Well that was one hell of a morning! Just as the bidding war over dinner with Lucy and her artwork was last week, so this week we had Argo, Starship Warrior Princess going at a gallop to the finish line. My friend Jo was bidding for another friend of ours and the race was on...Argo was sedate at first and then up she goes $1500 $2000 $2400 and up and up and up and the clock reset 2 minutes with each new bid.

On a 1930s beach, 12-year-old Geoff dreams of romantic adventures. But when he meets Firpo, he discovers the difference between fantasy and reality.  Geoff Crome believes in miracles. He sees them every day on the beach where he lives in this last perfect summer of his childhood.

Despite his father's warnings, Geoff becomes friends with Firpo - a strange, skinny, magical character with a burning ambition to win the Olympic Games. When Firpo accepts an impossible challenge to run a race on the beach, Geoff tries everything to help him win - body building, weights, diet, even prayer. But Firpo scorns them all, convinced he will win with a miracle all his own. Geoff so much wants to believe in Firpo's miracle that he sets himself against his whole world - his family, his community and finally, against the innocent dreams of his childhood.

There is a very nice picture and mention of Lucy in this interview with Brazilian artist Thiago Moraes who worked on Legend of the Seeker and Spartacus:Blood and Sand in New Zealand in 2010. Many thanks to Adi for the link!

25 memorable Simpsons guest stars - Lucy Lawless

I find it amusing that they chose a photo of Lucy in her Amazon feathers which she wore for 15 seconds rather than her normal leathers. Kudos to Renee who knew what she was doing as the director of Dangerous Prey! Heh.
Those photos have more airtime than the actual costume in the episode.

Appeared in: 'Treehouse of Horror X' (1999). Dressed in her full Xena: Warrior Princess get-up, Lucy appeared in the segment 'Desperately Xeeking Xena' — in which she's kidnapped by a nerd bent on adding her to his "collection", and rescued by Bart and Lisa.

Best line: [At the end of her tale, Lucy flies Bart and Lisa home — prompting Lisa to complain that flight is not one of Xena's superpowers] "I told you, I'm not Xena. I'm Lucy Lawless."

Macau Episode NZ Travel Show with Lucy Lawless

Lucy travels to Macau. Macau is one of the two special administrative regions of the People’s Republic of China. The territory’s economy is heavily dependent on gambling and tourism but also includes manufacturing. Macau was a Portuguese colony and both the first and last European colony in China.

This is an emotional tribute to Andy from the New Zealand New Idea magazine. According to the article, Andy's funeral is on today so spare a few moments and think of Vashti, his children and his friends on this very difficult day where they farewell a husband, a father and a dear friend. They will farewell Andy with a very special haka to honour him. It's a very moving article and quotes from Manu, Lucy and Peter. The article was scanned by Jo.

Klippart sent over a new artwork based on Lucy's environmental advocate (or as everyone is calling her, an Eco-Warrior). The images are from Lucy's tree planting on Murawai Beach event which was held recently.

Goodness this morning was a frenetic bidding war over Lucy Lawless and her art. It was fun watching this unfold (not so much fun for the bidders).

Dinner With Lucy Lawless

The bidding war was frenzied as the three bidders went head to head for the prize of dinner with Lucy Lawless. What made it more nerve wracking for the bidders was that the CharityBuzz auction site reset the timer back to 9 minutes remaining on the countdown clock.

Every time someone bid, it was reset which must have driven the bidders totally crazy. When the dust settled and the winner emerged $12,500 was the winning bid for a dinner with Lucy Lawless.

You're My Best Friend, Photographic Prints by Michael Parekowhai which Lucy bought with her first Xena pay packet didn't quite have the last frenetic bidding as the dinner but it jumped from the overnight bid of $10,500 and it jumped to $22,000 where it eventually sold.

Congratulations to Nilgiri for winning the artwork!

 
At the end of the day both bidders won but Greenpeace was the biggest winner. Lucy generated $34,500 for the Rainbow Warrior III. Greenpeace sent out a news update yesterday that they were on target to get $90,000 but I suspect that is going to be much higher now.

Lucy was given the honour of opening the Auckland segment and the reviewer had this to say about her presentation:

Our eco-warrior princess Lucy Lawless kicked off the broadcast by talking passionately about our Pacific friends being literally swallowed by the mighty ocean. She called on the audience to vote, not only at this year’s election, but with everything we buy (or don’t buy) to bring the changes they need to survive.

Here's an update on the release of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena for European fans:

From Swania in Germany:
GotA will be released on the 5th of October on RTL Crime (Pay TV). Every Wednesday at 8.15PM

From Ulla in Denmark
GotA will be released on 26 September on Danish TV3+ at 10:00 pm.

We've kicked off our Starship Spring Clean, where New Zealanders are asked to clean up, clear out and sell off, all in support of the kids at Starship.

Throughout September, you can list items for sale on Trade Me at www.trademe.co.nz/starship pledging all or part of the sale proceeds to our national children's hospital.

Not only can you buy and sell everyday items on Trade Me for Starship, but there are also a number of exclusive items donated by Starship's celebrity supporters, including Spartacus costumes donated by Lucy Lawless, a bespoke suit donated by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon John Key, signed gear from the All Whites and NZ Breakers and a 2010 racing suit, signed gloves and a signed car part from Scott Dixon.

Plus there are some exciting items that have been donated by our corporate sponsors, including a 'Be a Zookeeper for the Day' experience and an ASB Classic shirt signed by Maria Sharapova donated by ASB; the world's biggest gas barbecue from Mercury Energy; a Vodafone Warriors signed shirt and ball from Vodafone New Zealand; and coaching sessions with Silver Fern and Barfoot & Thompson Starship Ambassador Anna Scarlett.

With the full support of Trade Me, Starship Spring Clean will help everyday New Zealanders support Starship kids. It's a win-win: while cleaning out your cupboards, you'll also raise money for a great cause - the major rebuild of the Level 6 Neuroservices and Medical Specialty Wards at Starship Children's Hospital.

Each year, more than 2600 young patients from all around New Zealand are admitted to Level 6 at Starship. STARSHIP FOUNDATION has kicked off its Spring Clean campaign inviting Kiwis to clean up, clear out and sell off, all in support of the kids at Starship. Celebs have contributed exclusive items which can be bought on Trade Me, including a bespoke suit donated by the Prime Minister, a racing suit and signed gear from Scott Dixon and Spartacus costumes from Lucy Lawless.

The warrior princess told Spy she was happy Starz, the American network behind Spartacus, “was kind enough to help out our National Children’s Hospital”. Lawless donated 10 costumes from the hit show, including dresses worn by her and Viva Bianca, gladiator costumes worn by Manu Bennett and Peter Mensah, and a tunic worn by John Hannah.

“I asked for Barbara Darragh’s stunning designs for some of our most popular characters – Batiatus, Lucretia, Crixus, Barca and, of course, Spartacus. Who wouldn’t want to walk in their shoes for a day?” Lawless said. “This is the gown I was wearing at the arena the day Spartacus killed Solonius. It was a raucous day of filming, I seem to remember. The gown’s colours reflect the shock and awe of the scene.”

Eco-warrior Lucy Lawless' heart is as big as her art. The world-renowned Greenpeace supporter is putting up pieces from her collection of New Zealand art for a global auction to help build the Rainbow Warrior III.

"I think I have maxed out what I can expect from family so these two pieces are things I have bought myself," Lawless told the Herald on Sunday.

"They are the first two things I bought with my first money from Xena: Warrior Princess."

The Michael Parakowhai prints of the Lone Ranger and Tonto titled You're My Best Friend have been greeting guests at the top of the stairs in the Mission Bay home Lawless shares with film-producer husband Rob Tapert.

"I think we will fill the space with some family photos now, but it is heartbreaking to see them go."

Lawless bought the prints 11 years ago for $6000 each.

They have recently been valued at $15,000 each.

The executive director of Greenpeace NZ, Bunny McDiarmid, said Lawless' support was invaluable.

"She has such a down-to-earth way and is really helping shift people's thinking and encouraging them to act."

Greenpeace NZ wants to raise $350,000 for a wet room on board the new boat.

The auction runs until September 21, and bidders could also vie for a dinner with Lawless - in New Zealand or Los Angeles - a picnic and hike with actress Patricia Arquette or a trip aboard the new Rainbow Warrior III once it is launched.

On Friday, bidding on www.charitybuzz.com for dinner with Lawless was at $4500.

Warrior-princess turned Eco-Warrior Lucy Lawless tonight delivered a message about saving the planet.

Lawless was one of 24 presenters worldwide delivering a multimedia presentation in 24 different timezones and 13 languages, created by Al Gore, broadcast globally via live web-streaming.

The theme of the presentation was busting the myths around climate change and the message was delivered once an hour, for 24 hours, around the world.

Lawless was joined at the Auckland Museum by MC Rod Oram and speakers from Greenpeace, OxFam, Pure Advantage and other interest groups.

24 Hours of Reality hit New Zealand at 7 pm NZ time and Lucy was introduced. Unfortunately due to the storms that were raging in Auckland, the feed got cut and we lost a good portion of Lucy's segment.

What we did see was a passionate Lucy talking about climate change and how it would affect New Zealand and the Pacific. The following video is of the intro for 24 Hours of Reality, the intro to Lucy and Lucy's very short segment before it was cut off.

24 HOURS OF REALITY 15 SEPTEMBER

The 24 Hours of Reality with Al Gore is fast approaching in a few days. News about Lucy's role in the event has been released and it looks very impressive.

Lucy will be doing a 15 minute intro on the New Zealand portion according to Unitec. Read below for more: On September 15, the world will focus its attention on the climate crisis. "Climate Reality" will be live-streamed for 24 hours, from 24 locations. It will hit every time zone for one hour from 7 pm to 8pm.

The New Zealand section of Climate Reality will be filmed in Auckland with a 15 minute introduction by Lucy Lawless will be followed by a half hour speech by Rachel Brown about the global impact of climate change.

The event will conclude with a 15 minute presentation by the local Generation Zero group that is taking action on issues related to climate change.

He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.]

I finally got around to converting these two interviews from the wmv formats. These two interviews were the first ones Lucy did to promote Xena. They were both done on the same day on 28 October 1995 and at the time they were filming Season 1 Episode 9: Death in Chains.

Lucy has posted a new message on her official fan club site regarding a petition she has signed to permanently stop all plans to open up New Zealand's coastal waters to offshore oil drilling and to stop any expansion of coal mining in New Zealand.

New Zealand's coastline is too valuable to risk a catastrophe like the BP oil spill currently devastating the Gulf of Mexico. Yet the New Zealand Government has just permitted dangerous deep sea oil exploration directly off the East Coast of the North Island, and tagged many other areas in New Zealand's waters for further oil exploration.

Like the proposal to open our best conservation land for mining, new oil exploration is a move in the wrong direction for New Zealand.

Expansion of oil and coal extraction threatens our unique environment, the climate and the clean and green reputation that underpins New Zealand's economy. Our Government is struggling to understand the urgent need for a new economic vision. New Zealand deserves a clean energy vision from our Government. Since 25 August 2011, AUSXIP has been keeping everyone updated on the bidding of Lucy's dinner and artwork auctions on the CharityBuzz auction site. The auctions are to raise money for Greenpeace's new flagship The Rainbow Warrior III.

As a Greenpeace Ambassador, Lucy has given of her time, her name and offered herself up for auction to raise awareness on the issues of climate change and other environmental issues.

Thank you for visiting Lucy Lawless' Feel the Love Day fundraising page for the Starship Foundation.

The day kicks off a week of charitable acts and donations by fans in honour and support of Lucy. Fans from all over the world make a pledge to do something charitable during the week ranging from helping out an elderly neighbour, volunteering their time, random acts of kindness, or making a donation to charity.

It's always a treat to watch behind the scenes footage of shows you enjoy and people you enjoy watching on them.

The Region 4 Spartacus: Gods of the Arena DVD has been sitting on my desk for a few days and I just had some time to watch some of the featurettes that come with this edition.

First one to be reviewed is On Set with Lucy Lawless (hands up if this is really surprising to anyone that I chose this featurette to review first? Heh).

This is funny! It's a typical Lucy funny behind the scenes look. From coming into work in the morning, having overslept to going into a co-worker's trailer at the end. There's a pairing I wouldn't mind seeing on the show. Won't spoil it.

The featurette features some of Lucy's co-stars talking about working with Lucy but mainly looks at Lucy being a little goofy and having a good time on the set with her co-stars. The featurette is way too short but very enjoyable.

For Aussies, if you hop on over to Sanity, there is a bonus character booklet that comes with the DVD set (I haven't looked at the Blu-Ray version yet). it has some nifty new promos amongst the standard promo shots we've seen before. It gives a brief outline of each character. Nice little booklet.

Ted Raimi seems truly happy directing Morbid Minute, his new horror anthology web series for Break.com. Raimi has appeared in nearly 100 movies and TV shows, including genre favorites like the Evil Dead films, Candyman, Shocker, Midnight Meat Train, Drag Me to Hell, and Maniac Cop 3. Now the actor steps behind the camera for Morbid Minute, which he is writing and directing.

He was asked if any of his friends will be making an appearance on the show. His answer?

In a few months I am hoping to shoot an episode with my old buddy Bruce Campbell. I'd also like to get my old friends Lucy Lawless and, if I ask real nicely, Jeffrey Combs. So I am looking forward to shooting more.

Do you have roles planned for all of them?

I have roles for all of them. I have a stack of stories at home written for them.

It seems Mr Ban, the UN Secretary General is in Auckland for the Pacific Island Forum of leaders and had high praise for Lucy and her work with Greenpeace. I like it! Mr Ban seems to be a very smart man who has done his home work.

UN boss praises NZ while invoking spirit of Xena, Warrior Princess

United Nations secretatry-general Ban Ki-moon has warned that climate change is "lapping at our feet" in the Pacific, while also invoking the spirit of Xena, Warrior Princess.

In a speech at Auckland University, Ban's first public appearance in New Zealand since arriving for the Pacific Island Forum yesterday, the UN boss said climate change was no longer "about some distant future".

"Climate change is not about tomorrow. It is lapping at our feet - quite literally in Kiribati and elsewhere," Ban said.

"And it's good to know that you not only specialise in training for policy and politics, but also peace and security. I sometimes feel we could all use a little of the spirit of Auckland alumna Lucy Lawless - Xena the Warrior Princess."

What do you mean there is no connection between Xena and The Rugby World Cup? Other than the pic to the left which was a promo for Xena on NZ TV which read "Even Lomu Doesn't Crunch Tackle Like Xena" back in the day.

The Rugby World Cup opening ceremony taking place in Auckland this Friday, 9th September. Expected audience in the worldwide millions.

Where is the Xena connection? The Director of choreography and Head of costumes are - Shona McCullagh and Jane Holland :-) Both of whom worked on Xena.

[Shona was featured on the Who's Gurkhan? behind the scenes footage, she was seen teaching both Lucy & Renee their respective dances. Jane took over from Ngila from Season 5 and appears in a couple of interviews on the Season 5 and Season 6 DVDs]

Spring Clean for Starship: Every Little 'Bid' Counts For The National Children's Hospital

Starship Foundation has kicked off its Starship Spring Clean campaign today, where New Zealanders are asked to clean up, clear out and sell off, all in support of the kids at Starship.

Throughout September, the public can list items for sale on Trade Me at www.trademe.co.nz/starship pledging all or part of the sale proceeds to our national children’s hospital.

Not only can people buy and sell everyday items on Trade Me for Starship, but there are also a number of exclusive items donated by Starship’s celebrity supporters, including Spartacus costumes donated by Lucy Lawless, a bespoke suit donated by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon John Key, signed gear from the All Whites and NZ Breakers and a 2010 racing suit, signed gloves and a signed car part from Scott Dixon.

Plus there are some exciting items that have been donated by the Starship Foundation’s corporate sponsors, including a ‘Be a Zookeeper for the Day’ experience and an ASB Classic shirt signed by Maria Sharapova donated by ASB; the world’s biggest gas barbecue from Mercury Energy; a Vodafone Warriors signed shirt and ball from Vodafone New Zealand; and coaching sessions with Silver Fern and Barfoot & Thompson Starship Ambassador Anna Scarlett.
