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced Aug. 30 that Shell would be permitted to begin preparation work at the Chukchi site even though the company's spill response barge has not been certified and is not positioned nearby.

The company is authorized to drill narrow pilot holes 1,400 feet below the ocean floor and roughly 4,000 feet above a petroleum reservoir.

Shell has spent upward of $4.5 billion for Arctic Ocean drilling but had been thwarted from drilling by environmental lawsuit, regulatory requirements and short open-water drilling seasons. Despite the requirement to stay out of oil-bearing rock, they were elated to finally begin work.

"In the days to come, drilling will continue in the Chukchi Sea, and we will prepare for drilling to commence in the Beaufort Sea," Slaiby said.

Drilling is bitterly opposed by environmental groups that say oil companies have not demonstrated they can clean up a spill in ice-choked water. They say a spill of the magnitude of the Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico would be catastrophic in a region hammered by climate warming and home to endangered or threatened marine mammals such as bowhead whales, polar bear and walrus.

Shell officials say there's little chance of that happening. They are drilling in about 130 feet deep, versus 5,000 at the site of the gulf spill, and wellhead pressure is expected to be far less. Shell also claims its support vessels could quickly choke off and respond to a spill.

Smith said workers Friday completed mooring of the drill ship, the Noble Discoverer, in heavy seas with eight anchors that each weigh 15 tons and are staged on the seafloor in a circular pattern. The diameter of the anchor pattern, he said by email, was more than 6,500-feet.

A 20-by-40-by-40-foot mud-line cellar will allow a blowout preventer to be positioned below the seafloor, protecting it from ice scraping the bottom.

The oil spill response barge remains in Bellingham, Wash., and is expected to undergo sea trials over the weekend, he said.

Shell's other Arctic Ocean drill ship, the Kulluk, is in the Beaufort Sea waiting for the fall whale hunt to end before moving to the drill site.

Kiwi Comedy Lucy Lawless The Salem News 8 September 2012

The following article appeared in the US newspaper "The Salem News" TVspotlight supplement for 8 September 2012 about Lucy's upcoming role in Parks and Recreation in October 2012.

Image634828555251875000KIWI COMEDY: When people discuss Lucy Lawless, inevitably the first thoughts conjured are those of ‘90s nostalgia when she kicked butt while dressed in a skimpy leather skirt and corset-like armor as the warrior princess Xena. More recently, she thrilled her fanbase by taking on the intense role of Lucretia in Starz’ violently epic “Spartacus” series.

Yet, after her “Spartacus” character died in the season finale, few of her fans likely expected her next role would be in a comedy.

The “Hollywood Reporter” recently announced that the New Zealand actress will return to television in October as a guest star in NBC’s quirky “Parks and Recreation,” which stars Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman, Aziz Ansari and Rob Lowe. Lawless confirmed the report on Twitter by expressing her excitement about working on the “kooky, ironic and elegant” series.

She’ll play a single mother named Diane, who is living in Pawnee and needs the help of the Parks Department to deal with a problem in her neighborhood. She ends up having some noticeable chemistry with Ron (played by Offerman).

The first of the episodes featuring Lawless is scheduled to air Thursday, Oct. 4.

While Lawless is certainly best known for roles in fantasy fare, she has dabbled with comedic roles in the past. She guest starred in “The Flight of the Conchords,” “Two and a Half Men,”“Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Just Shoot Me!” Of course,“Saturday Night Live” fans will recall her portrayal of Stevie Nicks when she hosted an episode in 1998. The following year, she poked fun at herself when she did a guest voice role in “The Simpsons” for its annual Halloween episode. Additionally, she did a rather amusing cameo as a dominatrix in 2004’s “EuroTrip” and co-starred with Adam Sandler in 2008’s “Bedtime Stories.”

Lucy on The Insider For StandUp 2 Cancer 7 September 2012

Lucy was featured on The Insider tv show for 7 September 2012 about the Starz and Be Here Now video she did in honour of Andy Whitfield and StandUp 2 Cancer.

The StandUp 2 Cancer network telecast did not feature the Starz video which was a shame. No reason was given but the good thing is we do have Lucy's video courtesy of Starz. It would have been great to have seen it on TV and to honour Andy with the rest of the fallen and those who are battling the disease.

Starz did feature Lucy's video on their telecast of the benefit but it did not appear in full on the network stations telecast.

We have a community that no only has grown to be such a force for good but it brings in new fans every day. Arctic Becomes Cold War Zone Washington Times Daily 3 September 2012

Greenpeace leads fight against oil prospectors

Washington Times Daily 3 September 2012

screenshot_01STOCKHOLM Global warming has ignited a rush to exploit Arctic resources — and Greenpeace is determined to thwart that stampede. Employing the same tactics it has used against nuclear testing or commercial whaling, the environmental group is now set on preventing oil companies from drilling for oil near the Arctic’s shrinking ice cap.

The campaign took off in May 2010, when oil was gushing from a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico. At the time, Greenpeace was startled by reports that a small Scottish energy firm was proceeding with plans to drill for oil and gas in iceberg-laden waters off western Greenland.

“It felt slightly surreal,” said Ben Ayliffe, now the head of Greenpeace’s campaign against oil drilling in the Arctic. “After what happened in the Gulf of Mexico, how can anyone respond to that by going to drill in similar depths in a place called Iceberg Alley?”

screenshot_02

Greenpeace quickly arranged to get a ship to Greenland, where four activists attached themselves to a drilling rig for two days until a storm forced them to abandon the protest.

That stunt, a similar one in 2011 off Greenland and protests last month at an oil rig off northwestern Russia are at the core of what Greenpeace calls “one of the defining environmental battles of our age.”

Spreading a simple message

“Polar work feels like it’s going back to the early campaigns: simple message, people get it and the lines are very clearly drawn,” Mr. Ayliffe said.

From a publicity standpoint, the campaign has been successful: Greenpeace officials said 1.6 million people since June have signed the group’s online petition urging world leaders to declare the Arctic a global sanctuary, off limits to oil exploration and industrial fishing. Dozens of celebrities, including Robert Redford, Paul McCartney and Penelope Cruz have announced their support, said Greenpeace activist Sarah North.

“I have never experienced engaging famous people at this kind of rate and with such ease in a campaign issue,” said Ms. North, a 15-year veteran at Greenpeace.

The impact on the oil industry, however, is unclear. The Arctic is thought to hold up to a quarter of the world’s undiscovered oil and gas reserves. Despite difficult operating conditions and high costs, the payback for Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Gazprom OAO, Statoil and other companies searching for commercial quantities of hydrocarbons could be huge.
