Lucy Lawless Xena The EcoWarrior The Guardian 30 June 2012 + Scans

Image634766445468583984 The Guardian UK has an excellent interview with Lucy about her role in the Save The Arctic protest back in February. It also touches on her recent Rio+20 visit and the new Greenpeace Campaign to urge the UN to declare the High Arctic as a UN protected Sanctuary.

Saturday interview: Lucy Lawless – Xena the Ecowarrior
The Guardian - 30 June 2012

Lucy Lawless made her name playing Xena: Warrior Princess. Now she is facing jail after a protest on board an Arctic oil drilling ship. So what turned her into an ecowarrior?

Lucy Lawless, cult actor, mother of three and most recently international ecowarrior, makes a point of not planning her life too carefully. Climbing to the top of an oil drilling ship and staying there for three days as part of a protest against Arctic exploration in February was no different. "I thought about it for a couple of minutes and then said 'yes'," she says.

ABOUT CASPER

CASPER is an organisation delivering services for those bereaved by suicide. Rising suicide rates and research evidence that suicide is increased by New Zealand's current mental health approach to suicide prevention, has led CASPER to develop a model which addresses the social drivers of suicide.

The organisation provides family support services, community and youth education which focus on building a strong sense of belonging, participation and hope for those experiencing emotional distress. The CASPER suicide prevention model is based on New Zealand and international research which shows that suicide prevention is most effective when located within families and communities rather than mental health clinics.

Please note: Jason is not a stalker but Lucy's friend who has been doing funny skits with Lucy for a long time. I sure hope we get some from Rio because that would be fun!

The Polar Bear and The War Ship Save The Arctic

    Image634764614298310547

The following is from Nick at Greenpeace New Zealand:

This time last year I was aboard one of the Greenpeace ships in the Arctic. I saw things there that will remain with me for the rest of my life. From the stark beauty of an Arctic sunrise, to the horrible wrongness of a dirty oil rig amongst the icebergs and the simple bravery of my crew-mates who took action against it in that harsh environment, it’s all unforgettable.

But the one image in particular that haunts me is of a warship bearing down on a young polar bear sitting alone on the sea ice. For me it captures the plight of the Arctic in one frozen moment.

Our captain warned the warship of the bear’s predicament in time for them to alter course, so catastrophe was averted on that particular day - but the bear’s plight continues.

Global warming, retreating sea ice, a looming oil rush and increased militarization all spell doom for the polar bear and many creatures like it that live in the Arctic.

To put it bluntly, polar bears are dying out and global warming threatens them with extinction while Shell aims to invade their home and drill for oil in extremely risky conditions where a spill would be impossible to contain.

It’s up to us to draw a line in the ice and say no.

That’s why we have launched one of our biggest global campaigns ever. We aim to create a global sanctuary in the high Arctic - making it off limits to oil drilling and other industrial activities.

Folk like Paul McCartney, 'One Direction' and our very own Lucy Lawless - as well as over 200,000 others have already added their names to our “Arctic Scroll” in the first week!

Can you join them now by adding your name and help us create a global sanctuary in the high Arctic where polar bears and the other living creatures that call it home will be protected?

Big oil companies like Shell - who have played a major part in creating this environmental crime - are now ready to take advantage of the retreating sea ice.

It’s up to us to keep offshore oil drilling out of the Arctic and save the polar bears' home. We can only do this with your help.
    Act now! Click here: http://www.savethearctic.org

Your name, together with the first million Arctic defenders, will be added to a scroll we'll plant on the North Pole seabed together with a Flag for the Future to demand world leaders declare the Arctic off limits to oil drilling and industrial fishing and create a global sanctuary in the area around the North Pole.

Thank you very much for your support,

Nick and the whole crew at Greenpeace

PS When we first launched savethearctic.org so many people went to the site all at once it overloaded and crashed - so apologies if you found it not working but it is all working perfectly now so please do try again.

Q+A: Shane Taurima interviews Lucy Lawless

    Sunday, 24 June 2012, 1:22 pm
    Press Release: TVNZ

Q+A: Shane Taurima interviews Lucy Lawless

Actress-turned-activist Lucy Lawless says the media were "disgusted and a bit depressed" at the lack of action in Rio.
Lawless says, "Governments are kind of in the back pocket of the fossil fuel companies," but is urging them to move away from fossil fuels right now.

She says Pure Advantage has estimated that there's a $6 trillion clean-energy race out there for technology and products, and she's calling on the Government to be part of that.

Says Environment Minister Amy Adams "blew her mind" when she said New Zealand is leading the way.
Lawless says we have a "woeful recent history" and disagrees we're leading the way.

Q+A, 9-10am Sundays on TV ONE. Repeats of Q&A will screen on TVNZ7 at 9pm Sundays and 9am and 1pm on Mondays.
Thanks to the support from NZ ON Air.

Q+A is on Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/NZQandA#!/NZQandA and on Twitter, http://twitter.com/#!/NZQandA

    SHANE TAURIMA INTERVIEWS LUCY LAWLESS

GREG Also in Rio de Janeiro at the Earth Summit 2012 was New Zealand actor Lucy Lawless with a group of celebrities calling for the High Arctic to be made a global sanctuary. Shane Taurima spoke to Ms Lawless just before she left Rio and began by asking her what she made of the summit and the Minister's claim it had made good progress.

    LUCY LAWLESS - Activist
Well, the consensus-- I tell you what, the media-- there were a lot of long faces the last couple of days. They were disgusted, a bit depressed. They were saying, 'We didn't expect so little so soon.' And, yeah, there's a bit of a feeling of that governments are kind of in the back pocket of the fossil fuel companies.

    SHANE
    What do you think?

    LUCY
I think if in the Rio+20 text there isn't mention of tipping points and the fact that billions of people are going to face calamitous extreme weather events in the next 20 to 40 years and beyond, then it's not dealing with the realities. The data's in - climate change is real, it's dangerous, it's coming, and we have to move - we have to move away from fossil fuels sooner rather than later. We've got enough oil to do it, so let's do it now and leave the Arctic alone.

    SHANE
You would have just heard the Minister talking about pushing ahead with fossil fuel drilling and also the Government actively urging other countries to cut subsidies.

    LUCY
    Yeah, amazing.

    SHANE
What do you make of that?

    LUCY
You know, I keep going back to this one month, I think it was in the lead-up to us having that 'no drilling, no coal mining in the national parks', that whole protest that we were part of. In practically the same week, they laid off 90 DOC workers and expanded their Crown Petroleum and Minerals Department by 30 people. Up until that time, that department was called the Crown Minerals Department, and they renamed it the Crown Petroleum and Minerals Department and spent I don't know how many tens of millions of dollars wooing overseas oil-drilling companies to come down here where we have no regulation to speak of, come on down and do whatever you do. So I don't understand. That seems like a little bit of a disconnect to me.

SHANE But don't we need jobs? The Minister was at pain to explain that this is all about finding, you know, a good balancing act. We need jobs; we need to grow the economy.

    LUCY
Yeah, we do. Yeah, we do. How can a dwindling resource be a growth economy? I mean be a growth industry. The future is all going to be in renewables. I know Pure Advantage estimated that there's a $6 trillion clean-energy race out there for technology and know-- products, so let's be part of that.

    SHANE
You're quoted as saying the government needs to recognise that there is a global clean-energy race and a way that could position New Zealand to achieve lasting sustainable prosperity. What do you mean by that?

    LUCY
Meaning that's where the future's at. You know, we have amazing intellectual property around geothermal, hydropower. We should be selling that all over the world. There's so much business out there. We should be aggressively targeting that. We should be educating our young engineers and our scientists to be growing that field and sharing that technology. There's just so much to be gained.

    SHANE
When we talk about a green economy, do you think that New Zealand as a country that we are committed and we're leading the way? Because the Minister also made reference to that quite a few times, saying that we're leading the way.

    LUCY
She blew my mind. She blew my mind when she-- She blew my mind when she said that, you know, because--

    SHANE
    You don't agree?

    LUCY
Well, you'll be reading a lot of stuff in the papers now, in the English papers. There was something in The Dominion Post the other day about how we are falling far short, how our ranking in just about every table is slipping, that we've gone from, I don't know, number four down to number 14 or something in the last 15 years. We have a woeful recent history, and that's at odds with the way we see ourselves.

    SHANE
We've actually gone from first in 2006 to 14th in 2012. Do you think the people at home will be surprised to hear about those rankings?

    LUCY
They might be, but let's hear all of it. Let's have floodlights on this issue so that we can start to build something really sensible to have a proper view of ourselves and go on with a bit of honesty. How about that?

    SHANE
Putting all of this into context, what real difference do you think little old New Zealand can really make?

    LUCY
Every single human being on this planet is going to be affected by climate change, in particular, the Arctic, which is one of--which is the world's refrigerator, you know. Every single person on this planet is going to be affected by it, so every single person on this planet has to be part of the solution. And I think we're lucky. I think we're really lucky because there's so much we can do to be part of the solution. You don't wait for somebody else to do the right thing before you do the right thing. If you know it's right, we've got to get on it.

Message From Lucy Lawless: The Arctic is rising, Are You With Us?

Message from Lucy Lawless via Greenpeace Email sent this morning (22 June 2012)

saveThe Arctic is rising - Are you with us?
    By Lucy Lawless

    22 June 2012

In February with six others I found myself crouched in darkness with a team of Greenpeace activists, preparing to occupy a Shell drillship bound for the Arctic.

I was suppressing the urge to run for the hills, to leave the greenies to it and go back to being a mother in the 'burbs. But that very fact - that I am a mother - was also the reason I was there and thinking of my kids hardened my resolve. By the time we came down four days later, 130,000 people had joined us in calling for the Arctic to be protected from reckless oil drilling.

Since then a global tide of opposition has been building, and today I am in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the Rio+20 Earth Summit to launch the next phase of the campaign. There's a real feeling here that as world leaders fail us again, we need to rise up and take matters into our own hands. I'm here with Kumi Naidoo, the head of Greenpeace International, and Sir Richard Branson to do just that - we're launching a bid for a global sanctuary in the Arctic.

We believe the home of the polar bear, narwhal and Arctic fox should be protected on behalf of the entire world and I want my children to grow up in a world where the polar bear still lives! So we've added our names to the Greenpeace "Arctic Scroll" and I want you to join us!

When we have a million names, Greenpeace will embark on an expedition to plant the scroll in a capsule on the North Pole seabed - 4km below the ice.

It will be a collective statement on behalf of humanity. The rapidly melting Arctic should not be seen as an opportunity for exploitation, but as a warning that we must act now. Clean energy, not extreme oil. is our future.
It's time to make a stand for our kids and grandkids.

Sign the Arctic Scroll and pass it on:

lucyrioAt a press conference at the UN Earth Summit in Rio this morning (at approximately 01:30hrs NZ time), New Zealand actress Lucy Lawless launched an ambitious plan to declare a global sanctuary in the High Arctic.

She revealed the plan alongside entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, and Greenpeace International's Executive Director Kumi Naidoo.

One of the key steps of the plan is to gather a million signatures on a scroll, and place them in an indestructible pod on the sea floor, four thousand metres below the North Pole.

Lawless joins Sir Paul McCartney, Penelope Cruz, Robert Redford, Jude Law, the world's biggest boy band One Direction and dozens of other famous names in demanding that the uninhabited area around the North Pole be legally protected and made off-limits to polluters. Other signatories include, Pedro Almodovar, Thom Yorke, Emily Blunt, Baaba Maal, Javier Bardem, Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel and some of China's most famous musicians. The list includes nine Oscar winners, ten Golden Globe winners and five Grammy Award winners (details below).

Right now the huge expanse around the Pole belongs to all of us because it's defined in international law as the high seas, and underneath it is the deep seabed which is the common heritage of all mankind. But as temperatures rise due to climate change, and the ice melts, the Arctic states are making territorial claims on the seabed so they can open the door to the oil giants. The Arctic sea ice has retreated dramatically in recent years and scientists say the North Pole could soon be ice-free. (1)

The Arctic is crucial to avoiding a state of runaway climate change, as it acts like the Earth's refrigerator, keeping the planet cool by reflecting the sun's energy off its surface.

    Image634759439976005860

At the press conference, Lawless said that: "I've seen a lot of frustrated and depressed people here. The wording on the UN doc was too wimpy on climate change. Our governments are under the thumb of Big Oil. .. well, I don't accept that. On behalf of my children, I reject their inaction. And so should you"!

Greenpeace International Executive Director Kumi Naidoo said: "The Arctic is coming under assault and needs people from around the world to stand up and demand action to protect it. A ban on offshore oil drilling and unsustainable fishing would be a huge victory against the forces ranged against this precious region and the four million people who live there. And a sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the pole would in a stroke stop the polluters colonising the top of the world without infringing on the rights of Indigenous communities."

Shell is due to begin exploratory drilling at two offshore sites in the Alaskan Arctic in the coming weeks. One of the drillships Shell will be using is the Noble Discoverer, which was occupied by Lawless and six other activists in February. If Shell is successful this summer, an Arctic oil rush will be sparked and the push to carve up the region will accelerate. Russian oil giant Gazprom is also pushing into the offshore Arctic this year.

In 2007 Russian explorer Artur Chilingarov planted a Russian flag on the seabed beneath the pole and 'claimed' it for Moscow (2). Wikileaks documents later revealed he was acting on the instructions of the Russian Government (3).

As well as collecting signatures for the Scroll, the focus of the Greenpeace campaign will initially be on pushing for a UN resolution on creating a global sanctuary around the Pole, and a ban on oil drilling and unsustainable fishing in the wider Arctic. Twenty years ago - at the other end of the Earth - something similar was created when the mining industry was banned from operating on the continent of Antarctica, and land-based activity was restricted science and research.

Lawless said before the press conference that: "I'm not just here today for the sake of the Arctic. The whole world is threatened by climate change. And New Zealand is also under threat from the very same thing that is driving the Arctic oil rush. As the easy-to-reach oil is running out, the oil industry is establishing its new, extreme frontiers all over the world, including in the deep waters off the coast of the Taranaki, the East Cape, Canterbury, and at the bottom of the South Island.

"If the Government would recognise the fact that there is a global clean energy race underway, then it could position New Zealand to achieve lasting, sustainable prosperity. Sadly, it is still obsessed with deep sea drilling, and mining for fossil fuels," she says.

Anybody in the world can add their name to the Arctic Scroll by visiting www.SaveTheArctic.org . If they are one of the first million to do so, their name will be on the part of the scroll that gets planted on the seabed beneath the North Pole.

Why The Need For An Arctic UN Protected Sanctuary

What is this new Greenpeace Campaign about? Why has Greenpeace launched this bold move to make the Arctic a UN protected sanctuary? Read below and when you have done that, add your name to the Arctic scroll at savethearctic.org

    SaveTheArctic.org
    The Greenpeace campaign
    June 2012

Greenpeace is launching a campaign designed to bring millions of people together to push for action to save the Arctic. That means creating a global sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the North Pole (the region some people call the High Arctic) and a ban on offshore oil drilling and industrial fishing in the wider Arctic region.

It’s an area of the globe under UN protection that’s off-limits to the polluters – a place dedicated to science and research. In the last century in Antarctica – at the other end of the Earth – something similar was declared when the mining industry was banned from operating there.
Greenpeace is campaigning for something similar at the top of the world – by making the uninhabited area around the North Pole off-limits to the polluters. We’re talking about the area sometimes known as the “Arctic donut hole”. It’s the area more than 200 nautical miles from the coastlines of the Arctic states. Right now it belongs to all of us. It’s classified as the high seas and the international seabed, but the Arctic states are submitting claims to the seabed, saying it’s their territory. They want to open it up to the polluters, so before the countries and corporations can get their hands on it, we’re going to secure it for all life on Earth.

Lucy Signatory in High Arctic Region Declared A Sanctuary

The news out of Rio is that Greenpeace is launching a bold campaign to have the Arctic region declared a Sanctuary by the United Nations. Lucy is one of 100 who have sign the petition that will go global at 8 am Rio time (in half an hour)

The first 100 signatories on the new petition include explorers, business leaders, actors and musicians (that includes Lucy)

Watch The Video by John Hurt

Legendary actor John Hurt has lent his iconic voice to Greenpeace's latest global campaign to 'Save The Arctic'.

The star of classic movies 'Alien' and 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' does gravelly voice over duties for the charity's alarming new video 'Vicious Circle'.

Speaking about the project, Hurt said: "I will do whatever I can to help your endeavour to save the Arctic from human disaster. I have been told that I should Twitter and I have been a touch old fashioned about it, perhaps this should spur me on to open an account!"

Greenpeace explained furthermore: "The campaign was launched today because the Arctic Circle is defined as the area of the globe where on the summer solstice - June 21st - the sun never sets for a whole day."

An official statement on their website reads:

"The fragile Arctic is under threat from both climate change and oil drilling. As climate change melts the Arctic ice, oil companies are moving in to extract more of the fossil fuels that caused the melt in the first place. But above the Arctic circle, freezing temperatures, a narrow drilling window and a remote location mean that an oil spill would be almost impossible to deal with. It's a catastrophe waiting to happen. Greenpeace is working to halt climate change and to stop this new oil rush at the top of the world."

ACTION

In New Zealand and around the world  opposition to reckless oil drilling is growing fast.

Lucy Lawless and the other activists stood in court last week, because they took action to prevent Shell’s mad plans to drill in the Arctic.
Over 150,000 Kiwis have have signed our petition against risky deep sea oil drilling, and almost 500,000 people have sent a message to Shell in opposition to its Arctic drilling plans.

All because they see a different future.

Our environment is our economy. Let’s not put it all at risk for the sake of international oil company profits.

    Thank you for your support,

Lucy Lawless Greenpeace Blog Post: Guilty NOT Sorry 15 June 2012

Image634753871398837891Several months ago, I found myself on the precipice of committing a crime. I was crouched in darkness with a bunch of Greenpeace activists, preparing to occupy a Shell drilling ship bound for the Arctic. I was suppressing the urge to run for the hills, to leave these greenies to it, to go back to being a mother in the ‘burbs. But that very fact – that I am a mother – was also the reason that I was there.
So I went ahead, and in the Auckland District Court this morning, I pleaded guilty to the charge of Unlawfully Boarding a Ship. In fact my activist colleagues and I stayed on that ship for four days doing our utmost – by hanging banners, doing media interviews, or writing blogs - to tell the world that Shell has to be stopped from going to the Arctic.

This afternoon, as I write this, I am a free woman. I’ve been remanded on bail, to be sentenced in September. For a while, we were all facing burglary charges. This wasn’t because we took anything, but because technically, under New Zealand law, by boarding a ship without permission you can be charged with burglary.

No one in their right mind would want to be labeled as a burglar. But had the Police insisted on my being tried under that charge, I would still be just as proud of what I did. When the law allows a company like Shell to flagrantly and knowingly ignore the realities around the impossibility of cleaning up oil in the Arctic environment, or the fact that - thanks to mankind’s burning of fossil fuels - there may be no Arctic sea ice by the summer of 2030, then my fellow activists and I had a moral right to (peacefully) break that law.

The Arctic ice cap acts as the world’s air conditioner. Scientists warn that without it our children will certainly inherit a world blighted by increasingly frequent extreme weather events, amongst the other many and varied effects of climate change .

Thus, Big Oil’s desire to profiteer from its destruction could be termed ‘anti-human’ - not good business, I would have thought.
And make no mistake; Shell going into the Arctic is a game-changer. It is the first of the big oil companies to move on extreme Arctic oil. It plans to go through with its plunder, even though estimates are that there is only another three years worth of the global oil supply down there.
It is clear that we have to move away from fossil fuels anyway, so let’s do it while there is still an Arctic to save.

It’s time for everyone with an interest in the future – which of course includes all of us - to tell those who would perpetrate these crimes against us, themselves, and all the world’s other species, that they must stop. The oil super majors must stay out of the Arctic, and must stop their rush into deeper and deeper waters around the world.

We must tell the oil companies that their survival depends as much as ours on a shift to clean energy. Anything else is a poisoned cup for our children.

Please send your own message to Shell now.

The burglary charge was ridiculous to begin with but that's what they went for.  Lucy was very relieved judging by the tweet she sent after the court case had ended.

Naturally the media was all over it and to date over 330 articles (a quick google check) have been written about it; some good, some repeating the Greenpeace press release or the AP Story. There were others who were emphasizing the 3 year jail time Lucy may receive (which is very doubtful since it's her first offense according to people that actually know what they are talking about instead of gossip blogs).

Today's steady stream of media reports were pretty much the same but one exception that I happened to read caught my attention and made me think. The Guardian Express has a very interesting article how Lucy's involvement in the Save The Arctic protest and how successful it was in illuminating issue. This is quite true since if it was just the Taranaki 7 (without Lucy) it  would not have received such wide spread coverage. Sad to say but true and Shell's plans would have gone off without any fanfare other than a few lines in the paper. Lucy's involvement guaranteed it headline news and that is exactly what has happened.

Lucy has received some positive press lauding her stand but a good portion has hammered her on the issue. Lest we forget the idiocy/character bashing  after she came down from the derrick and the shock horror of the world finding out that 20 years ago she appeared in a Shell Commercial. A lot has happened in 20 years and people do have the right to change their minds..or is that just non celebrities are allowed that luxury? That was the kind of stupid reporting that followed the 4 days of protest.

I'm reminded of the absolute vitriol that Cate Blanchett faces every time she has the audacity to voice her opinion about the climate change issue in Australia. How dare a celebrity want to have an opinion that differs from the shockjocks and climate change deniers? How dare they; they have millions so they should shut up and just enjoy their money with no thought to what is going on around them. What utter nonsense. Cate and Lucy have every right to take a stand and they have. They are leading the charge, using their celebrity status to good use and In Lucy's case, giving her a conviction and possible jail time (she won't get that for a first time offender).

Now to the The Guardian Express article which mentioned Lucy; it highlights the fact that Lucy's name brought the issue to prominence in a very good way:

Oil companies took the legal oxygen out of the air today as both Lucy Lawless and Stephen Baldwin were on the short end of justice.

Lucy Lawless, who played Xena: Warrior Princess, plead guilty to illegally occupying an oil drilling ship. Lawless had been arrested along with seven other defendants for scaling the 53m-high derrick of the ship and then placed a banner that read 'Stop Shell, Save the Arctic." Initially, they were charged with burglary, but when the prosecutors agreed to reduce the charges to illegally boarding a ship, Lawless and her codefendants accepted responsibility.

Both cases drew national media attention. Of course, since Baldwin's case went to trail, reporters flocked to it on a daily basis.

If not for the celebrity of the defendants, perhaps these cases would have skipped quietly underneath the radar. It arguably took names like Costner, Baldwin and Lucy Lawless to put a spotlight on oil company practices. In that effort, Lawless' case was much more successful in illuminating the issues.

Of the many things Lucy has said after the court case had ended the following was the most thought provoking for me:

"For the first time in my life, I put my body and reputation on the line to stand up for my beliefs and do the right thing," she told the Associated Press after appearing in court. "I hope I've encouraged other people to do the same."

That's pretty much it: she put her body and reputation on the line for something she passionately believes in. How many of us can say that? This issue has a long way to go and AUSXIP will follow and support Lucy all the way; supporting her and Greenpeace in the fight against drilling for oil in the arctic and other issues that endanger our future and those of future generations.

    Fight the good fight!

    INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

    Transcript by Barbara Davies

R5: Now the TV actress Lucy Lawless (or Xena: Warrior Princess to you and I) has admitted taking part in a Greenpeace protest on board an oil drilling ship as it was trying to leave a port in New Zealand. She was 1 of 8 activists who climbed onto the Noble Explorer in February to stop it from leaving for Alaska. Well Lucy could face up to 3 years in jail. She joins us now.

Lucy, really appreciate you talking to us. First of all, why did you take part in this protest?

Lucy: Er, cos I feel that companies like Shell don't care about my kids. They don't care about my kids living in a clean and healthy planet. They're just making bucks pumping gas to an apathetic public. And as one of those public I'm waking up.
R5: But why this specific protest? Why did you target this oil drilling ship?

Lucy: Er. Cos it was there. Yeah. I guess it was heading up to the Arctic and we believe that they're leading a charge to drill the Arctic without any contingency plans for cleaning up, you know for oil spill recovery. There's no way to do it known to man. Plus the Arctic is so under threat already, so imperilled, that we cannot be raining more fossil fuel consumption down upon it and upon our children for the next 200 years.

R5: 'Cos it was there' - remember another famous New Zealander saying that when he was about to climb Everest. Or after he climbed Everest, of course.

Lucy: <laughs> I know. My paltry 250 feet compared to Everest but ... it was there.

R5: Well no. The comparisons are there. You clearly were political before you became a famous actress -

    Lucy: No, I'm not though.

    R5: No? You're not?

Lucy: I'm not. I'm middle middle class New Zealand. I'm not even upper or lower middle class, I'm bang in the middle blancmange New Zealand. But as a parent I feel that I've got to fight like a tiger for my children and their children's right to a long life and a prosperous planet.

R5: But middle class blancmange New Zealanders don't face 3 years in jail. How are you facing that prospect?

Lucy: Well. I guess they do. The tide is turning.

R5: How are you facing that prospect though? What are you being charged with.?

Lucy: Oh. No. Honestly, the court system in New Zealand is really um it's very transparent and there are precedents for this kind of thing. So I think the likelihood of me getting 3 years in jail for what really amounts to trespass is, um, it's a bit of a stretch. I don't really expect any jail time whatsoever. Um. But we'll just see how it all plays out.

R5: But I s'pose you're being part of this has brought attention to the issue in New Zealand and elsewhere around the world.

Lucy: Yeah. There have been subsequent protests by Greenpeace and the Yes Men, you'll see online. They've helped spearhead this movement and 475,000 people have sent letters of protest to Shell. And you'd better believe that corporations hate nothing more than having their inboxes jammed by protest letters from consumers. But the complaints are earnest and they're right, and they need to pay attention to their public.

R5: What specifically does Shell do that no other oil company does?

Lucy: Well. The very special thing that they're doing is leading the charge. They're leading the charge. And this is a game changer. Make no mistake about it. They're very hot to trot to be the first in the Arctic. See. This is frontier drilling. Cos all the easy oil has gone. There's great reserves of it but perhaps it's in the hands of people that, you know... they're going to have to buy it. They might feel that perhaps the Arabs have us over a barrel, so to speak. So they want oil that we can control and they're going to deeper depths to drill it. They're going to more remote places. And colder places. So they don't care that they cannot clean up an oil spill they're just going to make money while they can. There's only 3 years' supply down there, you know that? They're endangering the Arctic for what amounts to 3 years' supply. So we have to transition sooner or later. Let's make it sooner while there's still an Arctic to save.

R5: With all due respect, Lucy, I'm from Nigeria and Shell's had its issues there, and I just wonder, they've essentially destroyed a lot of my birthplace through the drilling of oil and I just think that, well, better off in the Arctic than where people actually live.
Lucy: People do live there and they have a right to their traditional way of life. And I agree with you about Nigeria. There is nothing that we're saying that negates from their responsibilities to the devastation around their wells and for the communities in Nigeria. Clearly I cannot know anything about it as compared to you, but what they're doing in the Arctic is going to affect all of us and those massive snow storms you're having they're all part of that pendulum swinging. Bigger and bigger swings of more extreme weather events. So look for more on that front. We gotta stop this runaway climate change now.

R5: Doesn't sound like your protests are over.

Lucy: <laughs> It'll be over when climate change is ... when we've backed away from the tipping point. But yeah you're right, this is going to be a lifelong fight for me.

R5: Appreciate you talking to us, Lucy. Thank you.

Lucy: Thank you for having me.

Actor Lucy Lawless took part in an illegal Greenpeace protest in February despite the risk a conviction could hinder her acting career.

Lawless and seven others pleaded guilty in court this morning to unlawfully boarding a ship during a four-day protest aboard oil drilling ship the Noble Discovery.

In an exclusive interview, Lawless told 3 News her acting future is still up in the air because of the conviction.

“If I was not allowed to travel that would probably badly affect my acting career.”

Lawless and her American producer husband Robert Tapert travel frequently for film projects.

“It would really be a shame if what happens here prevents me from selling what we do so well.”

She says they have several shows “on the boil” that they hope to film in New Zealand.

Her current bail conditions don’t yet hinder her travel as she prepares for a trip to the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development next week in Brazil.

The only restrictions so far are she can’t go to the Port of Taranaki.

Lawless says regardless of the risks she is glad she took part in the protest.

“It still was worth it, to me it was really worth it because I feel like I have to fight like a tiger for my babies,” she says.

“[Unsustainable attitudes are] really going to rob my kids of a viable future so I don’t see that I had any choice but to go into this.”

Lawless rejects the title of an activist, saying she just identified with the cause and decided to act.

“I’m not an activist, I’m a middleclass person, I’m a mother of three, I’m an actress, but I felt compelled to get on board because I don’t see anyone else looking out for my kids.”

Despite her strong beliefs, Lawless says her activism and her acting career are still separate.

“They are completely distinct from one another. My acting career doesn’t necessarily care about my activism,” she says. “But I will say that being involved in this has been a defining event in my life, certainly a shift inside me about how I’m going to move forward… I want everything to be in line with a better future for my kids.”

Acting does, however, help fund her non-profit work.

“My currency in whatever activism or charity work I do really rides on the back of having an acting career, so I really have to get back to [it]. And that’s what I love to do.”

Lawless says she doesn’t regret her actions and will just have to wait and see how it affects future travel.

“No regrets whatsoever I’m really proud we stood up for what we know to be right.”

Lawless and the seven other protestors have been granted bail and will reappear in court on September 14.

Associated Press Actress Lucy Lawless Pleads Guilty To Trespass 14 June 2012

Greenpeace activists (L-R) Shai Naides, Raoni Hammer, Shayne Comino, Viv Hadlow, Lucy Lawless, ILai Amir and Mike Buchanan outside the Auckland District Court, after answering charges laid over their involvement in the occupation of the Shell-contracted drillship the Noble Discoverer, in Port Taranaki, in February 2012Actress Lucy Lawless pleads guilty to trespass

By NICK PERRY, Associated Press – 4 hours ago

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — "Xena: Warrior Princess" actress Lucy Lawless says she has "no regrets" about boarding and preventing an oil-drilling ship from leaving a New Zealand dock, a protest action that saw her plead guilty on Thursday to trespass charges.

"For the first time in my life, I put my body and reputation on the line to stand up for my beliefs and do the right thing," she said in an interview with The Associated Press after her appearance in court. "I hope I've encouraged other people to do the same."

In February, the 44-year-old native New Zealander and six other Greenpeace activists climbed a drilling tower on the vessel Noble Discoverer, which was docked in New Zealand bound for the Arctic, to protest oil exploration in the Arctic. Lawless spent four days atop the 174-foot (53-meter) tower, camping and blogging about her experiences.

She and seven other Greenpeace activists — including one who'd helped from the ground — pleaded guilty at Auckland District Court to charges of unlawfully being on a ship. She is due to be sentenced in September and faces a maximum three years in jail after prosecutors reduced a more serious charge of burglary.

Oil company Shell, which was chartering the ship, has condemned the protest, saying it needlessly put people in danger.

Lawless that she felt she had little choice but to participate in the protest because of the damage oil companies are doing to the environment.

She said she doesn't expect to receive a jail sentence for her actions because she is a first-time offender and the protest was peaceful. She is concerned, however, that a conviction could impede her acting career if some countries choose to prevent her from entering as a result.

"If I couldn't travel, obviously that would be a tremendous pain in the neck," she said.

Lawless is best known for her title role in the TV series "Xena: Warrior Princess," and more recently for starring in the Starz cable television series "Spartacus." Her role in Spartacus ended last season, she said, and she's now working on several other projects.

Lawless said she intends for now to keep up her involvement with Greenpeace.

"But I've got no plans to jump on an oil rig again any time soon," she added.

Press and Photos of Lucy & Taranaki 7 Outside Court

7102108.jpgThis has just been posted by Fairfax Media the Greenpeace lawyer (?) with Lucy and the Taranaki 7 arriving to court.

Stuff.co.nz article below - read the full article here

Sword-and-sandal screen star Lucy Lawless, who along with seven other Greenpeace protesters today pleaded guilty to boarding and occupying an oil drilling ship, says she did what she had to do.

Lawless - under her real name Lucy Tapert - Jan Raoni Hammer, Mike Buchanan, Shayne Comino, Vivienne Hadlow, Shai Naides, Zach Penman and Ilai Amir, appeared in the Auckland District Court this morning.

The group was arrested after they boarded and spent four days aboard the Shell oil exploration ship the Noble Discoverer at Port Taranaki in February.

They were charged with burglary but today pleaded guilty once their charges were reduced to illegally boarding a ship.

Outside court, Lawless said she had "no plans to reprise her role on an oil rig" but her association with Greenpeace would continue.

"I had to do what I had to do," she said.

While it may have been risky for her career "It's not as risky as doing nothing," she said.

Her message to Shell and governments undertaking deep-sea oil drilling was: "Under no circumstances is this a good idea".

"They are robbing our children of their birthright to a clean and healthy planet, and they know it."

Greenpeace spokeswoman Viv Hadlow said 475,000 people had signed on to the Greenpeace campaign against Shell's "insane plans" to drill in the Arctic.

The involvement of Lawless, the star of the cult show Xena: Warrior Princess, drew international attention to their cause.

Steve Abel, a Greenpeace climate campaigner, who was at the Taranaki port, said it was one of the longest lasting occupations in recent history in New Zealand.

"If there was an oil spill in the Arctic it would be impossible to clean up," Abel said. "This is what this is about."

Judge David Holderness remanded the group on bail to sentencing on September 14 in the New Plymouth District Court.

Greenpeace Press Release: Activists Plead Guilty To Being On Unlawfully On A Ship and Direct Appeal to Others to Stop Deep Sea Oil and Protect Arctic

    PRESS RELEASE: 14 June 2012

Greenpeace activists plead guilty to charges of being unlawfully on a ship/appeal to others to help stop deep sea oil, and to protect the Arctic

Auckland, The eight Greenpeace activists arrested before and during an occupation of a Shell-chartered drillship were today remanded at large for sentencing on September 14 at the New Plymouth District Court, after pleading guilty to charges of unlawfully being on a ship.
At a press conference held immediately after their appearance, the activists delivered a statement in which they affirmed their belief in their actions, and said they hoped that people around the world would continue to stand with them against Arctic oil drilling.  They also expressed their opposition to deep sea oil drilling, which could be happening off New Zealand's coasts as early as this summer (2012).

Seven of the activists climbed the drilling tower of the Noble Discoverer on February 24, while it was berthed in Port Taranaki, being prepared for its journey to the Arctic. All were arrested after a 77-hour occupation of the tower. An eighth activist was arrested on the first day of the operation.

Shell is spearheading a push to exploit the Arctic for oil, as climate change causes the average summer sea ice to shrink rapidly. Shell's aims are consistent with an industry-wide push into more and more extreme drilling environments, that also includes the deep waters off New Zealand's coasts.

Shell is a part of a consortium that recently finished surveying the Great South Basin, off the South Island's Otago and Southland coasts and also Stewart Island, while Anadarko, a shareholder in the Deepwater Horizon, has plans to start drilling in deep waters off the Canterbury coast as early as this summer. Petrobras may be drilling exploratory wells in the deep water off the East Cape by as soon as 2013.

"The authorities would be virtually powerless to contain a deep water oil spill, just as the 6000 ships that responded to the Deepwater Horizon spill failed to stop the oil washing up on the shores of the Gulf states," says Lucy Lawless, one of the activists who appeared today.

"The Louisiana industries worst-affected by the Deepwater Horizon spill were tourism and fisheries, two industries that are key to New Zealand's economy. The cost of a major spill in New Zealand to our coastlines, wildlife and economy, could be massive.

"The other activists and I hope that our actions will inspire others to put a stop to what Shell, Anadarko and Petrobras plan to do in New Zealand waters.

"Like those in the Arctic, it is now time for people here to defend our precious coastlines from high-risk extreme oil drilling.

"The Deepwater Horizon was an exploratory well, just like the ones that Anadarko plan to drill this summer. Once Anadarko starts work, we'll be running the risk of a Gulf of Mexico-type disaster in our waters.

"If we allow the oil industry to do their bidding in these far flung reaches of the world, then we stand to see these places ruined by oil spills," Lawless says.

"New Zealand is about to lose its chance to compete in the global clean energy revolution, as Pure Advantage highlighted in its report on Monday. If we act now, we'll be helping the world escape runaway climate change, and we'll be able to enjoy true prosperity," she says.

Lawless Likely To Face Less Severe Charge - Taranaki Daily News 12 June 2012

Taranaki Daily News 12 June 2012 is reporting that Lucy's court case may have finally seen an end to all the adjournments.

Image634750781090166015Greenpeace activist Lucy Lawless is expected to have burglary charges dropped in court this week in return for pleading guilty to a lesser charge.

Lawless and her group attracted international attention during their four-day protest against Arctic drilling from their perch at the top of 53-metre drilling derrick on the Noble Discoverer in February.

At the time the ship was moored at Port Taranaki while being provisioned for a voyage to Alaska.

After months of plea-bargain wrangling between Greenpeace’s high-profile Auckland criminal lawyer Ron Mansfield and bosses, the Taranaki Daily News understands prosecutors will this week ask for the burglary charge to be withdrawn and replaced with one of unlawfully boarding a ship.

Police initially charged the eight with burglary after taking advice from Crown prosecutors.

The more serious charge drew criticism from Greenpeace and raised concerns that a burglary conviction could hinder Lawless’ acting career by limiting entry into some countries such as the United States.

Previous actions by Greenpeace activists at Port Taranaki and offshore have attracted lesser charges including trespass.

The eight, who were to appear in New Plymouth District Court tomorrow, are now expected to appear in Auckland District Court later this week where they will plead guilty to the charge.

They return to New Plymouth District Court in September to be sentenced.

Mr Mansfield was in court yesterday and unavailable while Greenpeace declined to speak before the case was dealt with in court.

Search and Rescue Sergeant Andrew Ross said last night he was one of three Taranaki SAR members who climbed the derrick to bring the group down. There was no opposition from them, he said.

Lucy Lawless - Squatter Digs In

Jason is at it again and this time he wants a sea view ...what will he do to get that coveted sea view? This video is just hysterical.

Apparently I'm not good enough to stay in the family home, so Lucy thinks it's somehow appropriate for me to stay in the....shed? Sorry Lucy - you can call it a garden house but it's still a shed. No pool, no grand piano, not even a sea view. We'll see about that....

New AUSXIP Lucy Lawless Site Updates, Sliders and Banners

It's that time of the year again when AUSXIP Lucy Lawless begins to change banners, tweaking older pages, adding new sections. This year we have a new feature (which you may have noticed) and that is the image slider. AUSXIP Contributing Editor Aiglon and I have been working on making this relevant to Lucy's most current projects. This makes it much easier (and prettier) way to find the most current Lucy projects.

In addition to that AUSXIP Lucy Lawless which used to be www.lucylawless.info is now www.lucylawless.net and that transition is now complete.

Over the coming weeks, more changes will be made to the site: some you will see and some you won't as they will happen to refresh old pages or bring them up to the current design.

    Image634749438482314453

    The Changes so far:

Main Page -  New Current Project Slider plus new banner
Music subsite - New Slider plus new banner
Eco-Warrior subsite - new slider plus new banner

Many thanks to Aiglon for all her help with the art; it's given the site new oomph!

Just an update to the yesterday's press release of Lucy appearing in the theatre show The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs in Auckland.

This morning I checked the official ticket site and found that they had not listed Lucy in the cast list. A few minutes ago Michael Hurst's official twitter announced the Lucy has to pull out of the show. See below for the tweet. What a shame.

Heavy Sea Ice Throws Significant Delay Into Shell's Arctic Drilling Plans

Check out the latest in the #savethearctic campaign...Mother Nature has joined in the protest as well! Shell is going to be delayed by 2-3 weeks which precious time for them.

Heavy Sea Ice Throws Significant Delay Into Shell's Drilling Plans
    by KTUU.com 4 June 2012

    ANCHORAGE, Alaska—

Heavy sea ice will significantly delay Shell Oil’s planned offshore drilling operations this summer in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas.

Shell is saying that sea ice coverage in the Bering Sea is 30 to 40 percent above normal, the worst it’s been in 12 years. Ice coverage is also above normal in both the Beaufort and Chukchi seas.

That means that the first Arctic Ocean drilling off America's shores in a generation will be delayed by two to three weeks -- a major setback since the summer drilling season in Arctic waters is so short.

Shell had hoped to be drilling in the Beaufort and Chukchi by early July, but the sea ice coverage means the best it can hope for is to drill in mid-to-late July, or even early August.

The delay could mean that Shell might only complete as few as two of its five planned exploratory wells. Nevertheless, it now looks inevitable that at least some drilling will be done in Alaska's Arctic waters this summer.

Virtually all environmental challenges to the drilling plan have been pushed aside by the courts, but there will still be environmental protests.

The most dramatic of those protests may be staged by Greenpeace, which is under a restraining order barring it from interfering with Shell personnel or assets. A federal judge granted the order after several protesters, including actress Lucy Lawless , boarded the drillship Noble Discoverer in a New Zealand harbor to delay its departure for Alaska.

Greenpeace has vowed not to attempt any illegal boardings during the Shell drilling operations in the Arctic.

Instead the company will deploy a manned submarine, to document sea life in the drilling area.

It will also deploy Zodiacs in the water -- with underwater microphones -- to examine whether noises from the drill platforms have adverse impacts on whales.

Shell says it's spent tens of millions of dollars on accoustical studies, and has determined its drill-rig noises have "minimal" effect on marine life.

End of Spartacus TV Series Leaves A Gap for Kiwi actors NZ Herald 6 June 2012

    screenshot_23

    The NZ Herald - 6 June 2012

End of Spartacus TV series leaves a gap for Kiwi actors

The end of the New Zealand-filmed TV show Spartacus is being called a ‘‘major blow’’ to Kiwi actors, but industry insiders are hopeful similar projects will soon replace it.

Creator and executive producer Steven DeKnight told the Hollywood Reporter the hit swords-and-sandals epic would end on a high note after three full series and a prequel season.

‘‘That was part of the decision to wrap up the show — the idea of ending it when you’re on top and the audience still wants more instead of dragging it out.’’

New Zealand actors who starred in the high-rating show include Lucy Lawless, Anna Hutchison from Go Girls and Craig Parker from Shortland Street and The Lord of the Rings.

Anna Majavu of New Zealand Actors Equity said the series had brought numerous benefits.

‘‘Screen acting work on major series is the only form of stable income for professional actors and the end of Spartacus will be a major blow to New Zealand’s professional actors who have been cast in increasing numbers in core-cast roles.’’

New Zealand film crews, extras, stunt people and equipment hire companies would also be affected.

Ms Majavu said appearing i n Spartacus, which airs in 150 countries in more than 15 languages, was a great opportunity for Kiwi actors.

‘‘It can catapult them into a big acting career overseas.’’

New Zealand actor Gareth Williams, who plays the villainous Vettius, said the opportunity to work on a large-scale production such as Spartacus was a ‘‘helpful stepping stone’’.

‘‘It does create opportunities because you can say that you’ve been in an American TV series.’’

Agent Graham Dunster, who represents Lucy Lawless and other actors in the show, said the producers had been very happy with the results they got in New Zealand and he was confident other projects would be brought here soon.

Filming for the final series of Spartacus will finish at the end of the year.

Lucy to Appear in The Agony and The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs On Stage in NZ

The following is a press release on Voxy.co.nz of an upcoming one off stage production of The Agony & The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs:

    PRESS RELEASE:
A one night journey into Apple's core

One of the most controversial pieces of modern theatre becomes one of Silo's fundraising one-offs, when The Agony and The Ecstasy of Steve Jobs polarizes audiences on June 24th at the Maidment Theatre.

Mike Daisey pulls back the curtain veiling America's most mysterious technology icon. With a wickedly funny tale of pride, beauty, lust, and industrial design, Daisey illuminates the war-from China to Silicon Valley-over how we see our world, and the human price we pay for our high-tech toys.

As part of fundraising efforts for the 2012 season, the play's selection by the company stems from the resonance it shares with many other works that have been produced as part of Silo's repertoire. It stands as a piece of art in its own right (despite the controversy), while unearthing contemporary truths in modern society.

One crewmember, Fernando Pereira, drowned after the ship was bombed. and to the arrest of the French intelligence agents who were charged with manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years. They served only 2.  In 1992 Lucy played the role of Jane Redmond, Rainbow Warrior Crew member in the movie The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior.  Jane Redmond was the fictional character but the role was based on Bunny McDiarmid, a crewmember of the Rainbow Warrior. Bunny is now still in Greenpeace but is the Executive Director of Greenpeace New Zealand.

Alrighty I'm going to break my own rule of not posting pics of myself. You really can't see me but you can (it makes sense if you see the image). Taylor sent me this pic of her looking back at the crowd at the Kings Arms and there perched up on the ledge is me, Jo behind me and the tripod camera.
Just to give you an idea of what the ausxip setup looked like.

This will be the ONLY time I ever post a pic of me on AUSXIP. Now for the record Jo is not standing on anything other than her boots <g> I had to get a step ladder to get up on the ledge so there you go. As you can see Taylor is at the front and the shot of the packed out crowd.
