Starship Bids for Kids Auction: Argo Starship Warrior Princess 03 June

P1000434.jpg

It's time to bid farewell to our much loved horse - Argo Starship Warrior Princess - as she is put up for auction one last time. Since 2011 when Lucy hand painted this gorgeous horse, to our frenzied "LIKE" campaign to get Starship that extra $5000 and to the other auctions; it's time to let Argo go.

Trust me when i say this horse is gorgeous; Lucy has done an incredible job with the paint job and the art. Argo has been inside and out of the elements since 2011 - she even has her own stall (and I'm not kidding). She has been well looked after.

You can now own Argo and help Starship as well. Starship's Bids for Kids Auction page is now live although the bidding won't start until 3 June (NZ Time).

Beautiful fibreglass horse painted by Lucy Lawless

This stunning aqua blue horse has been painted by Lucy Lawless in support of Starship Children's Hospital.

Aptly named 'Argo' after Xena's horse, Lucy was inspired by the ancient Egyptian faience sculptures of the waterhorse or hippo, most fearsome of all African animals.

A message from Ms Lawless:

"I was intriguedby the idea of a 'water-horse'. It is a very serene piece and would look good in a garden setting or close to water. It made me feel good to have it around and I wrote words up the legs which seem to me, the components of joy."

These words are 'love', 'peace' and 'gratitude'.

Argo first appeared in the Resene contest. Lucy Lawless painted the horse as part of a competition and the winner would have the winning bid to the chosen charity (Starship).

Argo has been kindly donated to the Starship Foundation by Mary D. Brooks from AUSXIP.com and this beautiful horse has raised $11,360 for Starshipso far.

Lucy's fans combined to get Argo into first place on the Facebook LIKES competition on 10 March2011 which coincided with the Resene auction. Starship won an additional $5000 for that effort. Together with the $2500 from the Trademe Auctionon12 March 2011, Starship received $7500 from Lucy's single handed effort in painting the fibreglass horse. Since then Argohas been "sold"at two Starship's Spring Clean Auctions which raised anadditional $3960.

From Mary D. Brooks: "This year we need to let Argo go to another "stable"and it's going to be sad to see her leave. Please find her a new home because this is one very beautiful horse and Starship and the kids win! Argo Starship Warrior Princess is the gift that keeps on giving."

To view a video of Argo,

- The horse is 229cm long, 50cm wide and 208cm in height and weighs 52kg. - It is made out of fibreglass. - The horse is mounted onto two plywood bases (one for the front hoofs and one forthe back) so they stand independent of other aids. - The bases are covered in artificial grass.

*Please note the buyer must arrange collect the horse at their own cost from where it is currently "stabled"inAuckland, New Zealand.

Money raised from this auction goes directly to the Starship Foundation.

Support for the national children's hospital is an extra to Government funding and provides for initiatives such as building refurbishments, new medicaltechnology, vital research, boosted family support, preventative programmes andstaff trainin

Lucy & Family Heading To Tiritiri Matangi Island To Help Launch Kiwi Ranger Programme 1 June

Kiwi Ranger final.jpg

'Kiwi Ranger' is coming to Tiritiri Matangi Island, with the help of Lucy Lawless.

Eco-warrior Lucy Lawless and her family will be heading for Tiritiri Matangi Island on Saturday June 1 to help launch the Island's Kiwi Ranger programme.

The programme, developed through the Department of Conservation, is designed to give youngsters - and the young at heart - a better appreciation of conservation issues.

Lawless, who is famous for her role as Xena Warrior Princess and her participation in Greenpeace protests against oil drilling, will have to complete a series of activities such as coming face-to-face with an extinct bird, working out what could be tough enough to make holes in iron-hard puriri timber and hearing a masked bird sing like an organ.

If she and her family complete their tasks they could each earn a Tiritiri Matangi Kiwi Ranger badge.

Until recently, the Kiwi Ranger programme has only been available at ten conservation sites in the South Island. But now it is being made available on Tiritiri Matangi and other North Island sites will soon follow, including Footsteps of Toi near Whakatane, Te Uruwera National Park, Ahuriri Wetland at Napier, the Manawatu Gorge and Rimutaka Forest Park.

Anyone who wants to get a Kiwi Ranger certificate and badge from Tiritiri Matangi has to collect a booklet on arrival on the Island and choose some activities to carry out.

These could include finding out that the bird with the mask and the glorious voice is a kokako. Or discovering the remarkable story of the takahe which for 50 years was thought to be extinct but now wanders freely around the Island. Or looking for the puriri moth, New Zealand's largest moth, whose grubs bore holes in puriri trees.

Every participant who hands in the completed activities at the end of the visit to the Island will get a signed certificate and a Tiritiri Matangi badge (see illustration below) making them a Kiwi Ranger.

Any media wanting to cover the launch of the programme, bring a child to Tiri to become a Kiwi Ranger, or get further information or photos, should contact the guiding and shop manager, Mary-Ann Rowland at guiding@tiritirimatangi.org.nz or ring (09) 476 0010 to organise ferry bookings and assistance.

Ferry company 360 Discovery are making it easy for families to travel to Tiri during Queen's Birthday Weekend - one child may travel free with each fare-paying adult. This special deal is on their website at www.360discovery.co.nz.

Kiwi Ranger will add a whole new dimension to the Tiritiri experience for families and schools. A small charge will be made for the booklet, which will be readily available to visitors from the beginning of June. You can find out more about the Kiwi Ranger scheme on their website - here.

Lucy sent the following message via Starship about the upcoming Starship mini auction for a voice mail recording:

"I am incredibly fortunate to have an amazing fan base around the globe many of whom willingly support causes I am passionate about. Although of course I've got my own voice on my answering machine, if I can offer that to someone else and it generates much needed funds for Starship Children's Hospital then I'd be thrilled!"

Lucy sent the following message via Starship (Second message) about the voice mail recording)

"Thank you for visiting my auction and for caring about the causes I'm passionate about. By offering this answer phone recording to one to you, I hope to raise as much money as possible for Starship Children's Hospital. Will you please bid generously on this? Starship's 'Bids for Kids' is hosted via BuddyBid, a social commerce application that sits within Facebook.

Chairman of BuddyBid and CEO of Webb's Auction House Neil Campbell says, "Our team has worked hard over the last year to solve the need from brand owners to see better returns on their social media investments while extending their viral reach in an engaging manner. To see BuddyBid being used to raise funds for Starship Children's Hospital is a very rewarding outcome."

Starship Foundation CEO Brad Clark says, "The beauty of these auctions is that anyone bidding will share the activity with their friends, enhancing the viral and international reach of both the auction itself, and the Starship Foundation brand as a whole. And with some of the auctions we have in the pipeline, we're certain there will be a lot interest from people all over the world!"

Lucy Tweets: A Possible Xena Movie or Series but Not Named Xena?

Lucy tweeted about a possible resurrection for Xena. Seems someone is interested in creating either a movie or a series (Lucy didn't give any indication what type of project it is). With so many hassles with who owns what about Xena, it looks like this fellow may will have to rename Xena to something else to get around the roadblocks.

Lucy Finishes Her Community Service And Comments on Working in Palliative Care

Lucy has finished her 120 Community Hours (her sentence for boarding and occupying for 3.5 days The Noble Discoverer). Lucy has tweeted about her experiences working with the aged and palliative care. From the sounds of it, it looks like Lucy enjoyed her time with them.

Speaking of the Noble Discoverer - it seems this ship is always in trouble along with it's sister the Kulluk. MSN reported on the trials and tribulations for these two ships. In particular it noted the following about The Noble Discoverer

Shell's second Alaska drillship, the Noble Discoverer, was cited by the Coast Guard and Environmental Protection Agency for numerous safety and environmental deficiencies. The two rigs are getting repaired in separate shipyards in Asia.

and

The Department of Justice is considering sanctions for violations that other agencies say occurred on both of Shell's Arctic drillships. A Department of Interior investigation of its entire Alaska drilling program has already led to recommendations for new and stricter Arctic-specific regulations.

and now back to Lucy:

Press Release: Oil Companies Set to Be Handed Drilling Permits

deepseaoilPress Release: Greenpeace New Zealand
Friday, 17 May 2013, 2:56 pm

Oil Companies Lacking ‘Expertise’ and ‘Financial Ability’ Set to Be Handed Drilling Permits

PM ‘Misled’ New Zealand, say Greenpeace

Prime Minister John Key has misled the nation about oil industry safety standards, Greenpeace said today, as an amendment to the controversial Crown Minerals Bill is set to allow companies with no previous experience of drilling to get the relevant permits.

Just last month, during a speech covering offshore oil drilling standards, Key claimed, in front of an audience of oil executives and journalists that “This government is very clear; we won’t let cowboys operate here in New Zealand.”

But today Key’s government has tabled an amendment to the Crown Minerals Bill which will allow companies with no previous experience of drilling or ‘financial ability’ to get the relevant offshore oil permits.

The government explanation to the amendment, which is heard in Parliament this afternoon, says: ‘An applicant for a Tier 1 permit for exploration who does not have the expertise or financial ability to undertake exploration drilling activities will be able to be granted a permit on a conditional basis.’ Once the company has carried out initial survey work it can, according to the amendment, ‘build its own capability to do the contingent work so that it can commit to do that further work itself’.

A Tier 1 permit relates to petroleum, minerals, underground and offshore activities.

Nathan Argent, Greenpeace’s chief policy advisor, said:

“John Key has misled New Zealand. He said his government is not going to let cowboys operate here. But this government amendment is designed to encourage and then unleash a posse of cowboys.

“And, shockingly, this amendment makes it clear that these cowboy chancers won’t even have to have expertise or money, before they’re let lose to drill in our precious seas.”

Last month, an earlier amendment to the same Bill, designed to criminalise aspects of peaceful protests at sea, was slammed by a range of well-known New Zealand groups and individuals.

In a joint statement, Greenpeace, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer QC, Peter Williams QC, WWF, Forest and Bird, Dame Anne Salmond, Rikirangi Gage of Te Whanau-a-Apanui, Sir Ngatata Love, the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, George Armstrong (founder of the Peace Squadron), Amnesty International NZ, Lucy Lawless and many others, said that energy minister Simon Bridges’ “new law is a sledgehammer designed to attack peaceful protest” and is “being bundled through Parliament without proper scrutiny despite its significant constitutional, democratic and human rights implications.”

Over 40,000 people have now added their name to the statement and, in a Horizon Research poll carried out last month, 79 per cent of those asked said that the earlier amendment should be withdrawn completely or sent back to a select committee of politicians for more scrutiny and more chance for the public to have a say.

Synopsis:

Michael is hired by Evelyn, an attractive woman whose ex-husband, Doug, has taken their son and gone into hiding. A former operative, Evelyn will stop at nothing to find Doug and kill him. She's not above going after the people Michael cares about to get the information she wants. With help from Fiona and Sam, Michael comes up with a plan to save Doug. Michael must think like an assassin and use the connection he had with Evelyn to turn the tables on her.

Meanwhile, Michael's plans to travel to Washington D.C. to confront the man who burned him are put on hold when he discovers that the man is coming to Miami to confront him instead.

Sonny and Lucy in Auction
North Harbour News, New Zealand
17 May 2013

An auction raising money for the Starship children’s hospital is now live on Facebook.

Personal recording, left: A voicemail message by Xena: Warrior Princess actress Lucy Lawless is one of the many items The Starship Foundation has on its live auction page on Facebook. Sonny signed, below: A Sydney Roosters rugby league jersey signed by Sonny Bill Williams is also offered.

The Starship Foundation launched its Bids for Kids on Wednesday and it is believed to be the first charity in New Zealand to hold a live auction on Facebook.

From Monday people from around the world will get the opportunity to bid on auctions over the next six weeks.

One of the auction items includes a personalised voicemail message by Lucy Lawless, famous for her role as Xena: Warrior Princess, recorded on the winning bidder’s phone.

‘‘I am incredibly fortunate to have an amazing fan base around the globe, many of whom willingly support causes I am passionate about,’’ Lucy says.

‘ ‘ Although of course I’ve got my own voice on my answering machine, if I can offer that to someone else and it generates much needed funds for Starship children’s hospital then I’d be thrilled.’’

Other items include a never worn Sydney Roosters rugby league jersey signed by Sonny Bill Williams, and an artwork by New Zealand artist Denys Watkins.

‘‘The beauty of these auctions is that anyone bidding will share the activity with their friends, enhancing the viral and international reach of both the auction itself, and the Starship Foundation brand as a whole,’’ says chief executive officer of the Starship Foundation Brad Clark.

More Starship "Bids For Kids" Lucy Related Auction Items incl Argo Starship Warrior Princess!

Alrighty we have two more items that will be added to the "Bids for Kids" auction listing that Lucy fans may be interested in bidding in addition to Lucy's Voice Mail Message - Information on when these items will be going up onto the Bids For Kids Starship Facebook page will be announced soon

We have Argo Starship Warrior Princess - Lucy's Resene Horse Artwork and Lucy's Matchbox Art which have been donated to Starship for the "Bids for Kids" auction.

ARGO STARSHIP WARRIOR PRINCESS

P1000433

Yes Argo Starship Warrior Princess is once again going up for a Starship Auction and this time she is finally leaving the AUSXIP Stables and finding a new home. This horse is the gift that keeps on giving. Argo has raised $11,350 for Starship since she first appeared in the Resene contest.

She's a very quiet guest but she requires some room; she won't need a lot of food but you may feel like patting her every time you see her. She is truly a gorgeous piece of art. She is EXTREMELY tall and the pictures don't do her justice. Lucy did an amazing job with this artwork.

The horse is 229cm long, 50cm wide and 208cm in height and weighs 52kg. It is mounted onto two plywood bases (one for the front hoofs and one for the back) so they stand independent of other aids. The bases are covered in artificial grass.

Argo has been indoors since she was initially bought and has been well looked after. Buyer must collect the horse from where it's currently "stabled" in Auckland.

Here is the video of Argo when she was on display

This stunning aqua blue fibreglass horse has been painted by the wonderful Lucy Lawless in support of Starship Children's Hospital. Aptly named 'Argo' after Xena's horse, Lucy was inspired by the ancient Egyptian faience sculptures of the waterhorse or hippo, most fearsome of all African animals. "I was intrigued by the idea of a 'water-horse',"

Lucy says. "It is a very serene piece and would look good in a garden setting or close to water. It made me feel good to have it around and I wrote words up the legs which seem to me, the components of joy." The words written up the legs are "love" "peace" and "gratitude".

"Argo is a Starship Warrior Princess and I hope she finds a good home somewhere," says Lucy.

AUTOGRAPHED LUCY'S MATCHBOX ART

IMG083IMG084Fabric wrapped with planting.

Keeping it green, kiwi actress Lucy Lawless used a plant that survives on humid air to customise her matchbox.

Strike is an auction of Matchbox Art created by various artists, designers, musicians and more, especially for Amnesty International and featuring tiny art measuring just 5cm x 7cm created on Beehive Matchboxes.

SYNOPSIS

1920's Chicago. Cook County jail is home to a merry band of murderesses who have all killed their husbands or lovers. There's nothing money can't buy in this place. Inmates Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly do a deal with smooth-talking, manipulative lawyer Billy Flynn to keep them from Death Row, while he promises to make them stars.

One of the most famous musicals of all time, Chicago is a story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery - all those things we hold near and dear to our heart. A dark parable of American justice, it is jurisprudence-as-showbusiness and trial-by-publicity.

With show-stopping numbers such as "All That Jazz", "Razzle Dazzle", "When You're Good to Momma" and "Class", Chicago is a sexy musical extravaganza and an unmissable tribute to the very heart and soul of theatre.
ATC's version of Chicago transforms the whole Q Theatre auditorium into the Cook County jailhouse.

"The longest-running American musical ever to play the West End, Chicago has garnered a stash of glitzy awards in many revivals worldwide. Michael Hurst's version of this razor-sharp, knockout show about bad girls behaving badly is guaranteed to have all the in-yer-face intimacy of his ATC tent-Cabaret in 2010." - Colin

Parks and Recreation Renewed!

Here's some fantastic news - Parks and Recreation Season 6 has been renewed. This is great news because when we last saw Lucy as Diane on the show, it turned out that Diane had something to say to Ron and that was that she was pregnant! More Lucy on Parks and Rec!

TV Line has reported that Season 6 of Parks and Recreation will go ahead (there was talk that it was going to be cancelled).

Watch the Video - it has been confirmed by co-creator and exec Producer Michael Schur that Diane is indeed pregnant in an EW Interview:

First off: Is Diane (Lucy Lawless) really pregnant, or did the episode purposely leave the weensiest bit of wiggle room at the end by not showing her delivering any news ?

Nope. Stop overanalyzing it. "There's no ambiguity -- she is indeed pregnant," says Schur.

Oops sorry you can see this? You need flash

More of the interview regarding Diane/Lucy

EW Magazine also an interview about whether Diane is pregnant:
Seeking information and clarity on these matters, EW spoke with series co-creator/exec producer Michael Schur.

Does this mean that Diane will play a big role in next season?

Schur cautions that it's challenging to schedule guest spots for Lawless, who lives in New Zealand. "I think she really likes doing the show and we love having her, and obviously we would love to have her around as much as possible, but she's also always in demand for everything," he explains. "She's going to be the mother of Ron's child so she's not going to suddenly disappear. And we don't know exactly when we'll be able to use her but we foresee at least trying to use her a lot next year... The most interesting thing about it is how it affects Ron (Nick Offerman). It's his life that we've been following for five years, so that story can play out in a lot of different areas of his life. He's going to go through a significant transformation as he prepares to do this gigantic thing, which is to become a biological father. That's obviously going to be a big part of the year for his character, and it won't only be in the 'I have to read some baby books and figure out how to change diapers' kind of way."

How did the writers settle on Diane and Ron as the pregnant couple? Were other options considered?

The story line was born out of discussions surrounding Ann's (Rashida Jones) mission to have a baby. "We realized that there's nothing really surprising about telling the story of a person who wants to get pregnant for 10 episodes and then at the end of the year they're pregnant," says Schur. "So it seemed funnier to have her go through her trials and tribulations and try all these different things and decide it's going to be Chris and have them plan, and then have someone else get pregnant.... We explored all the different possibilities. We talked about it being Leslie (Amy Poehler), obviously -- that would be the first idea. That's something we want to do on the show someday but it is so disruptive to have the main character on your show get pregnant and have to be pregnant for an entire year. And Amy in real life has been pregnant for, like, 98 percent of the time when we were shooting the show, and I think if we told her she was going to have to pretend she was pregnant next year, she would murder me. So then we thought about Donna (Rhetta) just because it seemed funny and it would be mysterious about who the dad is. Then we talked about April and Andy, which seemed really fun. But at the end of the day we thought: We have this other relationship that's been in the background of the entire season and having it be Ron would be really fun and unexpected.... It's a big change for him and it furthers the arc of him having to make a little bit of room in his life for a woman that he cares about and her two kids, which was a big theme of the year for him. Once we decided that, it was just a question of setting everything up. We did an episode where Leslie suddenly saw Jerry's life and was like, 'Maybe I want more than just work in my life.' We had Tom (Aziz Ansari) have this crazy relationship with Mona-Lisa (Jenny Slate) and that seemed like it could be a legitimate unplanned disaster that would befall them. So, slowly over the last five or six episodes, we set it up so that anyone seemed like a legitimate possibility. From there, it was just a case of trying to build the best mystery we possibly could with the most misleads and crazy left turns."

Interview with Lucy: "Sex Symbol? I Didn't Do Anything To Deserve That Title" - English Translation Blogs EL PAÍS 03 May 2013

Image"Sex symbol? I didn’t do anything to deserve that title"
03 May 2013

Evil warriors surround a group of innocent farmers. A sharp war cry can be heard nearby. The villains look scared. A warrior jumps and flips in the air, her form worthy of a gold medal in gymnastics at any official competition. There’s a clash of steel, blood is spilled, a throwing disc flies around knocking down her enemies and our hero comes out victorious. Of course, we are talking about Xena: Warrior Princess, a TV series that aired for six years (from 1995 to 2001) and certainly became a cult show in the universe of television.

That breastplate made more than one fan pine for Xena, but behind it there’s an actress who is very different from the iconic character (as she said herself in the tenth Halloween special of The Simpsons: “I am not Xena. I am Lucy Lawless”) and who is fighting a very important battle. Lawless actively supports Greenpeace’s campaign Save the Arctic, which is threatened by oil drilling and industrial fishing. Her commitment took her to board, together with some fellow activists, a drilling ship bound for Alaska in 2012. She was arrested, sentenced to complete 120 hours of community service and fined $5,210. One body, but two warriors fighting for their principles. After her role in XWP, she appeared in series like Battlestar Galactica (playing the cylon D'anna Biers) and more recently in Spartacus, where she’s played the very smart and tantalizing Lucretia. Since Lawless lives on the other side of the planet trying to make the world a better place, we have talked to her via email about her environmental concerns and her acting career, which has taken her to play warriors and skilled, manipulative women who have seduced viewers all over the world.

ImageQuestion. How did you get involved in the Save the Arctic campaign?

Answer. I have always been involved in issues concerning children’s rights and children’s health. I think that if we ignore climate change, we are committing a crime against this generation and the oncoming ones. Our fight against Big Oil is a fight for all the children in the world.

Q. Which is the best way to protect the environment without having to give up on the technological advances that make our life more comfortable?

A. The transition to move away from fossil fuels will take some time and the sooner we start the safer it will be. We simply can’t afford to keep burning coal until oil runs out.

Q. You were one of the very few female miners in Australia; how did a woman listed among the 50 most beautiful women in the world end up working in the mines?

A. I collected samples in the Australian desert, but I didn’t work exactly as a miner. I’ve changed lots of truck tyres though.

Q. In Canada you attended William Davis’ acting school (he played the role of ‘The Smoker’ in the X Files). Was he your best teacher?

A. He was a wonderful teacher. Although when I went back to Los Angeles I studied with Kate McGregor-Smith.

Q. You played the role of Lysia in the film Hercules and the Amazon Women, and years later you were Xena, in Xena: Warrior Princess. Are you interested in mythology?

A. No, not really. I think that archetypal characters lack shades and nuances. However the script is everything, isn’t it? Maybe that’s the next best project.

Q. What was your biggest challenge: wielding the sword, perfecting your memorable war cry or becoming a sex symbol for legions of fans?

A. Yes, becoming a sex symbol is always a challenge. I worked very hard on that... Actually I didn’t do anything to deserve that title. It’s all in the fans’ minds, not in mine. That’s the nature of a celebrity. It took me about five minutes to master my war cry. Wielding the sword and fighting? That was definitely the hardest to learn.

Q. What was the worst thing about playing Xena? Did you get tired of the role at some point?

A. I never liked the fighting, but I never got tired of the role. It was a great time and we all got along wonderfully. I always jumped out of bed in the morning ready to go to work.

Q. Talking about the cast, are you still in touch with Renée O'Connor (Gabrielle in the show)? The ambiguous relationship between Xena and Gabrielle was one of the most characteristic things about the series. Do you think that your fans deserved that loving relationship to have been fulfilled somehow? Did you know that you were an iconic couple for lesbians?

A. We are still great friends. And yes, I am aware that lesbians loved the show. I think our fans would have loved it if we had opened a Bed & Breakfast on the coast, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Q. Did you know that Condoleezza Rice was known as the Warrior Princess? What do you think about US politics?

A. Yes, and so was Madeleine Albright [American politician who was the first female Secretary of State in the US]. I don’t have a general political view about the United States, just as I don’t make general assumptions about Spaniards. I approach everything from a level of human decency and according to my own sense of justice.

Q. After six successful seasons as Xena, you played the cylon D'anna Biers, known as Number 3, in the science fiction series Battlestar Galactica. Admit it, you are a bit of a geek, aren’t you?

A. No, I’m just very fortunate.

Q. In 2010 you played Lucretia, the scheming wife of the owner of the ludus, Batiatus (John Hannah in Spartacus). Would you say that Lucretia is very different from Xena?

A. They are completely different.

Q. You probably made thousands of fans very happy when you had to appear naked in some of the scenes in the series, was it hard to do those scenes?

A. Yes. I hated it. But as an artist your job is to tell the story right.

Q. Your roles as Xena and Lucretia have something in common: Sam Raimi produced both series. What is it like to work with him?

A. Sam is a wild man. You never know what he is going to do next.

Q. After Spartacus, you’ve played Diane Lewis, the assistant principal at the school in a few episodes of Parks and Recreation (starring Amy Poehler and also Rob Lowe or Aziz Ansari). How would you describe Poehler?

A. She’s lovely.

10 Reasons To Watch 'Xena: Warrior Princess' Again - English Translation from Spanish

Image63503420481249277210 reasons to watch 'Xena: Warrior Princess' again

Translated by Rosa Alonso from the Spanish news site Blogs El Pais
for AUSXIP.COM

When we think of Xena: Warrior Princess we can’t help remembering those summer mornings when the five most important TV channels in Spain devoted quite a few hours to programs whose aim was to entertain the youngest among their audience. Television Española bought the rights to broadcast the series in 1998 (two years after it started airing in the US) and gave it a permanent slot in La 2, that bohemian channel where you could find a handful of popular shows in between their trademark documentaries. XWP has very little to do with the shows about armoured warriors wielding swords that we can enjoy nowadays, like Game of Thrones, Spartacus or Vikings, among others. Still, here are ten good reasons why we got hooked on XWP.

1. Xena

Of course. Lucy Lawless was a hero, a pioneer on TV when she played the fierce warrior who captivated thousands of fans, both male and female. Dressed in her Amazon outfit, the actress, listed as one of the 50 most beautiful women in the world, became a sex symbol who is still very popular, especially among the lesbian community because of her relationship with her sidekick Gabrielle. The Warrior Princess was a tough, brave woman, the female alternative to Kevin Sorbo in his show Hercules: the Legendary Journeys.

2. Her war cry

That memorable sharp cry is similar to the one used in certain Arab ceremonies and rituals or in belly dance performances. The war cry Xena used before she started a fight against her enemies was the prelude to their crushing defeat.

3. The throwing disc

A sword is not enough of a weapon for an Amazon warrior. Skilled in the use of the sword and formidable in hand to hand combat, the warrior princess also had a chakram, a throwing disc made of steel with a sharpened outer edge. Xena was incredibly skilled in the use of this weapon, whose origin is in India, so that she was able to deflect the chakram back towards her, allowing her to catch it after having hit multiple enemies in one throw.

4. Gabrielle

What would the warrior princess do without her loyal sidekick? Gabrielle (Renée O'Connor) was the bard who travelled with Xena, writing the stories of their heroic deeds and helping her in battle even if she wasn’t an expert warrior herself. In the last episodes of the series Gabrielle became a competent fighter, capable of using almost the same weapons as Xena. The relationship between them made them an iconic couple, similar to Batman and Robin, or to Hercules and Ioalus from the show where the main character was played by Kevin Sorbo. Gabrielle represented the light, the idea of kindness and peace that contrasted with the warrior’s fire and passion. By the way, O’Connor is still working as an actress, producer, writer and director.

5. Her enemies

Gods, warriors, monsters, Julius Caesar… Among the many enemies the warrior princess had to face we find an almighty god like Ares (god of war in the Greek mythology), the Roman general and emperor Caesar (played by Karl Urban), emperor Caligula, or Goliath, the giant who, according to the Bible, was defeated by king David and his slingshot. Xena could fight against ninjas, Greeks, Romans and mythical creatures regardless of history dates and facts, just like Zorro does in the Simpsons episode called EEIEI (sic).

6. Historical references

Xena witnessed all sorts of historical events and starred in legends. She took part in the War of Troy, she saw the Chinese warriors turn into the Terracotta Army, and she played a part in the Odyssey. Curiously enough, there is also a connection between Xena and the Christian faith. For example, in the ninth episode of the second season, A Solstice Carol, Xena and Gabrielle cross paths with a man and his pregnant wife (Joseph and Mary) and decide to help them out. It’s also written that the birth of Eve, Xena’s daughter, will mean the death of the gods and the starting point of monotheism.

7. Joxer

The clumsy warrior who travelled with Xena and Gabrielle in several episodes was played by Ted Raimi, Sam Raimi’s brother (producer of the show). He was a comical character and was in love with Gabrielle, in a platonic kind of way. There’s no doubt that Joxer added to the show the kind of humor Raimi is so fond of, something we’ve seen in many of his movies like Army of Darkness (1992, last installment of The Evil Dead) or the Spiderman trilogy (starring Tobey Maguire).

8. Hercules

Xena: Warrior Princess was a spin-off of the series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, so Zeus’ son (played by Kevin Sorbo) had to appear on the show whose main star was Lawless. The Greek hero and his friend Ioalus cross paths with Xena and Gabrielle a few times, and there are even hints to a romantic relationship between them (each with their own, logically).

9. Bruce Campbell

He is well-liked by many of Sam Raimi’s fans and by those who enjoy many of the B movies made in the last two decades. We are talking about the actor Bruce Campbell, who played Autolycus, the King of Thieves, a comical antihero, master of disguise, skilled with a sword and very persuasive, who appears in eight episodes in the series. It’s obvious that the role of the King of Thieves was written with Campbell in mind, since it allows him to show his talent for comedy and to star in the action scenes that the actor is so fond of.

10. The special effects

If there’s something a series like XWP needs to succeed is the required special effects to bring to life the many fantastic and mythological creatures it features. Problems might arise when the show comes to depend so much on imaginary characters and the budget must be adjusted. However, producer Sam Raimi is an expert at creating fantasy with very little money [he only needed $375,000 to film The Evil Dead], so gods and demons were present throughout the series. And so we find beasts like the Cyclops, the terrible Grendel from the Nordic myths, or the Greek god Poseidon, whose body was made entirely of water. The special effects gave a memorable charm to a show that will forever be part of the history of television.

EW Magazine also an interview about whether Diane is pregnant:

Lucy in Season Finale of Parks and Recreation "Are We Better Off? and Pregnant!

parks-300x336.jpg

Lucy is in the Parks and Recreation season finale called "Are We Better Off?" as Diane.
Video of Lucy's appearance will be posted here.

In the second plot of the episode there seems to be some detective work is underway:

The other characters' storylines are linked together as Andy (Chris Pratt), who has resurrected FBI Agent Burt Macklin for one final case, tracks down the owner of a mysterious positive pregnancy test he found in Ron's (Nick Offerman) cabin. It must be one of the five ladies present at the Parks Dept. retreat, he deduces. Which means either Ann (Rashida Jones), Leslie, April (Aubrey Plaza), Donna (Retta), or Mona Lisa (Jenny Slate) is expecting.

The final moments of the episode are the most jaw-dropping. The pregnancy test belongs to, you guessed it, Ron's girlfriend Diane (Lucy Lawless). Or, at least, so we are lead to believe. As Andy is expressing his frustration with his failed investigation to Ron, Dianne walks into Ron's office and says she needs to talk to him in private. We are treated to a shot of Ron's paling face as the meaning of Diane's words set in. Is Ron, a loner who despises change, ready to become a family man?

EW Magazine also an interview about whether Diane is pregnant:

Seeking information and clarity on these matters, EW spoke with series co-creator/exec producer Michael Schur.

• First off: Is Diane (Lucy Lawless) really pregnant, or did the episode purposely leave the weensiest bit of wiggle room at the end by not showing her delivering any news ?

Nope. Stop overanalyzing it. "There's no ambiguity -- she is indeed pregnant," says Schur.

•Does this mean that Diane will play a big role in next season?

• How did the writers settle on Diane and Ron as the pregnant couple?

We did an episode where Leslie suddenly saw Jerry's life and was like, 'Maybe I want more than just work in my life.' Lucy Lawless, whose family have a bach near Watson’s holiday home, volunteered to promote the show, as did Shane Cameron and Marc Ellis.

‘‘We shot some screen grabs with Lucy on the day the Rainbow Warrior came to town,’’ Watson said.

‘‘We’re good friends. We spend Christmas and New Year together sometimes. Her husband Rob [Tapert, the Hollywood producer] is fishing mad. So is her son Julius.’’
